Verdict on The Devil’s Hour – Episode 2

Episode Two gives us a chance to dive into the big two cliffhangers left after Episode One. While most of the detective side of the story is following small clues. It is everything on Lucy’s side that becomes most interesting. Seeing her difficult relationship with her son starting to take over her life. She has been doing everything she can to understand why he is different. Add in the strange interactions he has and his emotionless delivery it leaves us wondering what is going on.

This becomes the most interesting side of the whole story. Having the question, why is he like this and what is with the strange interactions? The haunting delivery of believing he sees someone in the house despite his mother seeing nothing. Completing this episode off comes the conversation between Gideon and Lucy. The question is, what is going on between them?

This show has given us two strong episodes that have left us with massive cliffhangers that want us to come back for more.

Wreck – Episode 6 – Water Off a Duck’s Back – Recap

Water Off a Duck's Back

Director: Chris Baugh

Writer: Ryan J Brown (Screenplay)

Cast

  • Oscar Kennedy
  • Thaddea Graham
  • Alice Nokes
  • Jodie Tyack
  • Georgia Goodman

Plot: Jamie finds himself in a lethal dead end with seemingly no way out. But after a surprise intervention brings some momentary respite, he learns that others are in peril, and it will be a race against the clock to save them. Jamie tells the shocked crew about the true horrors happening on board and desperately tries to enlist them in his battle against the powers that be. Having come such a long way since the start of his journey, Jamie must find the inner courage to become the leader he knows deep down he is. He came on board with a mission and he’s determined to see it through to the end.

Runtime: 47 Minutes

There will be spoilers in the rest of the recap

Story: Water Off a Duck’s Back starts as Jamie knows the truth and that Vivian is going to be the next victim, handpicked by Lily. Meanwhile, returning to Pippa’s time on board, she had the proof and was looking to escape, having a contact who was helping her.

As the Captain reveals everything that goes on to Jamie, is still questioning what happened to Pippa. Learning that the ship has been doing this for over a century. Explaining how Sam had been clearing up messes in the past, including Danny.

As the Captain kills Sam, it shows the pain on Karen’s face for losing one of her men. The rest of the officers are ordered to learn who else knows about the secrets, only for Cormac and Rosie to save them.

Jamie looks to rally together the rest of the crew to fight back against the officers and end the twisted games being played on board. This leads to the ship losing complete control, with Karen wanting to call everything off. As the battle rages on in corridors, Jamie looks to save Vivian from the last game on board.

Verdict on Water Off a Duck’s Back

Water Off a Duck’s Back is an excellent ending to the series. It brings everything previously brought together with the connections made along the way for the final battle. Even if the show never hinted at this direction in the early episodes. It keeps us truly engaged in the final two episodes.

The battles between the crew and officers are set up like a true rebellion while being completely involved in the passenger game adds all the intensity we lacked in previous episodes. Having a hint that something bigger than everyone on board is here still, even if the bigger gore factor is held back on.

This ends up becoming ‘Hostel on a Boat’. Which works out to be very clever, despite the slow pace reaching here. We could easily return to another ship with many members of this crew leading the fight.

Where to Watch: Wreck is available on BBC iPlayer Now.

Final Thoughts Water Off a Duck’s Back has a brilliant conclusion that completes the chaos perfectly.

Wreck – Episode 5 – Needle in a Gaystack – Recap

Needle in a Gaystack

Director: Chris Baugh

Writer: Ryan J Brown (Screenplay)

Cast

  • Oscar Kennedy
  • Thaddea Graham
  • Alice Nokes
  • Jodie Tyack
  • Georgia Goodman

Plot: Whilst Vivian and Lily’s relationship reaches new heights, Jamie finds himself in a terrifying situation and must use all his courage and strength to escape. Once reunited, Jamie tells Vivian and the rest of his gang what he’s discovered. Together, they form a plan to collect evidence and tell the world what they’ve uncovered. With each of Jamie’s trusted inner circles given a task, the group split up, allowing Jamie and Olly to finally have a moment together. But as our gang go about their business, Jamie uncovers that the truth of what happened to Pippa is just the tip of the iceberg. The Sacramentum is home to a chilling secret bigger than any of them imagined.

Runtime: 42 Minutes

There will be spoilers in the rest of the recap

Story: Needle in a Gaystack starts in the aftermath of the officer’s attack on Jamie. Returning to Pippa’s dates with Sam, as she is waiting to leave, showing the relationship the pair once had. The most important part is Pippa seeing what the Officers get up to on board.

Jamie discovers another dead body, as Sam needs to prove himself to the other officers after his mistake. This leads to Jamie escaping, as the rest of the crew searches for Vivian. As the group regroup, Jamie, Vivian, Ollie, Cormac, Rosie and Lily must search for proof. Karen the head officer puts everyone on searching duties, leaving the six with little hope but to hide out until they find escape or answers.

What the group discover is much bigger than they ever imagined, going deeper into the ship. Leading to Jamie and Ollie discovering the secret base and learning what is going on with the company. The guests are involved in a twisted game on board, using the lowest-paid employees on the ship.

Verdict on Needle in a Gaystack

Needle in a Gaystack brings the show back in the very best direction. Taking everything in a more focused direction, showing the two sides of what has been happening on the ship. We have a clear divide in place, which has helped put everything back in a direction that is filled with suspense. With us learning everything at the same time Jamie does.

The reveal of what has really been going on is fantastic, even if it still isn’t going down the same path as the slasher concept suggested. We are now left with one episode to see if Jamie can escape now he knows the truth or will the crew need to deal with him too. The big question about everything remains though, Why was Danny picked off?

Where to Watch: Wreck is available on BBC iPlayer Now.

Final Thoughts Needle in a Gaystack is the best episode since the first, more focused and delivers the twist we needed.
