Verdict on The Madame Blanc Mysteries Season 2
Episode 1 (D. Dermot Boyd)
This starts when Inspector Caron’s (Gaumond) wife is murdered, and he turns to Jean (Lindsay) for help. His past with the lead inspector leads him to become the prime suspect and only believes Jean can save him. Elsewhere, the rest of the village is coming together for a Christmas celebration, as Dom (Edge) welcomes the family.
This is a nice welcome back to the characters, Jean needing to go further to help Caron is a big addition to their crime-solving partnership. Meanwhile, seeing the villagers getting into trouble preparing for Christmas shows the community closer than ever. However, writing out Dom’s daughter and Gloria’s son does take away a little party of community. As for the mystery, seeing the case unfold is entertaining too. (4/5)
Episode 2 (D. Dermot Boyd)
This starts when local resident Jeremy (Askwith) finds a dead body after a night of drinking on his boat. It causes tension with his partner and as they are hosting a celebrity chef makes that difficult for them. Jean comes in to help with the case, as the residents prepare for the return of one of their own from jail. Meanwhile, Dom takes this case more personally than any of them before.
This keeps us close to the villagers with the latest crime. It shows how together they are when a crime gets committed and how they stick together. While the case doesn’t have as big of a mystery behind it, it seems to take on the simple side of the murder mystery. There is a bigger message about fallen stars trying to recapture their spark. (3/5)
Episode 3 (D. Dermot Boyd)
This starts when a member of the theatre dies leaving Judith and Jeremy facing closure and redevelopment. However, a familiar face returns to town for the funeral, causing tension because of her previous actions. It gives plenty of drama for the villages, as the mystery takes Jean to learn more about people outside of the area.
This episode focuses more on the bigger drama in the village surrounding a theatre. While also offering up a bigger mystery from the past. It spends a lot of time on the case while dealing with bigger returns to the village. Gloria and Dom must decide on how they want to treat a returning guest. (3/5)
Episode 4 (D. Dermot Boyd)
This starts with Judith and Jeremy’s latest investment has a grisly discovery. Caron leads the investigation of the dead body and Jean is called in to help with an artefact the deceased was holding. Meanwhile, Gloria gets wooed by a new member of the village, while Dom is forced to speed up the process.
This episode shows the continuing decline in the bigger mysteries going on. We are now 4 episodes in, and we still haven’t picked up any more clues to the cliffhanger left behind. However, the side stories continue to entertain and bring laughs along the way. (3/5)
Episode 5 (D. Dermot Boyd)
This starts when Jean’s friends David (Les Dennis) and George (David Ames) visit for their honeymoon. They find themselves receiving a strange gift which could be connected to a curse. Elsewhere, Babara (Caffrey) returns as she looks to get back at Jean, using her familiar connection.
This is an interesting episode which does get to explore other members of Jean’s life. There is more of a wacky case going on, as the villagers must solve their own problems. It is nice to give us an early tease of the returning Barbara for the bigger story. Even if the case doesn’t have as big of a mystery. (3/5)
Episode 6 (D. Dermot Boyd)
This starts when a local musician is killed when nobody else is in the room. It leads to Jean getting called to help try and solve the mystery, which once again circles Judith and Jeremy’s lives. This takes Jean and Caron on the latest case, with plenty of twists and turns along the way. Elsewhere, Gloria gets a visit from her father to meet her new fella.
This brings another mystery around the funny adventures of Judith and Jeremy. The mystery has the typical twists and turns along the way, without being too complicated. However, it is the small bigger storyline starting to take over which keeps us wanting more. (3/5)
Episode 7 (D. Dermot Boyd)
This starts when a local businessman is found murdered in his shop. Elsewhere, Barbara continues her plan to get back at Jean and take back what she believes is hers. Meanwhile, Judith and Jeremy continue to be involved in the latest case without having anything to do with it. However, Gloria’s new boyfriend Cooper becomes one of the prime suspects in the murder.
This is a nice final mystery to see unfold, which sees another close friend in danger. However, the biggest mystery is what Barbara wants to do to Jean as her plan is getting closer to unfolding. (3/5)
Overall
This series continues Jean’s adventures in the small French village. While she still gets close to Dom and helps solve the crimes. The mysteries are fun to see unfold and continue to include antique-related reasons to solve them. However, the series shifts away from using the bar as the main location. It means a couple of season-one regulars have been dropped from this season. We still have a nice interesting series of mysteries but it does feel like a bit of a step down from season one.
Where to Watch
The Madame Blanc Mysteries Season 2 is coming to DVD on 26 February.
Final Thoughts – The Madame Blanc Mysteries Season 2 continues to be an enjoyable cosy series of mysteries.
