Mike (Rea), Kristin (Sutherland), Daniel (Rawiri) and Gina (Ionda) begin their investigation. This is a welcome return for the show, the mystery keeps us guessing and the chemistry between the team is fantastic. We are back in the town and ready to see where the mysteries will take us next. It is always nice to see a return of a series being a great episode because it pulls us in for even more adventures. (4/5)

Sudden Death Round

Sudden Death Round follows the unexpected death of popular radio host returning to host a school event. The guests become the suspects, and the team must dive into the lives of the guests. However, the bigger secrets begin taking over and memories from the school haunt the victim and the guests.

This brings high school dramas to life in the later years as the suspect has a connection to many of the suspects. We are kept guessing well and meet plenty of dramas in everyday lives. It continues to show the team working together perfectly to solve the crime and leaves us waiting for the next incident. (4/5)

All Hallows Eve

All Hallows Eve follows the locals attending local seance with outsiders. However, the session leads to a man getting fatally stabbed. The team must question everyone in the home at the time to figure out who was behind the murder. However, the medium only makes things more complicated.

This episode dives into the mystery of a murder in a locked room, with a host of suspects. It offers plenty of mystery and includes a couple of the locals. This has the guests having connection to the victim, which gives plenty of them motive too. Another great mystery in the series, which keeps us wanting to solve more crimes with the crew. (4/5)

The End of the Line

The End of the Line follows a previous suspect being discovered dead on a zip line. Mike and the team begin their investigation into the getaway with the teachers and students. However, the familiar faces begin to fill out the suspect list.

This is an interesting episode because it brings back some of the previous suspects and returns to some of the side stories. It creates a great mystery about who was behind it all and show certain series of consequences around the previous incidents. One of the more unique episodes and great at leaving thing prepared for more. (4/5)

An Oades to Christmas

An Oades to Christmas follows the team investigating the death of a Santa. The true identity connects him to a local family the team have investigated before, with one member recently getting released from jail. While the investigation leads down a family drama, it adds earlier feelings towards criminals in the area.

The final episode takes the team down memory lane dealing with a family involved in an earlier crime. On the negative side, if you haven’t seen the earlier series, you won’t get all the connections. Elsewhere, the case has plenty of suspects and a closer to home story hits harder. (4/5)

Overall

The Brokenwood Mysteries Series 11 has been a welcome return for the detective team. We have had fresh mysteries, which have kept us guessing, a blend of humour and more series moments. Elsewhere, the cast has been great and the supporting regulars too. The show is in series 11 and it feels fresh, entertaining and keeps everything with us wanting more.

Final ThoughtsThe Brokenwood Mysteries Series 11 is a delightful series of crimes, with excellent chemistry.

Whitstable Pearl Series 3 offers captivating mysteries and character dynamics, showcasing Pearl's investigations while deepening community ties amidst personal challenges.

First Reaction – Whitstable Pearl Series 3 is a great series of mysteries with enjoyable characters.

Whitstable Pearl Series 1 – 3 Box Set on 4 August 2025, courtesy of Acorn Media International

Director: David Sant, Steve Brett

Writer: Sarah-Louise Hawkins, Ciara Conway, Mike Walden, Joe Ainsworth, Kit Lambert (Screenplay)

Writer: Oystein Karlsen, Julie Wassmer (Creators)

Cast

Plot: Local restaurant owner Pearl Nolan sets up a local detective agency after undergoing police training in an earlier career. She is soon embroiled in her first case when she discovers the body of her close friend Vinnie.

Runtime: 45 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Girl, Whitstable Beach

The series returns when one of the locals gets attacked on the beach. She turns to Pearl (Godliman) to investigate the case, as she believes she saw a local mum who vanished years before. Pearl begins investigating the disappearance and dives into the reason she disappeared in the first place.

This returning episode gives us a big mystery that has much deeper roots. It shows a much deadlier plan with plenty of twists and turns along the way. Elsewhere, we have the returning Mike with a change in attitude. The fun side of the story is keeping feeling like we are part of the community. (4/5)

Death, The Devil and the Fool

We start when a young girl goes missing and Pearl leads the investigation. The evidence shows the girl getting in a van, but a psychic community is getting involved in the case turning it into a circus.

This is another great case with unexpected series of twists and turns. It keeps us guessing and shows how a small town can turn into amateur detectives to solve a local mystery. This shows how Pearl’s approach is causing problems, as she keeps getting caught in the middle of something with her friendlier approach. (4/5)

Oysters Kilpatrick

The episode begins with Tom (Webb) preparing to take Pearl on a romantic getaway. However, his plans for a proposal become complicate after speaking to her closest and a food critic dies in her restaurant. The crime is up close and personal, forcing the members of the restaurant staff to work together to help with the case before the business is ruined.

This brings an up close and personal story to life for Pearl. Mike is torn between following protocol and helping his friend’s business. It makes the story feel more intense as it has the potential to ruin everything Pearl has worked for. However, the case becomes much more interesting when everything begins to unfold. (4/5)

Prisoners of the Past

When Pearl discovers her son is back in England, she decides to go in search of him, leaving Dolly (Barber) to look after the restaurant. However, an unwanted guest from the past arrives creating a tension between the locals. Mike is torn between keeping Dolly out of trouble and investigating the former crime that could have bigger secrets behind it.

This one of the most interesting episodes in the series. First, we get Pearl away from the town dealing with a personal matter. However, it is the case Mike investigates which has torn the town apart. It shows how the town can have its history ruined by one incident which was never conducting properly and saw an innocent man serve time. (5/5)

Walking with Ghosts

This episode begins on Halloween night when a local believes they see someone burying a body on the beach. However, it seems like something doesn’t add up, testing Mike and Nikki’s patience. Elsewhere, Charlie (Nedd) tries to settle back into the area and catch up with Ruby (Molloy). Pearl ends up investigating the case, hoping to learn more.

This enters the more fun episode of the series, it plays into a traditional holiday in Halloween. It creates a mystery connected to the local legend and the returning Charlie is fantastic to see return. This lightens the mood from the previous episode while building more of the community feeling in the town. (4/5)

Someone Like Me

This episode follows Pearl investigating the murder of a local cabbie. Elsewhere, Mike conducts his own investigation clashing with how Pearl handles herself. However, the bigger questions around the case come to life with a surprising series of events.

This case feels accelerated throughout this episode despite it having a series of interesting case. It finally addresses some of the bigger issues Mike is battling through and leaves us wanting to see the pair return for more crimes. (4/5)

Overall

When it comes to the mysteries in the series, we get some interesting ones, and ones that take on different subject matters. Everything single one feels great and moves Pearl’s journey along. The return of Charlie is great too. However, the Pearl and Mike friendship feels very empty this time around and leaves us wanting to see more from them.

Final ThoughtsWhitstable Pearl Series 3 is a great series with fascinating cases.

Runtime: 45 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Episode 1

We return with former detective Jack Darby (Brown) and widowed nurse Joan Kirkhope (Scacchi) return on to their travels. Jack is still trying to prove his innocence in the death on the job and goes in search for the only person who can clear his name. However, on route, the pair stumble into a new mystery surrounding two brothers.

This returns with the bigger story having a few more hints to where things will go. It shows Jack needing to discover the truth before it is too late. However, the mystery the pair find themselves in feels a little lacklustre. The main focus storyline is the best part of the returning episode and keeps us wanting to return to the next episode. (3/5)

Episode 2

Jack and Joan go in search of a missing person who can clear his name. However, a rival cop has followed him. On their journey they discover a woman involved in car crash and investigate the accident. However, they discover a reputation she has and must understand who might have attack her. It takes them through the hospital staff and locals who spread a rumour about the victim.

This gives a new mystery which has plenty of suspects and keeps things about incidents, rather than a murder. It keeps us guessing and most importantly we keep the bigger story about Jack and his past. (4/5)

Episode 3

Joan arranges to meet up with her estranged sister Maxine. The pair travel to a luxury island for a getaway but things take a drastic turn. Elsewhere, Lizzy (Anderson) continues investigate the case against her father, as she notices a bigger cover up in play. Meanwhile, when one of the hosts is kidnaped, Jack and Joan investigate the case and make a discover about the other guests.

This gives us another fun mystery to solve and the building romantic tension between the two continues to grow. It shows more personal growth for Joan as each episode continues to offer this. As well as the bigger story around Jack’s case. It is coming together nicely with light-hearted mystery, that continue to step away from murder mystery. (4/5)

Episode 4

In the aftermath of the shocking events in the last episode, Jack and Joan face a difficult decision on where to go next. The pair visit a local vineyard for an event. However, an unexpected fire breaks out in the vines leading the pair to investigate what caused it. Jack begins investigating the bigger case, as the vines crime creates a bigger mystery.

We continue the bigger mystery about Jack’s former case. It has opened to a new direction which keeps us wanting to know how this will unfold. Meanwhile, the episode case is interesting and has a few twists and turns to make things click together nicely. Even if it isn’t the biggest one in the series. (3/5)

Episode 5

Joan receives an unexpected call from Maxine who reveals she has got engaged. However, her new fiancée is unknown to most and he collapses. Joan and Jack investigate what could have caused it and discover Maxine’s new life is more complicated.

This slows down the bigger story and puts more focus on Joan’s journey. We only get a small glimpse into Jack’s bigger case. However, the mystery has plenty of twists and turns along the way to keep us full invested. (3/5)

Episode 6

This episode begins with the location of the person who can clear Jack’s name. However, she reveals the bigger truth about how she survived and avoided capture. Only for the case to begin hitting closer to home, but the new clue could finally clear Jack’s name.

This brings the biggest case full circle as the clues could finally solve the bigger mystery. It intensifies the suspect pool, as Jack is more known to the potential killer or killers. This is a great conclusion to the series, which has kept us wanting more through every episode. (4/5)

Overall

The series maintains the quirky friendship between Jack and Joan as they travel around Australia. It does something different than most mysteries shows, where we rarely touch a murder case outside of the biggest one around Jack’s case. This keeps it refreshing for a mystery show. The chemistry between Bryan Brown and Greta Scacchi is excellent and it keeps us wanting to return for more.

Final ThoughtsDarby and Joan Series 2 is a delightful road trip mysteries series.

Everybody Loves Chloe

This episode begins when celebrity Chloe (Kirby) is found dead in her apartment. DI Max Arnold (Scarborough), DS Layla Walsh (Emme) lead the case, which explores the private life of the celebrity. Meanwhile, DC Connor Pollock (Bankole) and DC Jess Lombard (Phelps) complete the team. When they get deeper into the case, they discover plenty of secrets leading to a host of suspects behind the crime.

We start the series strong with a big case that explores the problems with a celebrity’s life. It keeps us guessing and gives us a glimpse into the bigger life problems. This makes for a great return for the team, showing the unity they have. The case is interesting and the suspects a plenty, which benefits from the extended runtime the series has. (4/5)

Deadlock

The episode follows two dead bodies discovered in an exclusive allotment. Max and Layla lead the investigation, which sees them investigating the American Embassy. However, the clues begin to make things more complicated, as diplomatic positions make things difficult.

This episode continues to explore the complex case in the Chelsea area. It dives into an older crime with skeletal remains being the victims. This has a feeling of ‘Bones’ and even builds a bigger conspiracy occurring. It is a great episode and easily one of the best. (5/5)

Myths and Legends

The episode begins when an antiques dealer is murdered in his shop. It takes Max and Layla into the world of antiques and different people connected to the victim. The investigation has plenty of twists and turns with the corruption of the bigger antique world.

This does slow the series down after the heater 2nd episode. However, it does give us a nice mystery to solve with plenty of twists and turns. Meanwhile, the personal lives of the detectives are interesting to explore more. (3/5)

For The Greater Good

The episode follows Max and Layla investigating a dead body in the boot of a stolen car. The victim is a climate change activist, and the team must investigate his campaigns. However, not everything is as easy as it seems, and the two different stories offer plenty to investigate. Meanwhile, a much closer-to-home incident involves the team.

We complete the series if a complex case is filled with secrets. Some parts hit closer to home, and it brings the team closer. It leaves the team facing home truths and wanting to help each other out. This pulls us in and keeps us wanting to see how it unfolds. (4/5)

Overall

The series shines by having longer episodes, giving us time to see into the smaller parts of the lives of the team. Each case gives a unique series of twists and turns. This is one of the best detective shows around, with interesting characters, complex cases and a down-to-earth feeling. We can’t wait to see what the next series has up its sleeves.

Final ThoughtsThe Chelsea Detective – Series 3 is becoming one of the most must-watch detective shows.

Christmas Special

The episode begins when Jean (Lindsay) is called to help with Caron’s (Gaumond) latest investigation. A puppeteer has been left for dead after an item was planted in his puppet. Elsewhere, Jeremy (Askwith) and Judith (Holderness) discover their marriage was held by a criminal disguised as a priest. Jean and Caron must work together to uncover the murderer, leaving them learning the bigger secrets the family holds.

It is a nice Christmas special, and our core characters have a moving story. Jean and Dom are celebrating Christmas together, and the rest of the locals are coming together in Jeremy and Judith’s time of need. Elsewhere, the mystery is interesting without being as intense as many other crimes. (3/5)

Beach Club

This episode begins when Jeremy and Judith discover an unconscious man in a boat floating in the ocean. Caron asks Jean for help with the case. Elsewhere, Uncle Patrick (Robinson) battles increasing prices and looks into understanding why. Meanwhile, the crime takes an unexpected twist when Jean investigate more of what happened to the victim.

This offers an interesting case for the pair to solve and as always, the side story has a few laughs. It keeps things connected to a bigger series of events and shows the locals coming together to solve smaller problems. This is a comfortable addition to the series and a calm return to the main series. (3/5)

Inheritance

This episode follows an incident at the antique family where the cleaner is found dead. Elsewhere, Jeremy and Judith look to help an injured person at the restaurant and look after Gloria’s dog. Meanwhile, Jean is called to help investigate the incident, and it points toward murder.

Antique Antics

This episode follows an antiques television show coming to the village. Jean, Dom, Jeremy and Judith help with production, but one of the experts is poisoned. Caron must investigate the murder and clashes with Jean over trying to uncover the truth.

This is the best episode of the series so far. The cut-throat glimpse into antique shows comes to life. Elsewhere, Jean and Caron clash is great, as they have always gotten on without any problems. Meanwhile, Dom gets jealous of Jean’s friends in the showbiz, too. While the mystery isn’t as intense as others, the connection and character development are most interesting. (4/5)

Where Eagles Dare

This episode begins to show the strain Jean and Dom have after the last episode. A new case means they must work together as Jean and Caron investigate an attack on a man hoping to sell a jewelled eagle trinket. Elsewhere, Patrick has his licence revoked, and the residents come together to resolve the issue.

This has the biggest case of the series, with the most recognisable antique. It shows the residents doing everything to come together for the greater good. Meanwhile, Dom and Jean’s relationship is tested, and they face the biggest problems they have faced before. It is a nice conclusion to this series of the show. (4/5)

Overall

The Madame Blanc Mysteries – Series 4 is an enjoyable continuation of the case for the residents. It keeps a comfy feeling throughout the series while building the characters. Jean and Dom have highs and lows. Elsewhere, the side story keeps the series feeling lighter in places.

Final ThoughtsThe Madame Blanc Mysteries – Series 4 is an enjoyable return for the series.

Director: Jozua Malherbe, Karen Jeynes

Writer: Karen Jeynes, Anathia Rubela, Chase Rhys, Beer Adriaanse (Screenplay)

Cast

Plot: Tannie Maria sees food as “medicine for the body and heart”. She envies romance as much as she enjoys cooking and eating. But it’s death that shakes up Tannie Maria’s life, when one of the correspondents to her column is brutally murdered.

Runtime: 50 Minutes per episode

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Once Upon a Time

We begin the series with Tannie facing her distant relatives wanting answers about her husband’s death. She continues her work at the local newspaper as the locals continue to deal with their problems in her correspondence. Elsewhere, Hattie decides to run for mayor and Jessie continues to find cutting-edge stories.

This is a nice return for the series, and opens up the bigger story behind Tannie’s past. We see what everyone is up to next and blend in a nice series of cookery. However, it doesn’t get into any new mysteries until later on and doesn’t make a big returning impact like most shows would do to grab our attention for upcoming series. (3/5)

A Little Guilt Goes A Long Way

This begins in the aftermath of the fire and the death of a local. Outsiders are called in to investigate the fire and discover how it started and spread so quickly. Meanwhile, Khaya leads the case into the death and Maria continues to deal with her personal problems from her past.

The show is struggling to get going this season so far. Jessie does have a new role which will boost her career. Maria and her past feels like it is going to drag along. Meanwhile, the case begins, which is going to last for a while and is the thing that has become the most interesting in the series. Hopefully, things will get going and the show will get into gear soon. (2/5)

The Heart Wants What the Heart Wants

We continue the tension between Maria and Alieen, as Khaya begins an early investigation. Elsewhere, Jessie is enjoying taking her new role as acting editor of the paper. Meanwhile, Hattie finds her competition for mayor getting more intense before the debate.

This continues to build the bigger series of stories in the town, while giving small clues behind the fire. There isn’t too much happening though, and we are easily in the filler part of the story coming out. It can be a bit frustrating that not more is happening leaving us wanting more from the series. (2/5)

His Favourite Snoek

This jumps into the aftermath of the robbery attempt on Maria. She is left in the middle of a difficult decision about how to reveal the news to Khaya. Jessie revelation leads to a shocking new suspect in the arson attempt. Maria begins getting questioned about her husband’s death, as the team decide whether to investigate more. Elsewhere, Maria and Jessie find love interesting rivals clashing.

We continue to struggle to get into the bigger case. The romantic angles for Maria and Jessie are not the most interesting. This series is struggling to get going, and getting invested in the story has become harder. It needs a much-needed boost to get the story moving. (2/5)

Crash Bang Wallop

Maria faces the reality that her home is going to be taken away from her, as her past continues to haunt her. A new murder presents a new series of questions. Maria, Jessie and Hattie work together to investigate the case. Meanwhile, Khaya leads the investigation, which has plenty of potential suspects.

This gives the series a much-needed boost, with a new mystery and a larger suspect pool. It keeps the personal lives evolving and Maria begins her plan to keep her home. This is the sort of episode we would have liked a little earlier because it lays more of the groundwork for the bigger story going on. (3/5)

Home is Where the Bearnaise is

We start with Maria deciding to investigate the murder victim, leading to her breaking into his office. Meanwhile, Alieen begins questioning her partner’s choice. Jessie deals with her problems and makes a decision. Finally, Maria faces an uncertain future in the place she made her home.

The pieces begin to come together in the murder case. Meanwhile, the interwoven personal lives begin to clash. The case is interesting to see present difficult suspects. However, the personal lives connecting so much is making it feel like we are stepping into a soap opera. Sadly, the show is caught between an interesting murder mystery and an overly dramatic soap opera. (2/5)

Come Home to Roost

We begin with Alieen writing to Tannie to confess the guilt she feels and the pain her husband left her in. Elsewhere, the mayoral race faces the big voting day, and Hattie questions whether she can pull off the upset. However, it leads to Jessie facing an uncertain future, returning to her former role. Finally, the case begins to come to a conclusion and the suspects must be tracked down.

We jump to the final chapters of the stories coming together giving everyone hope. Maria, Jessie and Hattie realize how much they enjoy working together. Meanwhile, families reunite, but the threat is still out there, waiting to get captured. It leaves us nicely prepared for the final episode of the series. (4/5)

Always Look After your Pots

The final episode follows the suspect getting tracked down. It follows the rest of the residents coming together to move on with their lives and Maria plans one of her best dishes. Everyone finds a way to move on after the events, no matter what has changed for them.

It feels like a comfortable closing episode, and it brings the community together. However, it lacks the sparks the series could have had and has a few other things up the sleeve for future events. (3/5)

Overall

Recipes for Love and Murder Series 2 has struggled to get going for the most part. The murder case has plenty of mystery about it, but it doesn’t seem to have enough of a suspect pool. Maria’s storyline trying to keep her home, shows the pain she suffered through and the memories flooding back. It does feel like the series had one or two too many episodes and could have told the story in a more contained formula.  However, if you were a big fan of the first series, you should continue to enjoy the adventures of the characters again.

Final ThoughtsRecipes for Love and Murder Series 2 continues a familiar series of stories but can feel longer than it needs to.

Episode 1

We start the show with journalist Lisa Wallace (Mullen) writing a story about her mother’s murder. She wants to run a campaign to help support shelters for abuse victims and her story should help that. Elsewhere, a local resident Amy Reynolds (Good) goes missing after a night out. Detective David Burkely (Leech) investigates an unusual message Lisa receives before the two believe the killer has returned. Lisa dives into her family’s past, which reveals more secrets from the criminal world her father was from.

This is a great first episode, it creates the mystery and exposes something much bigger going on. We get the history of the first event and the fact things could still be going on. It sucks us in ready to see where the story will go and how far the killer would go and how many victims are unaccounted for. (4/5)

Episode 2

This episode starts when Lisa’s story is released and the pressure is placed on the police. David finds an unlikely partner in the investigation connected to older cases. When a suspect is identified, the case is blown wide open. However, the public opinion of the law makes the investigation even more difficult to get straighter answers.

This moves the story on well, it keeps the two sides of the investigation separate too. We explore more of the police cover-up the previous cases and the reporter getting closer than they are prepared to. It keeps us wanting to know more and leaves plenty of mystery on the table. (4/5).

Episode 3

We begin this episode where Lisa and David locate a victim of the prime suspect. Lisa tries to comfort her and encourage her to tell her story to give the police a chance to investigate the suspect more. However, the investigation becomes complicated as David must deal with personal relationships. Meanwhile, the killer finds new targets.

This episode ups the stakes and shows the killer is getting far more dangerous than before. It also highlights the problems with how the police investigate any incidents, creating a much deadlier situation for the team to solve. (4/5)

Episode 4

We start with Lisa needing to make the impossible decision about which girl to save. The killer is mocking her and one of the victims is Amy’s sister. Elsewhere, David looks to keep his secret safe and the race to save the girls is on. Meanwhile, Lisa is forced to take information from an unlikely and potentially immoral place, but it could solve the mystery they have been searching for.

This episode takes things up to the next level showing how deadly the killer has become. Lisa balances out her impossible decision and the secrets of the area reveal something even more shocking. However, it is the battle to save the recently taken women that makes things even more intense. (4/5)

Episode 5

After the disturbing conclusion of the last episode, Lisa faces the reality of her decision. The new prime suspect has an alibi and the pressure to find the missing girls takes over. However, the people above are causing problems, and the witnesses are terrified of coming forward. Lisa makes the drastic decision to track the prime suspect against the orders of David, in hopes of finding the missing girls.

This brings us the most intense episode of the series so far and leaves us begging to return for the final episode. It makes everything clearer and leads to the biggest decisions of the characters’ lives. (5/5)

Episode 6

The final episode leads to Lisa and David needing to face some home truths. They must be honest to their loved ones, while the girls are still in danger. However, the police don’t know how to handle everything going on. The last prime suspect is cleared and they must find the real suspect before they murder the two girls.

This gives us the twists and turns we have been waiting for. Along with dealing with the personal factors that have caused so much trouble for the pair. It feels like an excellent conclusion to the series which has been paced brilliantly. (4/5)

Overall

The series kept us wondering where things could go throughout, each episode presented a new suspect. Each twist felt like it had an impact and the personal lives of everyone involved get challenged too. The acting is great too, with India Mullen and Allen Leech shining in the leading roles.

Final ThoughtsThe Vanishing Triangle is an excellent series that keeps us guessing throughout.
