Verdict: Mind Bending Mystery

 

Story: 8 Remains starts when Talli (Probst) is on her latest date with Damian (Waldis) only for it to take a twist, as he murders her, instantly spawning next to the crime, Talli must navigate through a mirror world, which will see her confront her past, present and future as she must figure out how to save herself from the killer.

As Talli travels through doors, she must confront her own past, leaving her questioning each decision she has made, while trying to out to escape the circle she has become trapped in.

 

Thoughts on 8 Remains

 

Characters – Talli is a young woman starting a relationship with the older, richer Damian, her latest getaway to one of his castles will change everything, she must navigate through a mirror world which will force her to face her past, one that hasn’t been easy for her, if she wants a future she must survive this maze and confront her murderer. Damian is the killer that takes Talli’s life, only to continue to haunt her in the afterlife as she searches for answers. He is controlling everything and enjoying leaving the women tortured in this world he has created. Josephine is another woman with a connection to Damian trapped in this world, she advises Talli how to get out of this world.

Performances – The performance from Maja-Celine Probst is the highlight of the performers, she must take her character through the largest range of emotions and see makes each believable through the journey. Gregory B Waldis as the villainous figure works very well too, he makes you hate him which is the most important part of this performance. The supporting cast do everything asked of them without stealing the spotlight too.

Story – The story is one that starts instantly by surprising us, it then becomes one that takes us on a journey that will be connected once everything has been seen, you will need to make sure you notice the smallest details to add the dots together. This story does remind me of another film that only I seem to have heard off ‘Left in Darkness’ which focuses on a victim tackling a killer after their death, only this one deals with the idea that she could escape this world. if you want to watch a story that will make you stop and think about everything you see, you will enjoy this one a lot.

Mystery – A Mystery film that continues to make you think even when you think you know what is happening, this is something we all want right? This doesn’t let you down.

Settings – The film keeps the settings simple, they are important locations in the life of Talli which explains why she is visiting them, they are used to help with the journey.

Special Effects – The effects are used when needed, we focus on the idea of the mirror world having walls Talli can’t get through.


Scene of the Movie – Taking control.

That Moment That Annoyed Me – This is a blink and you might miss something movie.

Final Thoughts – This is a mystery thriller that will keep you guessing, it will pull you in as you want to help Talli on her journey and it is anchored by a strong leading performance from Maja-Celine Probst.

 

Overall: Mystery film that keeps you guessing.

Near Dark (1987)

Plot: A small-town farmer’s son reluctantly joins a traveling group of vampires after he is turned by a beautiful drifter.

Verdict: Underrated Vampire Film

 

Story: Near Dark starts as young country man Caleb (Pasdar) meets a beautiful woman Mae (Wright) one night and after spending the night seeing different locations Mae leaves Caleb with a strong hicky.

What Caleb discovers is that Mae is in fact a vampire and she has turned him into on too, joining her group of vampires including Jesse (Henriksen), Severen (Paxton), Diamondback (Goldstein) and Homer (Miller) he finds himself drawn into a world of crime while his family worry about him.

As the group travels around America at night Caleb needs to prove his worth to the group and learn to kill but when he doesn’t he must fight to survive against the vampire while learning the cure for this new disease.

 

Thoughts on Near Dark

 

Characters/Performance – Caleb is just an everyday small town American young man who spends his nights looking to meet women and this time he meets a woman that will change his life, one that will turn him into a vampire as he must learn to adjust to this new life. Mae is the woman that attracts Caleb who does want out of this life or at least have someone else by her side. Jesse controls the group keeping them all in order not wanting to carry any dead weight. Severen is the character you will remember most because he is over the top and enjoys the kills.

Performance wise, Adrian Pasdar is fine but you can see he isn’t going to make it as a charismatic leading actor, Jenny Wright is also fine but doesn’t pull us into the whole stunning beautiful leading lay, with Lance Henriksen doing what you all know he can, be a good villain. Bill Paxton is the star of the show as we do remember nearly everything he does through the film.

Story – The story follows one man as he is turned into a vampire as he needs to learn to kill to survive while on the run with a villainous group of vampires. This takes a new approach the vampire genre showing the family feel to a group, a new look at the transformation and even introducing the idea of a full cure. I like this and believe it is fresh feeling to the vampire genre.

Action/Crime/Horror – The action is very simple and what we have come to expect, with the crime side of the story being how the vampires hunt feels very criminal in style with the horror being with what happens to the vampires meet sunlight.

Settings – The settings make this feel like a western in places as the group travel from town to town hunting.

Special Effects – The effects are all practical and they all look great when it comes to how the vampires are being affected by the sunlight.

Final Thoughts – This may well not be the first film that comes to mind when you think vampires but when you look at the greats this doesn’t come too far off being on their level.

 

Overall: Enjoyable, gritty and dark vampire thriller.

Verdict: Desperate Housewives: Serial Killer Edition

 

Story: The Ice Cream Truck starts as Mary (Russo) returns to her suburban home town to start a new life, all while her family finishes off school and work before joining her. Mary gets to meet the gossip girls Jessica (Barraford), Christina (Walter) and Katie (Towns-Cuellar), the creepy delivery man (Phillips) but strangest of all is an ice cream truck driving around the neighbourhood.

The ice cream truck is driven by the creepy mysterious man (Johnsen) who has a habit of inviting people into his truck and killing them. The people of the neighbourhood barely notice what is going on as this suburban nightmare grows for Mary.

 

Thoughts on The Ice Cream Truck

 

Characters/Performance – Mary is the wife and mother who has moved before the rest of the family to get the house set up and find inspiration for her latest writing project. Mary does struggle to enjoy returning to a suburban neighbourhood with people just waiting for the next chapter of gossip. Max is the teenage son of one of the neighbours, he is the local pot dealer which does help Mary get through the nosey neighbours. He also plays into the desperate housewives feel to the film. The Ice Cream Man drives around the neighbourhood trying to sale ice cream but if you disrespect him he will just kill the customer, he is social awkward fitting the killer stereotype.

Performance wise, Deanna Russo is impressive in the leading role, fitting the character required very well, John Redlinger also gives us a good performance as both the two characters offer up the Desperate Housewives feel to the film. Emil Johnsen gives us the horror side of the film as we get to see the darker character that when on screen is somebody you want to watch.

Story – The story does show us how difficult adjusting to the suburban neighbourhood for our lead character Mary, we get the temptation of romance, dealing with gossiping women and the strange people lurking around every corner. We honestly do get a true Desperate Housewives feel about most of the scenes, which is fine for the most part but if you want the horror side of the film it only comes out in the story in small parts.

Horror/Comedy/Mystery – The horror side of the film is used well when we see it, we have an Ice Cream Man that kills people, but I feel we did need to see this side of the film slightly more. The comedy I felt was mostly humour focused on the suburban lifestyle with the mystery being focused on just why the killer does everything.

Settings – The suburban setting does wonders for this film because it shows the new difficult world Mary must adjust too after spending her adult life in the big city. We get to see just how she doesn’t enjoy everything in this location.

Special Effects – Most of the kills are cleverly filmed off camera which lowest the need to spend too much time on the effects but we are left to imagine what is going on.

Final Thoughts – This is a different horror comedy that does work on levels you didn’t expect because it shows us how difficult the suburban life can be.

 

Overall: Enjoyably Fun Horror Comedy.

Aliens (1986)

Verdict: Still Stands the Test of Time

 

Story: Aliens starts when Ripley (Weaver) is finally rescued from her hyper sleep, only to find out that she has been sleeping for centuries, questioned for her action on the spacecraft she learns that the same planet LV-426 has been colonised with no problems from any alien species.  We get to see how the colony is building on the planet which includes us watching Newt (Henn) and her family being the ones to find the alien ship.

The company representative Burke (Reiser) looks to recruit Ripley into helping them once the company loses connect with the colony, this time armed with marines led by Lieutenant Gorman (Hope). The elite unit including Corporal Hicks (Biehn), Private Hudson (Paxton), Private Vasquez (Goldstein) and Private Drake (Rolston) to mention a few is armed to the teeth ready for any combat needed, but it is the android Bishop (Henriksen) that cause Ripley the worries especially after what happened last time she was on a mission with one.

Once at the colony the soldiers find the place abandoned at first until they find Newt only to learn the truth about what happened at the base. The unit find themselves under attack from multiply xenomorphs and only Ripley knows how to fight them off.

Aliens is the sequel to one of the greatest horror movies that actually takes the film in a different direction by adding action element. This doesn’t take away anything because if the sequel had just been on one ship with limited weapons it simply would have been a remake feeling, this story feels fresh because we already know the basics of what our heroes are up against we just needed to learn how they will deal with them this time. When it comes to the story it once again is simple soldiers versus aliens in a battle to survive which all works perfectly for this classic 30 years later.

 

Actor Review

 

Sigourney Weaver: Ripley is the lone survivor from the events of the first film, she has been in hyper sleep for years. She is charged for her actions as no evidence of any alien life form is discovered in the wreck, dealing with all the side effects we get to see how she is getting on with her life again. All this changes when the company that blamed her turned to her for help on the same planet that we first met a xenomorph. When things go wrong she takes charge of the situation while trying to protect a little girl. Sigourney was nominated for an Oscar for this performance and it would hard not to praise her brilliant performance.ripley

Carrie Henn: Newt is the little girl that was living on the colony before the attack, she is also the lone survivor once the soldiers turn up to deal with the situation. She has survived by hiding and offers the soldiers much needed advice on where to survive. Carrie is great in this role for such a young actress at the time.

Michael Biehn: Corporal Hicks has to take charge of the soldiers once his seniors become incapacitated. He will listen to Ripley and make the right decisions when it comes to fighting the xenomorphs. Michael is great in this role where he actually plays the sensible soldier.

Lance Henriksen: Bishop is the android on the mission, he is instantly disliked by Ripley but this time we only see good from the android who is willing to risk his own life to save the humans. Lance is great as this android keeping the emotionless expression throughout.

Support Cast: Aliens has a supporting cast that is mostly the soldiers who are generic in their own way along with the company man that also works for this film very well.

Director Review: James Cameron – James is a director that always makes classics and this could well be his best.

 

Action: Aliens is filled with combat driven action which comes off very nicely in the confined spaces.

Horror: Aliens is still filled with horror of isolation on the planet being hunted down by an alien enemy.

Sci-Fi: Aliens puts our characters in space and a new planet ticking off all of the sci-fi elements to make this an action sci-fi film.

Settings: Aliens creates a larger isolation idea with the characters being trapped on a base rather than a ship with no escape from the enemy.
Special Effects: Aliens has stunning effects that still stand the test of time.xena

Suggestion: Aliens is one I do feel everyone should have watched at least once in a lifetime. (Watch)

 

Best Part:  First meeting the aliens.

Worst Part: Depends which cut you watch, the shorter cut takes away a lot of back story.

Someone wants her in the worst way. Out alone at a charity event in Soho, Jennifer is drugged and taken. Held captive in a cell, Jennifer is subjected to a series of terrifying, life-threatening tortures that could only be conceived by a twisted, sadistic mind. It follows the story of one woman who is abducted and tortured, held against her will in a place where days turn into weeks.

 

Verdict: Thriller without a bite

 

Story: Captivity shows a girl who gets kidnapped put through tests that are mainly her screaming while the guy does nothing to her. Then we get the twist that works to explain why everything was always an almost. The characters are twisted but in the end it isn’t very original and will fail to truly test your belief. Let’s face it this is not about the story it is about the ‘gore’. (3/10)

Elisha Cuthbert: Jennifer is a model who gets kidnapped and put through tortures. Basically she screams a lot, moans a lot and just comes off rather annoying. (3/10)

The Black Waters of Echo’s Pond (2009)

Plot: Nine friends take a holiday at a Victorian home on a private island and uncover a game that when played brings out the worst in each of them. Jealously, greed, hatred, lust, all of the things they keep buried deep inside themselves rise to the surface and come to a boil.

 

Verdict: The Game of Death

Story: The Black Waters of Echo Pond is about a group of friends on a deserted island all going for a good time, but a board game brings out the worst in them. Each part of the friendships seems to get paired off to enter into battle over deep seeded difference between them all. Everything plays into the basic idea that if someone is pushed to the limits a darker person with a very different person comes out. We have a few twists and the generic characters used and a demon creature always lurking. It is nothing special but a good look at how people can hold things in. (6/10)

Robert Patrick: Pete the old man who lives on the island letting one if his family member use it for weekend with their friends. He is a generic old drunk who protects his island at all costs. Basic performance where he gets very little to work with. (6/10)

Danielle Harris: Kathy still grieving the loss of her brother thanks to a reckless choice by Rick, she will never forgive him but does she know the truth? The scream queen struggles to make an impact in this one. (6/10)

James Duval: Rick the man that nearly everyone hates of the group and no one knows why he has even been invited to the island. He becomes the hero of the piece trying to save the people he can but is this really just him getting what he really deserves for all his wrongs. Good performance but also the only really interesting character. (7/10)

Suggestion: This is still only on for the horror fans to try, it might not fill enough of the boxes a true horror fans likes. (Horror Fans Try)

A few years have past now Cotton Weary (Liev Schreiber) is now a talk show host of a show called 100% cotton. After filming a cameo in ‘Stab 3’ Cotton gets a phone call from Ghost face who is going to kill his girlfriend Christine Hamilton (Kelly Rutherford). Ghost Face leaves a picture of Sidney’s mother at the scene of the crime.

Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) is high flying presenter now and as she knows about the Woodsboro the police ask her help Detective Mark Kincaid (Patrick Dempsey). Sidney (Neve Campbell) lives in the middle of nowhere working from home as a phone support worker.

Dewey (David Arquette) now works as a technical advisor on ‘Stab 3’ which production gets put into question. the director Roman Bridger (Scott Foley) and producer John Milton (Lance Henriksen) try to keep the film in production. The actors from the movie Tyson Fox (Deon Richmond), Tom Prinze (Matt Keeslar), Sarah Darling (Jenny McCarthy) Angelina Tyler (Emily Mortimer) and Jennifer Jolie (Parker Posey).

With a video sent from Randy (Jamie Kennedy) giving the heroes the rules of trilogy. Having this information we are left to wonder who will survive this time and anyone could be the killer.

This being the third in the trilogy it was meant to be the last coming full circle and giving us the ending we were all looking forward too. Filled with twist and tension which goes to a higher level and even re-writing the history of the first two movies. The characters are all well developed to all be made out to be potential suspects. The final reveal is a big surprise. Still well worth a watch for slasher fans. We have the full victim list HERE.

Starting with the release of the movie ‘Stab’ starring Heather Graham as Casey from the original and Luke Wilson as Billy. Phil (Omar Epps) takes his girlfriend Maureen (Jada Pinkett Smith) to see the movie. Everyone is given a ghost face costume. while the movie is rolling a ghost face kills both Phil and Maureen make the publicity rise on the films opening night.

Sidney (Neve Campbell) now in college gets a prank phone call but quickly identifies the caller who hangs up once they are exposed. Sidney’s room mate Hallie (Elise Neal) keeps trying to encourage Sidney to join a sorority. When they find out about the murders Sidney goes to find Randy (Jamie Kennedy).

Randy is in a film class where they try to figure out if the movies created the ‘stab’ killer or not. In the class is Cici (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Mickey (Timothy Olyphant). In the class they have a big discussion about how sequels are not as good as originals keeping to the feel of the original not being to serious.

Sidney has a new boyfriend Derek (Jerry O’Connell). Having Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) turn up riding her fame from her book and movie. Gale meets a ambitious reporter Debbie Salt (Laurie Metcalf). Gale brings Cotton Weary (Liev Schreiber) to do an interview with Sidney about how she accused him and he turned out innocent. Completing the line up is Dewey (David Arquette) who comes to make sure Sidney is safe.

This time we are left with a slightly different list of suspects:

  • A reporter who keeps want to be the story
  • The Ambitious reporter wanting to make a name for herself
  • The Accused murderer of Sidney’s mother
  • The boyfriend proving she can pick the crazy ones
  • The Film student who loves sequels
  • The sorority who want to become the most popular

The Movie is a good follow up to the original. Having the idea of the release of the story in movie as background to the story of what is happening in these characters lives. Keeping its tongue in cheek style very nicely through out. Containing lots of twists and turns leading us to the big climax and revelation of who the killer is. The characters are all different and have very interesting potential motives. This is well worth a watch for slasher fans keeping the series worth watching and wanting more.

In a small mining town where one hundred Chinese workers are killed in a cave in the God of war and even bean curd Guan-Di in now the protector of the grave. When Jeff (Taylor Sharpe) and his three friends disturb the grave by stealing an ancient lock on the tomb Guan-Di rises from the the grave and kill the three friends.

Meanwhile Bruce Campbell (playing himself) in on the set of cave alien 2 a sequel to a movie he hated himself. Meeting his agent Mills (Ted Raimi) in a strip club to discuss his career chances. After a few to many drinks he struggles back to his caravan and drinks more before making a phone call t his ex wife Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss). Soon after a knock at the door from Jeff begging Bruce for help to take out Guan-Di thinking its just a movie pitch Bruce ignore Jeff. Jeff ends up kidnapping Bruce taking Bruce back to Gold Lick.

Upon arriving in Gold Lick Bruce is treated as a form of saviour. Jeff a huge Bruce Campbell fans has convinced the whole town Bruce can fight this monster. Meeting the Mayor (Ben L.McCain) Bruce is taken to a town meeting to learn about the monster he will be fighting. Bruce thinks this is just a present from his Mills so he just plays along. Kelly (Grace Thorsen) Jeff’s mum thinks Bruce is a fraud but the rest of the town believe in Bruce.

Upon going out on a hunt for Guan-Di Bruce finds out that Guan-Di is actually real and runs all the way back to his caravan. With the town all out of hope Jeff goes to fight Guan-Di on his own. Can Bruce Campbell be the hero his movies have made him out to be?

Verdict on My Name is Bruce

The B-movie legend Bruce Campbell makes and stars in My Name is Bruce a strong horror comedy that is a tongue in cheek look at his career. This is a good laugh for all fans of Bruce Campbell keeping you interested with his charm and one liners which he became famous for. Very enjoyable film that could have been more successful that is was. Ted Raimi playing multiple characters for extra comic value works well. This is a great entry-level horror movie.
