Badlands (1973) Movie Review

Director: Terrence Malick

Plot: An impressionable teenage girl from a dead-end town and her older greaser boyfriend embark on a killing spree in the South Dakota badlands.


Tagline – He was 25 years old. He combed his hair like James Dean. She was 15. She took music lessons and could twirl a baton. For a while they lived together in a tree house. In 1959, she watched while he killed a lot of people.

Verdict: Classic

Story: Badlands starts as we meet drifter Kit (Sheen) who moves between jobs with his latest being a garbage man, he meets the 15-year-old Holly (Spacek) on his rounds and the two start hanging out, as he starts a new job as a cowboy.

After Holly’s Father (Oates) finds out about their relationship, he forbids it, which sees Kit kill him and the lovers go on the run, living off the land, until the police start tracking down their criminal activities.

Thoughts on Badlands

Characters – Kit is a 25-year-old drifter, he hasn’t been able to hold down a job for long and now he has lost his latest one, until he meets Holly, where he tries his hand on the latest job, he gets jealous and protective of Holly, killing anyone who gets in their way. Holly is the 15-year-old that takes a shine to Kit, because of his James Dean looks and that he doesn’t just want her for sex, she will follow him to the ends of the Earth if this means they can be together, also telling the story. We only meet a few other characters along the way, with Holly’s father and helpful people that are mostly the victims of Kit’s aggressive behaviour.

Performances – Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek are both wonderful in the leading roles of this film, they show the opposites the two have, while the bond between them feels strong.

Story – The story here follows a drifter that falls in love with a teenage girl and the two must go on the run from the law, moving from state to state. First thing we must address, is the fact that a 25-year-old gets involved in a relationship with a 15-year-old, this is asked more questions than it answers with just how wrong this is. With the two lovers on the run from the law, it does show the rebellious ways of the younger generation through America and just how far they would go to escape what is going to be a slow future. It does have a nice happy feel to everything, despite the darker tone of everything happening.

Crime – The crime side of the film follows Kit start from just being somebody who might steal the odd thing, before turning into a cold-blooded killer that isn’t going to stop for anyone.

Settings – The film takes us through the southern states of America, showing how the open round could offer freedoms the pair want.


Scene of the Movie – The treehouse.

That Moment That Annoyed Me – We don’t seem to have any charges for taking a minor across state lines.

Final Thoughts – This is a nice crime story about two lovers, even though it does have a big creepy side to it, when you look into the ages of the two main characters.

Overall: Love and Crime.

Nemesis (2021) Movie Review

Nemesis – Lacks the Final Punch

Plot: An underworld kingpin’s past catches up with him when he returns to London, igniting an explosive chain of events which ends in revenge and murder.

Story: Nemesis starts when John Morgan (Murray) returns to London with his wife Sadie (Sothcott) with the simple plan to meet his daughter’s Kate (Moore) new partner. His arrival has seen detective Frank Conway (Moran) come after him, looking to lock him up for good, while rival crime boss Damien Osborne (Payne) gives him a strict warning.

When the past does start to catch up with Frank, he will end up caught up in the middle of revenge and murder, a path he can’t escape from without leaving a few more bodies left around him.

Thoughts on Nemesis

Characters & Performances – John Morgan is the crime boss that has returned to London, his actions have caused many people problems and now his meeting of his daughter’s new girlfriend, will see him facing his past. Billy Murray will always get the crime boss character done well, here is no different. Frank Conway is the cop that saw his childhood ruined by John, he has been waiting for him to return to get his own revenge on him, never wanting to cross the line of the law. Nick Moran strong as the brooding character. When it comes to the other characters, we get the family of John who has lived the life of luxury because of his actions and other people who have been waiting for him to return.

Story – The story here follows a crime boss who returns to London only to find himself getting caught up in the middle of a string of revenge plans against him for his previous actions. This story could very well have been one of the best ones in the gangster, crime boss style ones for years. We end up spending so much time just meeting the crime boss and seeing him try and leave the world behind, by the time we learn about most of the main targets motives, we are a long way into the film. This story does seem to lack the structure to make us care about any of the characters, because with the right build up, we could have given a lot of these characters sympathy and supported their decisions, instead of just ending up watching them make the same basic mistakes, talking too much. The story does try to be so clever with how everything is unfolding, but ends up falling flat because of the lack of interesting characters in the film.

Themes – Nemesis is a crime thriller that takes us into the locations you would expect to see around London, the local pub for the criminals to roam around, nothing that ends up being unique.

 

Nemesis is a movie that has so much potential with a concept, but doesn’t manages to put the pieces together to make it click.

Original Gangster (2020) Movie Review

Original Gangster – Simple Gangster Film

Story: Original Gangster starts when Castor gets orphaned by criminals, left to fend for himself in the streets of London. Castor (Mills) grows up to know how the survive and when he meets the man Milo (Reddington) who saved his life, he gets introduced into a new world.

Castor gets to work under crime boss Jean-Baptista Philippe (Guttenberg) who runs everything in London, as Castor continues to learn the world, all to impress Milo.

Thoughts on Original Gangster

Characters & Performances – Castor was a young boy when his parents are killed by criminals, he is left to fend for himself by the man that saved him. He grew up to be a streetwise man that isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty leaving bodies in his path. He will need to learn the new world of drug lords when he ends up meeting Milo again. Alex Mills does well in this role, showing us the transformation from tramp to gangster hitman. Jean-Baptiste Philippe is the ruthless crime boss that offers Castor a home and a job, he will expect him to complete the hits no matter what and will looks to talk him into the most difficult one. Steve Guttenberg does give us the over-the-top character which works well for the film, getting moments of humour from his wild behaviour. Milo is the man that spares young Castor’s life and ends up taking him under his wing years later. He helps Castor makes the contacts in the world, but doesn’t want him to get too close. Ian Reddington does bring the tough guy figure to life. The rest of the characters we meet do get fit the world created, adding to the colourful character involved.

Story – The story here follows an orphaned young boy that grows up to enter the same world that saw his parents killed and must navigate the world to survive. This does feel like the typical entry into the criminal underworld story, giving us the person that will guide them into and the boss that will expect them to do whatever they say. It is all told in a narration format showing us that we only get to see Castor point of view of the situation, or have moments told through the stories he was once told, which is kept up throughout the film well. It does seem to want to commit to be wacky, but doesn’t commit to going completely over the top.

Themes – Original Gangster is a crime movie that will take us into the world through London, which will make the backdrop work, with the size of the compound making the crime boss area interesting.

Original Gangster will be available on DVD & Digital Download from 5th April.

Original Gangster is a simple by the book introduction to the crime world without committing to the wacky world the characters seem to imply.

Coyote Lake (2019) Movie Review

Plot: Ester and her overbearing mother run a small bed-and-breakfast near the US/Mexico border. Two unwanted guests arrive, threatening everyone’s safety. But the two women hide a secret that may prove the most dangerous of all.

Story: Coyote Lake starts as we see how Ester (Mendes) and her mother Teresa (Barraza) run a small bed-and-breakfast by the US/Mexico border, they have a routine, which will see them drug the guest, and when their latest operation is going on, they get unwanted guests, Paco (Velez) and the injured Ignacio (Perez).

Both sides are looking at the next step of their lives, with both having their own plans with what to do with each other, making the blossoming romance between Ester and Paco, even more dangerous.

Thoughts on Coyote Lake

Characters – Ester is the daughter that has been working with her mother for years on trying to raise money by killing guests at the bed-and-breakfast, she hasn’t seen the outside world before, with her only trip being to collect the drugs to knock the victims out, when Paco shows her more of what could be, she finds herself wanting to stop and escape this world. Teresa is the mother of Ester, her husband was killed by the Cartel and now she has raised Ester to follow her work to kill the guests, she claims it is to escape the world, but she never seems to get to far away. Paco is the young dealer that wants to help Ester escape this world, he sees that she wants more from her life and he would like to offer it to her.

Performances – Camila Mendes brings all the innocence to her role, showing how she has been pushed into this life without knowing more, starting to question what is right. Adriana Barraza brings the cold-hearted mother role to life, where she can come off like the sweet old lady, but is hiding the darker side. Andrew Velez shows us that both sides of the criminal lines are filled with people pushed into them with his desperate to escape role.

Story – The story here follows a mother and daughter living away form the world that have their own scheme, where they are killing the guests at their bed-and-breakfast, a plan which they have been running for a while, which gets interrupted when two dealers stumble upon them, looking to take control of the property. This is a story which shows us two young people that have been dragged into a criminal world, one they didn’t want to be part of by their elders, never getting to live the life of a free honest person. Add in the cat-n-mouse style battle between the two sides, who both have a plan for each other, while it could mean risking more. We get a feeling of watching ‘Dexter’ too through this film, with the operation seemingly to be going so smoothly. This does show us how people can be led astray and how they need to earn their freedom, with a tension that can be sliced with a knife, you will be left wondering who will make it out alive.

Crime – The crime side of this film shows us two operations going on, first the murderous mother and daughter, then the dealing men that come together in a battle to stay ahead of each other’s secrets or plans.

Settings – Most of the film is set in the remote isolated bed-and-breakfast, which does play into the ideas that Ester and Teresa are doing, no one will see what they are doing or miss the people staying there.

That Moment That Annoyed Me – It isn’t completely clear how long Ester and Teresa have been doing this.

Final Thoughts – Coyote Lake is a tense affair that will see two different styles of criminals trying to stay ahead of each other in a cat-n-mouse game.

The Fanatic (2019) Movie Review

Story: The Fanatic starts as we meet horror fanatic Moose (Travolta) who hustles on the street corners for money, while collect film memorabilia and autographs of his favourite stars, with his latest favourite star being Hunter Dunbar (Sawa).

After Moose might finally get to meet Hunter, things end abruptly as Hunter needs to leave, with Moose turning to his paparazzi friend Leah (Golja) to learn where Hunter leaves, crossing the line between fan and stalker.

Thoughts on The Fanatic

Characters – Moose is an autistic man that has an obsessive nature, which will see him collect horror film memorabilia and autographs, he has quite the collection, but what he wants most is Hunter Dunbar’s autograph, when he doesn’t get the autograph, he starts to stalk the actor, turning to breaking into his house, never understanding the lines he has crossed. Hunter Dunbar is an actor that has been in movies, while never seemingly reaching the next level of stardom, he seems more like a cult star more than anything else, he isn’t happy with the invasion of the privacy making it clear to Moose to stay away from his personal life. Leah is Moose’s closest friend, she works as a paparazzi always looking for snaps of the celebrities in Hollywood, she tries to help and advice Moose becoming scared of what he might do.

Performances – John Travolta commits to his role, we never know what he will make his character do next, in what is part uncomfortable and part mesmerizing to see. Devon Sawa turns from the once stalker to the stalked here, showing the pressure of celebrity brings when someone invades the private life. Ana Golja shows us how someone could survive Hollywood in a way that isn’t always the best for the greater good of the area.

Story – The story here shows us how one autistic man can not always understand the line between right and wrong, when it comes to getting closer to a celebrity he worships and shows us what will happen if he crosses the line. This is an interesting story that does put a firm highlight on how the celebrity world can see people going to extreme measures to get what they want, it will show us how fans can cross the lines, but it does it in a way where the fan isn’t fully aware of the lines he has crossed by giving him a mental handicap. This story does border on all sorts of lines, from terrible to genius, it just never manages to fall into either side or committing to trying to go against other movies we might have seen before.

Crime – The crime side of this film comes from seeing just how many lines Moose would cross, showing how stalkers could go too far.

Settings – We use Hollywood as the setting here, seeing the boardwalk where people will try to make money, the celebrity homes and the struggle for the rest in smaller apartments.

That Moment That Annoyed Me – Not sure why Hunter doesn’t report the first incident.

Final Thoughts – This is a strange movie that is easily one that could surprise us along the way and could be watched for all the wrong reasons.

Promising Young Woman (2020) Movie Review

Promising Young Woman – Stylish Revenge Thriller

Story: Promising Young Woman starts as we meet Cassandra (Mulligan) who goes around meeting men in a drunken state, where she teaches lessons to them who try to take advantage of vulnerable women. She gave up her career in medical school to work in a small coffee shop, where she carefully plans her revenge on the people that did her wrong in the past.

As Cassandra meets Ryan (Burnham) she looks to complete her mission, only for it to take one more twist, which will give her the closure she has been desiring.

Thoughts on Promising Young Woman

Characters & Performances – Cassandra was once a promising medical student who dropped out after an incident, she now works in a coffee shop and spends her nights looking to send a message to men who take advantage of drunk women, she is on a mission to get revenge, something she has planned for and wants to see people experience the pain she did. She is calm and calculated with every action, not taking any abuse from any man. Carey Mulligan does give us a career best performance in a role that shows just how easily someone can be broken by never getting the closure she needed. Ryan is the former classmate who has go onto become a doctor, he comes into Cassandra’s life, offering her a chance to escape this darker life she has found herself in. Bo Burnham does show excellent chemistry with Mulligan to make his character different to most of the other guys in the film. We do meet a host of people in Cassandra’s life, which include her parents that want her to move on, work friend Gail who is filled with a positive attitude, along with the people Cassandra has been lining up to get revenge on. Each member of the cast shines in this film too.

Story – The story here follows a former med student who is looking to teach men a lesson on taking advantage of them, while planning her own revenge on the people that never listened to a story in her life. This story is a smart revenge plot, which is clearly trying to raise the awareness of sexual assault and the lack of ways of solving the problems around it, with the usual ‘he said, she said’ reaction to it happening, forcing our lead character to solve the problem in her own way. The way this story is told, is very stylish, showing how close to being completely over the edge Cassandra could be, or how easily she give this up and try and live a normal life, which is a big part of the appeal, most revenge thrillers, usually show the person having no other option than to continue. The one part of the story I would have liked to have seen more about, it what she does to the men, we learn she doesn’t kill them, but just what does she do to send the message?

Themes – Promising Young Woman discusses the biggest talking themes of the modern era, showing how the #Metoo movement is being handled, showing how the ‘I was a kid’ argument can’t be an excuse anymore, it is played out like a revenge thriller that is teaching the people the lesson in a way where they can feel the pain of what might have happened too. The use of music is wonderful too, with the twist on the Toxic song playing a huge part of the biggest environment we are tackling here.

 

Promising Young Woman is a brilliant directorial debut from Emerald Fennell that is filled with style, class and a direct message.

ABC Film Challenge – Oscar Nomination – J – Animal Kingdom (2010) Movie Review

Story: Animal Kingdom starts when Joshua (Frecheville) finds his mother having an overdose, which will see him turn to his grandmother Janine (Weaver) who welcomes him into her criminal family with Baz (Edgerton), Darren (Ford) and Craig (Stapleton) who start to try and teach him how they operate for Andrew ‘Pope’ Cody (Mendelsohn).

When the family starts clashing with the police, Josh finds himself in the middle of helping his estranged family and working with the cops to bring the family down.

Thoughts on Animal Kingdom

Characters – Josh has lived with his mother that has been on drugs most of his life and now she has overdosed leaving him without family needing to turn to the estranged one he hasn’t had contact with, he is thrown into a world of drugs and crime, where he isn’t willing to take part in, but can’t escape without being left alone. Pope is the most aggressive member of the criminal family, often left out of family get togethers, but always able to manipulate the family members into committing the crimes. Janine is the grandmother that lets her boys do the dirty work for the business, without needing to get involved herself, keeping herself clean from any police action. Detective Nathan Leckie is the man that tries to help Josh escape this world, looking to bring the family down once and for all.

Performances – James Frecheville in the leading role does bring us the reclusive performance that doesn’t know how to grief and how to escape this world well, with star making performances in the supporting roles for Ben Mendelsohn and Jacki Weaver.

Story – The story here follows a young man that finds himself drawn into a criminal family after his own mother dies, needing to figure out what is best for himself in a world where he doesn’t know if there is an safe way out. This does fall into the set of stories which will see the new person thrown into a world they are not used to, needing to figure out how to survive it, when any wrong move could see him killed. We are kept guessing with plenty of shocking moments we don’t see coming happening, which highlights just how deadly this world is for everyone involved. We do however have some strange choices as to why certain characters commit certain decisions.

Crime – The crime side of the film shows just what the family does get up to and how they will do anything to keep their operation running smoothly.

Settings – The film uses the settings to show us how drug dealer can be operating in any neighbourhood, how they will feel like part of the community, grabbing the attention when the police do get involved.


Scene of the Movie – We need to talk, Pope and Josh.

That Moment That Annoyed Me – Certain moments with Pope feel like they could have even more shock value to them, with what goes through his head.

Final Thoughts – Animal Kingdom is a gritty crime drama with excellent performances that help elevate everything we see along the way.

Kidulthood (2006) Movie Review

Plot: A day in the life of a group of troubled 15-year-olds growing up in west London.

Verdict: Streets Trouble 101

Story: Kidulthood starts as we follow the school teenagers in a west London school, where Sam (Clarke) controls people, Trife (Ameen) is starting to break into the drug world, while Alisa (Madrell) is dealing with an unexpected pregnancy, where the bullying through the school is shocking to see, with the gang mentality leading to the suicide of one of the students.

We follow the day after the suicide, where Alisa and Becky (Winstone) go on a bender, drinks and drugs, while Trife, Jay (Deacon) and Moony (Oyeniran) are getting into trouble with their rivalry with Sam.

Thoughts on Kidulthood

Characters – Trife or Trevor does make drugs with his time in school, he learns his ex is now pregnant and is getting tired of the gangs around the area, causing the problems in his life, Alisa is pregnant after teaching on Trevor, she doesn’t know who the father is and is still in the shock of seeing a friend from school commit suicide. Sam is the biggest bully in the school, he pushes people into doing his dirty work and forces people to do what he wants with intimidation. We do see the friends of Trevor’s who are more trouble than they seem to be, the selfish friend Becky who doesn’t help Alisa through her struggle and the people that are the brunt of the abuse. Most of these characters are not likable, while Trevor and Alisa are trying to escape this world for the better, they are still making the naïve decisions.

Performances – The performances in the film are strong with Aml Ameen, Red Madrell and Noel Clarke bring the strength and weaknesses in their characters to life, showing just how aggressive the world around them is.

Story – The story here follows the day in the life of a group of teenagers in the aftermath of a suicide of a bullied classmate, showing how they are out of control and making mistakes which will stop them escaping the vicious circle. This story does take focus on how the gang mentality in the London can take a hold on young people, forcing them to make bad decisions in life which will ruin their chances of a future. We do have a couple of important themes, first is the underaged pregnancy and how to deal with it, while the suicide doesn’t get enough attention, because nobody seems to get to pay for their behaviour for this incident. The themes of growing up don’t seem to get the full attention because the young people seem like they are in a position where they simply can’t be saved from.

Crime/Romance – The world the characters are in shows us just how the criminal behaviour of the youngsters is in , will continue to grow, with the romance being what could have been, with everyone seemingly willing to cheat on each other.

Settings – The film uses the London setting to show how the gangs are always protecting and shows the divide between people in such a close area.

Final Thoughts – This is an interesting look at how the neighbourhood would act around London, even though it wants to try and tackle bigger issues, it fails to address them well enough.

Overall: Interesting Vision of London.

The White Tiger (2021) Movie Review

The White Tiger – A Brilliant Examination of Class in India

Director: Ramin Bahrani

Starring: Priyanka Chopra, Rajkummar Rao, Adarsh Gourav, Mahesh Manjrekar, Perrie Kapernaros

Plot: The epic journey of a poor Indian driver who must use his wit and cunning to break free from servitude to his rich masters and rise to the top of the heap.

Story: The White Tiger starts as we meet Balram (Gourav) a young man from India that grew up in the poor part of the country, known as the darkness, he knows he wants better only he believes he will only ever be a servant, finding a role as a driver for Ashok (Rao) and his wife Pinky (Chopra).

As the three become friends, despite Balram still working for them, they show him respect as an employee, rather than seeing as a servant, an incident changes everything, with the elders looking for Balram to take the fall, this is when he decides he needs to stop letting the rich take advantage of the poor.

Thoughts on The White Tiger

Characters & Performances – Balram grew up in the poorest part of India, he never got an education or facing much of a future, until he takes a job as a driver, seeing himself as a servant, working for one of the richest families around, he is treated badly until he starts working for the son of the family who has seen more of the world, places where servants are treated with respect, he sees the good in him and his wife, but always finds himself back at the bottom of the food chain. He is our narrator and we learn from the opening that he has made it rich, we are learning how this happened and how he refused to let the rich walk over the poor. Adarsh Gourav gives us the strongest performance in the film, seeing the moments where he is breaking down are the most powerful moments in the film. Ashok is the son of the family that give Balram the job, he has spent time in America, which has seen him open his eyes to treating people more equally, sticking up for Balram, but always being in his father shadow of traditions. Rajkummar Rao does everything very well through the film, showing the difficulties of being from power, wanting to be more accepting, but not understanding the divide. Pinky is the wife of Ashok who has always pushed him to treat people better, she is sick of the divides in the country and pushes for the family to treat Balram with respect, challenging the traditions of class in the country. Priyanka Chopra does bring us a strong character one we would have liked to have seen more off in the film. We do get a host of elders who all are looking at different people through different eyes who could both make a break the careers, caught up in the traditions instead of forward thinking.

Story – The story here follows the life of a young man who grew up in the poor side of India to become a driver for a powerful family, giving him a chance to learn about the world and put himself into a position of power, a place where he is telling the story of how he got there. The story will give us an examination of class in India, seeing how the poor are never given much of a chance to make it in life, expected to work for the rich as servants, not employees, we focus on how one man looked to break the traditions in the culture after learning from everything that he sees as wrong in the previous methods. The one big weakness does come from the narration meaning we know success is going to happen, so anything truly bad is only a stepping stone or learning curve for the man.
