Today I am looking at my favourite Stephen King adaptation. I am not including The Shining due to him not seeing it as the best adaptation himself. I am also only including the ones I have seen, so you think something else should be on the list it might be that I haven’t seen it.

Today I am looking at my favourite video game adaptations. I may not have played many of these games but I generally enjoy these films. I am only adding one per franchise so even if one isn’t very good the rest save it.

10. Tekken (2010)

Tekken games have a very thin story line about winning fighting competitions against the best fighters from around the world. The films offers that but went pretty much under the radar in the UK but when it comes to fight game to film this is the best.

9. Wing Commander (1999)

The space adventure could have been put to film a little before the time where everything was capable but in the end we get a fun film but could be why more sci-fi games don’t get made into films.

8. Doom (2005)

If you played the game you hate this film, but as a film on its own it works as a good sci-fi thriller. Trying to put the first person scene tries to bring the gamer fans back but only gives you a headache. One of the Rock’s first that wouldn’t be in his safety zone he quite often slams it.

7. Prince Of Persia The Sands Of Time (2010)

It would be fair to say this was the biggest production of any of the video game adaptations the one most people looked forward to but also let down by. It is fun much like the Mummy films but another film that suffers because the gamers didn’t like it.

6. Alone In The Dark (2005)

This is the most hated adaptation on the list which I think is a little bit unfair to the film itself. It may not follow the game but as I have never played the game I enjoyed the basic storyline being told.

5. Mutant Chronicles (2008)

This one may surprise many people as even I haven’t heard of the game, but the dark tale would fit into a modern video game world with ease and could easily be compared to many other games out now.

4. Hitman (2007)

Out of all the films on my list this could be the one that got the best reception from the critics. Agent 47 looks fully authentic to what the game created and the story is solid in its creation.

3. Lara Croft Tomb Raider (2001)

Arguable the biggest female name in video games got the big screen treatment with Angelina Jolie in the role. It was the best action adventure adaptation it was met well by the non-gamers fans and gamers fan alike.

2. Resident Evil (2002 – )

With the franchise still going strong the original character Alice goes through the series meeting the video game characters in her fight against Umbrella. The series had been getting worse but has returned to its best with its last outing and has one more to complete the series out later 2014.

1.       Silent Hill (2006)

When it comes to the adaptations this has to be my favourite as it creates a creepy eerie atmosphere that continues from start to finish. Even if this was a film on its own it would be one of the best horror films of recent years.

When it comes to remakes we sometimes get some unnecessary ones that ruin a classic, we sometimes get some that are bigger budget to low budget that get edited down for a younger audience. The films I have picked are ones that I enjoyed the original only to watch the remake butcher it.

10. Step Father

When Terry O’Quinn created the creepy step father it was always going to be hard to get the same level. This remake fails to create the atmosphere and genuine sinister action that the original held.

9. Straw Dogs

When Dustin Hoffman stared in the original it was one of the talking points of film with its controversial material. This remake tries to be a simple copy and again fails to do it as it doesn’t cross the lines the original did.

8. Black Xmas

Trying to recreate a classic horror film with little or no attempt to create the atmosphere from the original. Not to mention the title change to try and sound modern.

7. Planet Of The Apes

When you get Tim Burton on board for a film you think it will be a good thing, this is not true when it comes to remakes with the complete copy of the original right down the same twist ending.

6. Piranha 3D

This was a perfect example of using the torture porn rather than a story. The gore is way over the top and the use of nudity is just lazy to get horny guys to watch this over a better film.

5. Day Of The Dead

I don’t really know where to start with this but zombies that crawl along the celling compared to the original trying to train a zombie to be human again. This is messy and ridiculous that unlike Dawn of the Dead remake ruins the classic.

4. Friday The 13^th

As Friday the 13^th is one of my favourite film franchises I was looking forward to this, after Halloween remake. I was wrong very wrong this just didn’t follow the ideas from the original material and instead of the slasher film it just goes for blood and nudity for the sake of it.

3. The Fog

This one is about the big budget remake of an atmospheric classic. It loses the ideas from the original material and instead of using the slow build up that made the first such a classic.

2. Total Recall

Arnie made one of the most iconic film performances in the original, it simply didn’t need to be remade especially with Colin Farrell stepping up and failing to improve the role and making the original even more loved.

1. Evil Dead

One of my favourite horror films is the original Evil Dead films. This is awful it is just blood for sake of it, it loses all what the film stood for and I wish I never have to watch it again.

With it being Valentine’s Day this weekend I put together my top ten favourite romantic comedies. I am not the biggest fan of romantic comedies and many of the films on the list won’t make many other peoples lists.

10. She’s Out Of My League (2010) Review

When average Joe Kirk (Jay Baruchel) meets the perfect girl Molly (Alice Eve) he has to overcome his belief that he is a five at best and she is a perfect 10. What this film gives the average guy the belief that he can get any girl they want if only they act and treat them correctly.

9. The Proposal (2009)

When hard driving editor Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) working visa is set to expire she force her assistant Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds) to marry her and get her a green card. When the two spend the weekend with Andrew’s family they slowly start to fall for each other. What follows is a series of events that prove that you never know someone until you spend time with someone.

8. Love Actually (2003)

This is Richard Curtis’ stories of love leading up to Christmas. We have a group of different scenarios all giving a feel good side to love. Some stories are funny like the body doubles while some are more serious like the family being torn apart by an assistant.  With most of the stories inter weaving add to the story.

7. Gigantic (2008) Review

When mattress salesman Brian (Paul Dano) meets young lady Happy (Zooey Deschanel) his plans to adopt a Chinese baby start becoming more difficult as he slowly starts to fall for the Happy. In what are two very different characters than what we are used to seeing as leads in Romantic Comedies we get a very good realistic tale of love happening with someone and when you least expect it.

6. When Harry Met Sally (1989)

The story follows Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) to very different people who met on a road trip home and become friends and over the years, in a series of will they won’t scenarios we get to see how even as two friends the opposite of sex can fall in love over time.

5. Definitely Maybe (2008)

When Will Hayes (Ryan Reynolds) tells his young daughter about his three loves in life as she has to work out which one is her mother. In what is a series of light hearted comedy moments to show how some people will come into people’s lives can change you. This is one example that falling for a woman can ruin your career if you are not careful.

4. Ruby Sparks (2012) Review

In this story Calvin (Paul Dano) is struggling in his personal life and love life, until one day he starts writing about a young lady Ruby Sparks (Zoe Kazan). Somehow she becomes real and he doesn’t know how to deal with as he starts a relationship with his creation, but when things start going stale he tries to improve things with dire consequences.

3. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) Review

IN what is a adaption of William Shakespeare’s Taming Of the Shrew we follow a new boy Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) try to find a way to date Bianca (Larisa Oleynik), The only way this can happen is if he can find a date for her older sister Kat (Julia Stiles) enter bad boy Patrick (Heath Ledger). In what is a great story of teenage love and struggles through high school this fast became one of the best stories of making it out and standing up for what you want.

2. Silver Linings Playbook (2012) Review

When bi-polar Pat (Bradley Cooper) finds his wife cheating on him he ends up in a psychiatric ward. Forced to move back home with his parents he meets depressed Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence) and they become friends before becoming close friends that change each other’s lives. This is quite possible the best of all the films on this list, it has so many great scenes and flawless performances from all the stars.

1.       500 Days Of Summer (2009) Review

What is not a love story but a story of love we follow Tom (Joseph Gordon Levitt) and his whirlwind relationship with Summer (Zooey Deschanel). Both wanting different things we see how one man’s whole life goes from brilliant to empty thanks to his over emotional attachment to Summer. In what is possibly the best story of real love as we all have been in some part of the love story in our lives.

Today I am going to look at my favourite remakes, the films on this list are not always the most successful but they are the ones I enjoyed watching the most. I have also only films that I have seen at least parts of the original. So if you favourite is not on the list the chances are I won’t have seen the original.

10. The Mummy (1999) Remake of The Mummy (1932)

I know most people will not like this choice and what was once a horror has turned into an action adventure. I enjoyed the remakes they were fun and light hearted. The Mummy figure turned from being a bandaged slow moving monster to a creature that can control his environment once he is back to full power.

Even though the rumour is that a Mummy reboot in coming up which will take the creature back to its darker side, only time will tell.

9. My Bloody Valentine (2009) remake of My Bloody Valentine (1981)

This is the first of many horror films to make my list and with this one we get a film that uses 3D a bit too much but the basic slasher side of the film is much bloodier than its predecessor. It was a positive modern day take on the genre after the original is very slow moving.

The one biggest plus for this film is that they were brave enough to change the twist ending that everyone was expecting.

8. Mother’s Day (2010) remake of Mother’s Day (1980)

Troma have made some of the worst cheap horror films of all time and recently they have been getting remade with a bigger budget. This time the story is similar but cuts out some of the violence used before and adds some genuine tension.

This is one horror film that seemed to get over looked in 2010 but in the end it is a bit of a horror gem.

7. Halloween (2007) remake of Halloween (1978)

This choice is like marmite you either love it or hate it. For me this is one of those examples of good use of a remake where it takes very small elements from the first and instead of copying it re-creates the type of horror we see.

This doesn’t mean I dislike the original both films I think are good in their own way. This is one example of how a classic can be remade and still be a good film.

6. Dawn Of The Dead (2004) Remake of Dawn Of The Dead (1978)

Another film here that has had people talking since it came out. The original is one of the best horror films ever made. The remake offers a modern take on a similar story of a group of survivors trying to live out a normal existence in a shopping mall during a zombie apocalypse.

Using the new fast moving zombies and a large group of disposable survivors we have a lot more blood and gore as well as one of the funniest chainsaw death in recent film.

5. The Crazies (2010) Remake of The Crazies (1973)

Here is another film that was made with little money that created an atmospheric viral outbreak that followed a couple of survivors hiding from a constant threat. The remake ups the stakes using improved military hunting for any survivors as well as using the zombie like reaction to an infection.

4. Red Dragon (2002) Remake of Man Hunter (1986)

When Anthony Hopkins first became Hannibal Lecter many were surprised that he wasn’t the first actor to play the role. It what was a bit of a box office bomb Man Hunter was Hannibal first outing and it is still a good film in its own right. After two successful films with Hopkins in the role the remake Red Dragon came along.

The new Red Dragon was trying to rekindle the brilliance of Silence Of The Lambs and even though it doesn’t get to the same level it still a good film using some of the character we have all got to know.

3. Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes (2011) Remake of Escape From The Planet Of The Apes (1971)

After the first attempt of a remake turned out horrible a lot of people were left sceptical about this film. Instead of remaking a classic they choose to remake one of the weaker films in the series which not many people had seen.

It what turns into an origin story about how the outbreak first happened this turns into one of the best films of the year and with some brilliant scenes and story this ends up being one of the best remakes of the noughties.

2. The Departed (2006) Remake of Infernal Affairs Trilogy (2001)

The only film that made my list that is a remake of a foreign language film that takes elements from the whole trilogy and turns it into one of the best crime dramas of all time. It has Oscars to its name as well as some full A list cast giving brilliant performances.

1.       The Thing (1981) Remake of The Things From Another World (1951)

This had to be the choice everyone was expecting to see, it is considered one of the best films ever made let alone remakes. I don’t know what else I can say that hasn’t already been said about this film other than this is my favourite remake so make sure it is on you watched list.

Today marks Christian Bale birthday, let’s look at my favourite roles of his career.

10. John Connor – Terminator 4 Salvation

When Christian got cast as John Connor people got excited, once the famous audio got released of him having a rant at director of photography people started to turn on the choice. He steps into the role as the third actor to do so.

This john is more of a freedom fighter in the war we have heard happens for three films, he does offer the most mature role but his hot headedness makes the character at bit too generic.

9. Quinn Abercromby – Reign Of Fire

Quinn lives in the world ruled by dragons, Quinn leads a group of survivors who just hope to survive the dragon attacks until a solider and his army give him one final chance to take out the dragons once and for all.

8. Dan Evans – 3:10 To Yuma

Dan Evans is a small time rancher who agrees to take an outlaw into his protection until the train comes along to take him away. In a cat and mouse like tale the outlaw tries to psych out Dan, with plenty of gun battles we see each other them in fine action scenes.

7. John Preston – Equilibrium

John Preston is from a world where having emotions is considered a crime punishable by death. John is an agent who has to track down the people breaking the law until he finds out his partner breaks the law. John ends up leading a fight back against the organisation to make everyone free to have emotions again.

6. Trevor Reznik – The Machinist

Trevor is an industry worker who hasn’t slept in a year before starting to question his own sanity. This role will always be remembered because of the dramatic weight loss Christian had to undertake.

5. Howl – Howl’s Moving Castle

Providing the voice in the English verison of the Japanese classic. Howl is a young wizard who along with his magical house is stuck in a curse and only a young girl cursed with the body of an old woman can save him.

4. Jim Graham – Empire Of The Sun

In what was his first major role working under Steven Spielberg Christian’s character Jim struggles to survive in Japanese occupation during world war two and this will always be remembered as one of the best child star performances of all time.

3. Bruce Wayne – Dark Knight Trilogy

Bruce Wayne started the new revolution of comic book heroes with one of the darkest creations in the comic book world, bring the series back to a much more realistic scenario. Bruce was always over shadowed by huge powerhouse villainous performance in the Joker, Bane and Scarecrow, but will always be considered one of the best Batman performances of all time.

2. Patrick Bateman – American Psycho

Patrick Bateman is banker by day, but by night he is a deranged a serial killer. With some unique kills with some very over the top eccentricity this role will always be remembered as one of his best.

1.       Alfred Borden – Prestige

The prestige has more twists and turns you could imagine. Even though the film seems to shine more of a spotlight on Hugh Jackson’s role, it is Bale performance that really shines through as the gritty magician who will do everything to perfect his art.

This restart button on the Marvel comic book movies has created a full range of the best superhero characters. Having each Superhero having an origin film before the grand battle where they unite also adds some great character development against the usual dull created characters in the past.

John McClane has a lot of bad days, with Die Hard being one of the best action films ever made, the franchise has being able to put John in more and more ridiculous situations over the years. After the last outing which was awful these films need to either end or get a real re-boot no more sequels please.

As the two franchises ended up going head to head I will put them together as one on the list. Alien was ground breaking film with the shock kill of John Hurt’s character in one of the most memorable deaths in screen history. Aliens is one of the best sci-fi films ever made and even though the next two sequels try to go in different directions. Predator was a great survival horror sci-fi film and with the first set in the woods and the second in the city they both create a very good atmospheric film. Once they joined together both franchises got killed off as the standard drops dramatically. But with new re-boots in Predators which was very good and Prometheus which isn’t a direct prequel but to the standard of film we are expecting to see.

The Saw films where do you start? Saw was one of the best twist riddled film ever made, it came nowhere and made mega money, unfortunately the studio wanted to make more money and the sequels start. Each sequel pushes the limits of the torture porn explosion and each sequel tried but failed to ever match the twist in the original. With Saw 6 being the low point in the series by throwing out all the rules set up in the previous films it was up to Saw 3D to finish the series on a high, it did with a very nice twist which people did see coming but it was more when. Rumour is they want to reboot the franchise hopefully they won’t though.

This is one of my favourite horror franchises most of the films are not the greatest things made, I prefer these over Halloween but it is very hard to split this from A Nightmare On Elm Street. I picked this one because of its longevity and Jason is just nonstop brutality. It is another on the list that got rebooted but this one’s reboot was awful.

With two separate takes on the Batman universe a dark comic book like world created by Tim Burton before that got ruined by Batman & Robin. Christopher Nolan recreated a dark real world that Batman would be part of with the endless discussions about which Joker was the best this franchise will always have people talking and keep people entertained.

X-Men lead the way in the new wave of comic book adaptations making everything happen in a real world scenario. We have had sequels, prequels, spin offs in an attempt to keep things fresh and it has worked. With the upcoming Days of Futures Past which combines all of them together this could end up giving us the best in the franchise so far.

The video game that turned into one of the most profitable film franchises. Disliked by the gamers but as I never played the games I enjoy the films, they are easy to watch. Alice has become an icon of the franchise despite never appearing in the games. This franchise is unlike many as it is the 3^rd entry which is the weakest and the latest two being the high points since the original. It usually creates a cast of disposable characters in which no one seems to be safe to survive to the next film.

Vin Diesel and the late Paul Walker juggernaut that just keeps picking up pace as it continued. The roots in the film are about friendship and family but with all the outrageous races will keep you very much entertained. With 5 and 6 having the addition of Dwayne Johnson the muscle got increased, but it is the two stories that add something to the franchise where it is not just about the cars it has heist aspects in one and working for the authorities in the other.

George Romero directs every single one of these films each with a different message. With the exception of a small cameo in each other’s films for Diary and Survival each film introduces us to new characters facing up against the endless hordes of zombies. Each film also shows different times passing and how people have dealt with the outbreaks.

Today is John Carpenter’s birthday; he is one of the best horror directors of all time. I have decided to pick my top 10 favourite directing pieces of work. I have not seen all of his films so anything that you may consider better than any piece of work on the list will more than likely be the reason.

10. Vampires (1998)

James Woods & Daniel Baldwin take the lead roles in this vampire film. They play vengeful vampire slayers who have to face a race against time to a powerful vampire from getting his hands on a crucifix which will make him endure sunlight.  

We get an all-out blood bath in opening scene which leads to the vengeance. I have never been recommended this film and I am not sure why, it fills all the essential qualities for a violent vampire film, lots of blood, gore, unstoppable villain. So check this one out if you enjoyed Near Dark. 

9. Ghosts Of Mars (2001)

Natasha Henstridge, Ice Cube & Jason Statham star as Martian police unit who are sent to quarantine a dangerous outbreak in a mining outpost. After they arrive they find out that the inhabitants have become possessed by the former inhabitants of the planet.

This time we get possessed self-mutilating creatures that are full of rage. It wasn’t like John was a novice in the sci-fi horror genre but this one did come off stuck in the middle of trying to be a modern horror and mixing elements of his classics. This film is better than some Mars based films but not all.

8. The Ward (2010)

Amber Heard stars in the lead role as a girl who gets sent to a mental institute. In the institute she meets other girl with other issues but soon she gets haunted by a ghost and with her new friends sets out to figure out what who and what had happened to the ghost.

This was John’s last directed film to date and he gets the new modern horror down to a tee, following the tradition of having a ghost haunting a heroine until she investigates and discovers the truth on how they became a ghost. I did like the story I found it to be a clever story with plenty of twists to keep you guessing.

7. Assault On Precinct 13 (1976)

This is John’s second feature film made for $150,000. The story revolves around an abandoning Police Precinct where the last shift for one group of Police officers turns into a nightmare as they are stalked by a mass number of street criminals.

In this film you get to see how John has an ability to create brilliant edge of your seat scenes, as well as proving you don’t need to spend big money on a film and hire big name stars like the remake of this did. This is one of four films on this list that have had a remake released.

6. Escape From LA (1996)

Kurt Russell returns as Snake and this time he has to go to the autonomous island of Los Angeles filled with the undesirables. His mission this time is to retrieve a doomsday device.

The only sequel on this list as well as being the only sequel of his career. After Escape From New York being such a hit with the fans it was good to see John himself be the guy to give one of his films a sequel.

5. The Fog (1980)

Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis & Janet Leigh star in the film about killer fog. Fair enough that doesn’t sound very interesting but when you learn that the fog is filled with ghosts and zombies from a former leper colony hell bent on revenge it becomes a very suspenseful horror.

Fresh of the back of his horror baby Halloween John picks right back up with the suspenseful scenes that will have you guessing who will be picked off next with great build and execution. Another film that got remade terribly losing the point of the original.

4. Masters Of Horror – Cigarette Burns (2006) (TV)

Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon) & Udo Kier star in this Masters of Horror hour long feature. The story follows a bankrupt movie theatre owner who gets hired by an eccentric private collector to track down a cursed horror film that drives anyone who views it to become insane and violent.

This is one of the best chapters in the Master of Horror collection filled with legendary horror directors. We have some very twisted scenes proving that even with a shorter feature you can still pull of suspense as we are left with just glimpses of what is in the film and never seeing all of the details.

3. Halloween (1978)

Donald Pleasence & Jamie Lee Curtis star in what is consider one of the best horror films ever made. The story follows a psychiatrist who has to track down his patient Michael Myers who is trying to track down his sister and won’t stop killing people until he does.

This was the first chapter of the Halloween franchise that took off and even though none of the follow ups have been near this standard. This film is filled with suspense filled scares that have always had people try and copy but never reach the same levels. Another one of his films that has had a remake and at least with this remake people talk about it being a good take into the modern era of film.

2. Escape From New York (1982)

Kurt Russell stars as Snake Prissken a lone warrior who has to help the government track down the President whose plane has been shot down in maximum security prison of New York City. Snake must rescue him and collect his cargo through the land of undesirables before it is too late.

The introduction of bad ass Snake Prissken was a great idea he stands up there with some of the best bad ass heroes in screen history. Having plenty of memorable scenes with the final escape being one the most this will always be one of the best films of the genre. Rumoured to be getting remade this could become the fifth of the films on the list remade.

1.       The Thing (1982)

Kurt Russell stars in one of the most memorable films of all time. Focusing on a research team in the Antarctic who must go up against a shape shifting creature. In the middle of nowhere in the middle a storm tension rises between the team. We are left to think and guess who will be infected and will survive.

With some of the best shock scenes in film history this is actually a remake and often considered the best remake all of time. It has been remade well had a prequel explaining the opening scene. This is a must watch for all horror fans that will always be remembered. The special effects are still outstanding and haven’t dated, proving that proper special effects can still be better than CGI.
