Recap of Resident Evil Episode 7 Parasite

We start back in 2005 here, where Albert Wesker works with his brothers for a strict version of Albert, who gets discovered, wanting to clear up the evidence. That he has been cloning himself. Discovered by Evelyn who wants answers.

Move back to 2022, Albert gets to his dim-witted clone Burt who has been locked up since the discovery. The pair look to catch up before getting interrupted.

Back in 2036, Jade is dealing with the consequences of her actions. Needing to face the reality of what she did that got her friend killed. She is locked up as Umbrella want a meeting. The two sides are clearly waiting to go into conflict. Jade is looking to prepare her own daughter for the dangers that would come for her, begging her to plan for her escape.

In 2022, Albert is being pressed by Evelyn who is determined to get the product out and wants to know why he killed Angel. Billie and Jade try to continue their normal routine, which sees the appearance of Burt in their lives. They can see the difference, but don’t think too much about it. Burt doesn’t know how to keep a secret and tells the girls everything. As Evelyn looks to test the drugs closer to home.

In 2036, Jade has accepted to give herself up to Umbrella, if it means the rest of the ship can be safe. Jade has a meeting with Billie, releasing the specimen she created, attracting every infected from around.

Meanwhile, in 2022, Jade and Billie are taken to Evelyn. Taking them to meet their father, revealing that he needs to inject them with blood every day to keep him maintained.

What to look out for next time?

What is that creature on the ship?

How will Jade and Billie escape in 2036?

What is next for Billie and Jade in 2022?

How Many Albert Weskers are there?

Short Thoughts

Lance Reddick takes an amazing twist on what we have seen from him so far, bringing a comedic streak, which will make you laugh out loud.

When it comes to the two timelines, they both have left the series open for the final. With the infected coming for the Umbrella crew in 2036 and in 2022 the girls need to figure out their future.

We are still waiting for the big breakout in 2022, which is better than being the cliff-hanger hoping to get a new season. Elsewhere, nothing feels as connected as it could be on this side of the story.

Final Thoughts: This is a building episode looking to draw us in for the season finale, which is fine, it has plenty left to answer and the chaos is here. Just not enough is going on in the bigger picture. 2/5

Tagline – Act like you own the place

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Verdict: Astonishing

Story: Parasite starts as we meet the Kim family, all unemployed, with father Ki-taek (Kang Ho), mother Chung-sook (Hye-jin) and adult children, former military service Ki-woo (Woo-sik) and genius computer wizard Ki-jung (So-dam), they take simple jobs like folding pizza boxes, until Ki-woo gets pushed into taking a tutoring job for the Park family, teaching Da-hye (Ji-so) English.

Soon after Ki-woo gets a job for the family, the Park family businessman Dong Ik (Sun-kyun) his wife Yeon-kyo (Yeo-Jeong) fill the roles of their trusted staff with Ki-woo’s family as they get themselves secure well paying jobs, but not everything is as it seems with the house.

Thoughts on Parasite

Characters – Ki-taek Kim is the father of the unemployed family, he has always looked out for his family, while they search for their next meal, once the job opens up for him, he becomes the driver, proving to be a model employee. Ki-woo gets the first job as a tutor for the daughter in the family, he sees this as a chance to get to university, where he makes the plan for the family to get the extra jobs. Ki-jung is the daughter of the family that will become an art therapist for the family, while Chung-sook takes over the house as the maid. This family shows the poverty a family can be experiencing and just how far they would go to try and get out of it. The Park family has businessman Dong-ik who has always been patient with people, letting his wife do the hardest decisions in life, while supporting her always. Yeon-kyo is the wife that deals with the everyday routines in the house, she will do everything she needs to with the people she trusts, even if this does mean she can be taken advantage of.

PerformancesWe have incredible performances from the whole cast here Song Kang-ho in the leading role shines beyond belief in one of the performances of the year. Lee Sun-kyun and Jo Yeo-jeong give us wonderful supporting roles, with Choi Woo-sik, Park So-dam and Jang Hye-jin shining like the rest of the cast which is flawless throughout the film.

StoryThe story here follows a poverty family that luck and con their way into secure jobs for one family, only to see everything spiral out of control in a story that highlights the lines between the rich and poor. This story is one of the most fascinating ones of the year, it does seem like it is going to be a simple enough story, but when everything goes out of control we get to see threads of the story unravel in every directions, see the highlights placed on the rich and poor divide, slowly chipping away at the poorer side of the family, as well as having the other incident going on (which does include too bigger spoilers). Much like ‘Shoplifters’ we see just how hopeless people can feel when they have no realistic future because money they can’t earn can’t give them an out. This is a perfect highlight of how to bring an original story to life, where the audience will be left to ponder what will happen next.

ComedyThe film is set up like a comedy which at times does work, with just how crazy certain moments are, though it doesn’t fall into a laugh out loud comedy.

SettingsThe film uses the settings excellently, with the poverty sized house the family can barely not have some drunk piss on the window, to the wealthy businessman who has earnt his way to the top, the difference in lifestyle is drastic with the locations almost being a character of their own.

Scene of the Movie – Party time.

That Moment That Annoyed Me – Nothing.

Final Thoughts This is one of the most amazing films you will see this year, it will shock you and give us an important message about the clash system in the world.

Overall: Essential Movie.

Fantasy Film Casting – Parasite – American Version

Parasite is one of the best movies of 2019, the South Korean masterpiece is hotly tipped to win a lot of awards this year, it has its own message about the poverty line compared to the wealthy and the desperate action people would go to for a new life.

This will be looking to create an American version of Parasite, we are going to go with a cast that will show the different class lines in America between the families, this would end up showing a slightly different complete message, with the different culture involved between the two countries, but I won’t be going with any political messages in my selection, my other rule is simple, I want to keep the acting choices fresh, so will try and pick selection that haven’t worked together. This is also just for fun, I don’t want to see this movie remade by the American studios.

Kim family

Ki-taek (The Father) Kang-ho Song to John C Reilly The Father has always been trying to find a quick job to help his family, he will always learn to adapt to any situation that gets offered to him, he gets a job as a driver who is always about to snap, while his new boss can give insults, when he doesn’t know he is listening. John C Reilly is an actor that knows how to make his characters stir on insults, lets them ride and slowly sink in, not always having the thick skin he shows on the outside, which is what this character would need.

Ki-woo (The Son) Woo-sik Choi to Timothee Chalamet The Son of this family is the member of the family that could easily have the brightest future, he needs the chance for college though, which after faking a couple of documents, meant he could become the tutor, he is in the middle of wanting to be part of his family or escaping to a future that wouldn’t see him struggling. This character needs to be someone that comes off like a nice guy, one that is smart and one that girls would like to be around, if this doesn’t describe Timothee perfectly, then I don’t know who else could do this role.

Ki-jung (The Daughter) So-dam Park to Hailee Steinfeld The Daughter in the family is a tech smart character, she will use her knowledge to make sure the family can get any connections, make any fake paperwork to get a chance at a job and takes the role of child psychologist who helps the youngest member of the Park family deal with his nightmares. Hailee has always been able to bring a confidence to her performances, one that would be needed for this role and something that she would be entertaining in with her one-liners.

Chung-sook (The Mother) Hye-jin Jang to Melissa McBride The Mother is the quietest member of the family, she ends up replacing the housekeeper, needing to just be in the background of the Park’s family life. The one thing Melissa McBride has made a household name with her acting is in the Walking Dead, a quiet on the outside, warrior on the inside figure, which is how a lot of the Mother’s character unfolds through the film.

Park family

Dong-ik (The Father) Sun-kyun Lee to Will Smith The Father of the wealth family comes of like a nice guy, he knows he is a workaholic that will support for his family, he loves his family and will often look down on the poorer, though he does this in private, respecting the ones that work hard, like the driver he needs. This character needs confidence, which is the one quality that Will Smith hasn’t managed to lose in his recent years, he needs an edgier role that he hasn’t been able to get for a few years to bring new fresh revival to his career.

Yeon-kyo (The Mother) Yeo-jeong Jo to Lupita Nyong’o The Mother has gotten used to living in the life of luxury, she will get the housekeeper to do all the work around the house, while she shops, she gets us to the help the family receives and can easily be manipulated not being the brightest of the family. Lupita Nyong’o is one of the most talented actresses around and while you could argue, she is too big of a name for the size of the role, it would give her a chance to shine in a pure comedy role.

Da-hye (The Daughter) Ji-so Jung to Amandla Stenberg The Daughter is getting private tuition, while we would change the subject here, she does get a crush on the tutor in Ki-woo and always wants him to come to the family occasion. Amandla has been proving herself with her leading performances in recent years, while some have been struggling in the box office, some have gotten critical success and her performances have always been praised no matter the popularity of the film.

Other characters

Moon-gwang (The Housekeeper) Jeong-eun Lee to Octavia Spencer The Housekeeper has always been there for the Park family, she knows how to have everything prepared for the family and never gets in their way. Octavia Spencer would be perfect for this role, the character that can be important while on screen, while hiding a big secret, which would lead to the bigger more chaotic moments in the film.

Geun-se (The Ghost) Myeong-hoon Park to Barkhad Abdi The Ghost appears from the basement, he has been living under the house for years, in hiding with his wife feeding him whenever they are alone, he owes too much money to be able to live a normal life and isn’t willing to let anybody takeaway the life he has created in the basement, however bleak it looks. Barkhad proved in Captain Phillips that he can make a character with a small figure, show his desperation when it comes to making a living and this is everything we need in this character.

Director – Bong Joon Ho to Jordan Peele If we are going to be making this American, we need to find director that can handle the social messages involved, with two excellent movies in Get Out and Us under his belt, this would be an easy project for Jordan to bring enough of a spin to make it his own work.
