Saipan – Casting News

Saipan, a new film about the events leading up to Ireland’s incendiary 2002 World Cup campaign, will go into production this summer. BAFTA-nominated Cork native Éanna Hardwicke (Lakelands, The Sixth Commandment) will play Ireland football captain Roy Keane, with two-time Oscar nominee Steve Coogan (Philomena, The Reckoning) cast as the Ireland manager Mick McCarthy.

The Saipan incident was a very public spat in May 2002 between the then Republic of Ireland national football team captain Roy Keane and manager Mick McCarthy when the team was preparing in Saipan, Japan for its 2002 FIFA World Cup. It resulted in Keane being sent home from the squad. The incident divided public opinion in Ireland and rumbles on to this day.

Award Winning filmmakers Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn (Good Vibrations, Ordinary Love) are set to direct from an original script by Paul Fraser (Heartlands, A Room For Romeo Brass).

Wildcard and Vertigo Releasing have acquired UK and Ireland rights on the film, and are scheduling a theatrical release for Summer 2025.

Saipan will be made in association with Screen Ireland and Northern Ireland Screen, with a shoot set for Ireland and Saipan later this summer. Greg Martin is Executive Producer for Screen Ireland, with Ursula Devine Executive Producer for Northern Ireland Screen.

Producers Macdara Kelleher and John Keville said “A million words have been written about what happened on that fateful week in 2002 on the tiny island of Saipan. Next year audiences will finally get to experience first hand the feud between Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy and why it was labelled “the worst preparation for a World Cup campaign ever”. We are so excited to have Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn direct this iconic story with our equally iconic cast.”

Directors Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn said “We’re thrilled to be working with this extraordinary cast and creative team to tell the story of an infamous moment in Irish and football history that drew battle lines across a nation, cast its hopes, dreams and sense of identity into disarray, and briefly made a tiny volcanic island in the Pacific one of the most famous places on earth.”

Distributors Wildcard and Vertigo Releasing said “Vertigo Releasing and Wildcard are delighted to be partnering on Saipan, which is set to be a major theatrical release in UK and Ireland in Summer 2025. The events of Saipan divided a nation, but we are sure everyone will be united in their love for this once in a generation Irish film directed by the brilliant filmmaking team of Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa.”

Saipan is currently scheduled for release in Summer 2025

Get the inside scoop on Theatre Camp: A comedy movie set in a struggling theater camp in upstate New York. Hilarity and chaos ensue!

Director: Molly Gordon, Nick Lieberman

Writer: Noah Galvin, Molly Gordon, Nick Lieberman, Ben Platt (Screenplay)

Cast

Plot: The eccentric staff of a rundown theater camp in upstate New York must band together with the beloved founder’s bro-y son to keep the camp afloat.

Runtime: 1 Hour 32 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Story: Theatre Camp starts when a documentary filmmaking crew sets up to follow a struggling theatre camp. However, the founder ends up in a coma on day one of filming, leaving her son Troy (Tarto) to run the show. Troy is different and leaves the original teachers Amos (Platt), Rebecca-Diane (Gordon), Glenn (Galvin) and others to organise the next show.

The camp must come together for the latest performance. Meanwhile, Troy tries to find the best ways to make money for the camp to keep it afloat. It leads to him going down alternative paths using the campers to help fundraise.

Theatre Camp is a comedy musical mockumentary. It follows a struggling musical camp trying to turn its finances around. However, the founder’s son isn’t prepared for the new responsibility and is unaware of what the camp means to everyone involved.

This movie seems to get caught up in the middle of trying to be an entertaining mockumentary and an oddball comedy musical. Because of this, we end up seeing nearly all the comedy miss despite having a deeper meaning to what the camp means. It shows the chaotic nature of putting together a performance, even if the story feels like is misguided for the most part.

Final Thoughts Theatre Camp is a comedy which misses nearly every attempted laugh.

Runtime: 1 Hour 57 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Story: The Heat starts when uptight FBI agent Ashburn (Bullock) heads to Boston for her latest case. She must work with foul-mouthed local cop Mullins (McCarthy) to learn more about the local area. However, the two clash in styles as they look to take down a ruthless drug lord.

As the two work together, they learn to put their differences apart to get close to the suspect. However, the case becomes more complicated than expected as they discover the truth about the ring of criminals.

The Heat is an action comedy following an uptight FBI agent and a nonsense Boston Cop. They are forced to team up and put aside their differences to track down a ruthless drug lord.

This movie is an entertaining buddy cop movie putting together two different people. Even if a lot of the comedy is overly forced and takes away from the core best parts. If you take away the forced comedy, this would be a welcome addition to the buddy cop movies and the main stories feels like everything you would have expected. Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy work very well together and we could return to see their partnership again.

Wander Darkly is a mystery drama following a couple who find their relationship tested after an accident. It follows them as they try to understand their life and question whether they are still alive. All while jumping through a lifetime of memories they haven’t had yet.

This movie looks to challenge people’s understanding of the world. It looks at how we can doubt ourselves and question a lot of what happens around us. This helps the journey of uncertainty and dealing with trauma become easier to understand. While keeping us guessing as to what might be the truth about the accident. We get strong performances from the two leads in a movie that keeps us wanting to see more.

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Story: The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare starts when the British military recruit Gus March-Phillips (Cavill). They want him to put together a team to take out a German force. Gus recruits Anders (Ritchson), Geoffrey (Pettyfer), Henry (Tiffin) and Freddy (Golding). The team works with Heron (Olusanmokun) and Marjorie (Gonzalez) who have a bigger presence in Nazi-occupied territory.

As the mission unfolds, the team must work with others and deal with problems. It shows them using a host of different methods to get the job done and get the perfect plan complete.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is an action comedy following a select group of British soldiers assigned to take out a German unit. It follows them getting together and completing a mission which gives them plenty of problems.

This movie feels like a more bombastic comedic vision of Inglorious Basterds. It has a heist feeling to the operation, which takes plenty of twists and turns. The action feels big, and the crew feels slick in how they operate. It has a great cast, who embrace their character’s swagger to life. However, it does feel overly British in places, bringing a stuck mentality to everything unfolding. Even if this is based on real people, it can come off to comedic for its own good.

When lives change, the A.I. realities blur with what people once thought they had. It leads to a confusing series of events, which create moments people can’t deal with and struggle to understand.

Wonderland is a sci-fi drama following different people who make a connection to their lost loved ones through A.I. technology. However, when things change, they must figure out how to move on with the changes as the A.I. starts bringing its own ideas to the table.

This movie takes the idea of communicating with lost loved ones and places it into the hands of A.I. It has a mixture of good and bad results, offering moral dilemmas about how to react. This includes, remembering people a certain way, only wanting to remember the positives and ignore they have even gone. It dives into some series subjects. However, it doesn’t seem to get as deep into the reality as possible, almost only grazing the surface of what could have been.

Wonderland is available on Netflix now.

Final Thoughts Wonderland tackles a sensitive subject without going deep enough.
