Was Sphere Overshadowed by Event Horizon?

Sphere – Overshadowed by Event Horizon?

Sphere

On 13th February 1998, Sphere was released by Warner Bros. 25 years later, it is time to look back at the movie and see where it stands in film history. Early 1998 was always going to be difficult for any movie, as every movie got overshadowed by Titanic which constantly shone at the Box Office.

Director

Sphere was directed by Oscar-Winning director Barry Levinson. He had previously won his Oscar for Rain Man, while also getting a nomination for directing Bugsy. After he directed Sphere, he tended to lean more into comedies, never getting to the levels he achieved during the 1980s and early 1990s. The stand-out movie for this era would be The Bay, though he always worked with the biggest names in Hollywood.

Writers

Sphere is based on of a novel by Michael Crichton, the man who wrote Jurassic Park, Westworld and the TV smash hit ER. The 1990s saw plenty of his work being turned into visual media following Jurassic Park’s success, Rising Sun, Disclosure, Congo and The 13th Warrior followed. This proves that he was one of the most popular authors to adapt in the decade.

Writer-director Kurt Wimmer adapted the screenplay in what is one of his first writing credits. He went on to direct Equilibrium and Ultraviolet where he helps created his own form of action fighting known as Gun Kata. The main screenplay writers are Paul Attanasio and Stephen Hauser. Paul is a two-time Oscar-nominated writer, while the pair previously worked together on Disclosure.

Cast
Sphere

Dustin Hoffman is the lead in the movie, and the two-time Oscar Winner (Rain Man and Kramer vs Kramer) teams up with Barry Levinson for the fourth time. The pair had previously worked on Rain Man, Sleepers and Wag the Dog. In the 1990s Dustin Hoffman was in demand by seemingly selective with his roles making him a great choice for the leading role in the movie.

Sharon Stone took the female leading role in the movie. The Oscar-Nominated actress was at the peak of her career in the 1990s following her head-turning performance in Basic Instinct. She went on to other movies, with Casino being one of the biggest movies to her name.

Samuel L Jackson is another actor that was in high demand in the 1990s. having previously appeared in the Michael Crichton adaptation of Jurassic Park. It was Pulp Fiction that made everybody takes Samuel L Jackson seriously and he followed that up with Die Hard: With a Vengeance. Samuel was on his way to the superstar franchise man we know now.

In the supporting roles, we have Peter Coyote a serial supporting star, usually in some form of authority figure. Here, he is the man leading the mission. Scream star Liev Schreiber continued his own series of supporting roles that make a bigger impact in the film. Rounding the supporting cast was musician Queen Latifah in one of her first major movie roles.

Story

The story follows a group of select scientists, a psychologist, astrophysicist, biochemist and mathematician who have been recruited for a discovery in the Pacific Ocean. They must travel 1000 feet below the surface to the ocean floor to understand a structure. The evidence suggests it has been there for nearly 300 years, but once they get closer, not everything seems as clean-cut as before.

Once they enter the structure, they find an object, a perfect sphere just floating, it reflects everything except the crew. With a storm coming on the surface, the crew are left below the surface until it passes over. This sees them being isolated, as more unexplained events around the structure happen. They must work together to solve the problem, as unexplained events are starting to have devastating consequences.

This is a story that has a very interesting concept. The idea of a discovery on the planet that can’t be easily explained is what we have seen elsewhere. However, a lot of these ideas have been done a lot better in the future. Arrival might well be the best version of the idea, as it keeps us wondering about communication. Sadly, despite having an interesting concept, this story ends up going in a mixed direction, never gaining the focus it should have with the source idea.

Box Office

Sphere was made with a budget of $73 Million and only took $50 Million at the Worldwide Box Office. It only opened at number three behind Titanic and the new release The Wedding Singer, which goes down as a big disappointment. Sphere only ended up staying in the top 10 for 4 weeks, which is even more disappointing for a movie with this sized budget.

Critic Response

Sphere is currently sat on 11% on Rotten Tomatoes with only 6 Fresh reviews. Roger Ebert is quoted with ‘The only excellence is in the acting, and even then the screenplay puts the characters through so many U-turns that dramatic momentum is impossible.’ Even the fresh review from Empire Magazine’s Jeff Dawson reads similarly. ‘Decent performances and an abundance of good ideas and effects. But there is definitely a lack of pace to the dramatic tension, and you may find yourself just not caring.’

Metacritic offers a much more balanced response. Even though the movie on receives a score of 35, out of the 21 reviews, 10 are mixed, with the remaining 11 negatives. The New Yorker’s Sarah Kerr gives the most positive score of 60.

Event Horizon Shadow

In August 1997, Event Horizon was released. This movie saw a group searching for an abandoned spacecraft which leads to them having a nightmarish trip. Event Horizon went on to gain a massive cult following. It does feel like any movie around the same era would have struggled to make an impact. The home release of Event Horizon would have been happening around the same time as Sphere’s cinematic release. The fact this movie ends up using a lot more psychological horror over gore. You can see why it never reached the same level.

Verdict on Daughter

Daughter is a mystery drama following a young woman forced into becoming a sister in an estranged family. It sees a man claiming to be the father of the family ordering people in his family around for the greater good.

This is a strange movie, that leads to the audience needing to wait and see what the bigger picture is. It keeps things shimmering along, keeping our attention as we want to see what will happen. Despite this, we don’t get much happening, it is all about waiting. Certain scenes can come off longer than they should, lingering longer than they need to.

Casper Van Dien gives one of his calmer performances than we are used to, one that adds an extra level of disturbance in the movie. Vivien Ngô is excellent to watch too, as she becomes the character in the film learning like we are.

Where to Watch: Daughter will be available to own or rent in the UK & Ireland from 20th Feb via AppleTV, Amazon, Sky Store, Virgin Media and Google Play.

Final ThoughtsDaughter is a disturbing, unsettling mystery simmering with tension.

Scream 3 (2000) Victim List

Scream 3 The Victim List

Scream VI is about to come to the cinema. Meaning one thing, we have a new Ghostface or Ghostfaces. So, before the movie comes out, it is time to look back through the franchise and try to figure out who the killer is in each individual kill in the movie.

We will be doing this one movie at a time, and this will include complete spoilers. Once this is complete, I will be ranking my top 10 favourite Ghostface kills in the franchise.

Scream 3

Scream 3 Poster

Scream 3 has differences from the rest of the movies, for this one I am going to be seeing if Roman could have killed them. That is because he is the only killer in the movie.

Victim – Christine
Scream 3 Christine

Kill – Christine is Cotton’s girlfriend waiting for him at home. She is getting ready for bed when Ghostface arrives in her apartment using Cotton’s voice. Christine believes it is a twisted game that he has been known for, only thing time she finds it more deadly than normal. She doesn’t believe Cotton is whom he claims when he returns home, leading to Ghostface coming up behind her.

Killer – This seems like an easy one to come off with for Roman alone.

Victim – Cotton Weary
Cotton Scream 3

Kill – Cotton is travelling home when he receives a phone call from a mysterious woman. Flirting with the woman, he learns that it is in fact Ghostface who wants to know where Sidney is. refusing to give that information, he rushes home through rush hour traffic to try and save Christine. He ends up getting overpowered and killed off eliminating another one of the originals in the franchise.

Killer – Much like with Christine, he has set this up to get the two quick kills, which could easily be done alone.

Victim – Sarah
Sarah Scream 3

Kill – Sarah is one of the actresses involved in Stab 3, she comes to visit Roman about her death scene in the movie. Seeing herself tired of her career, her phone call with Roman turns sour as she gets attacked by Ghostface. She gets trapped in the office, as she looks for a hiding spot in the wardrobe room, hiding in the middle of the Ghostface costumes. Eventually, she is chased around the office before getting killed.

Killer – Roman is the one who called her into the office, he makes himself seem like a clear suspect in the movie. Ghostface even breaks character by claiming it to be his movie, like Roman did.

Victim – Steven Stone
Steven Scream 3

Kill – Steven Stone is Jennifer’s bodyguard, he doesn’t like anyone else including Dewey. After he receives a phone call from Dewey, it turns out that Ghostface is right behind. Stabbing him in Dewey’s trailer before dying on Jennifer’s doorstep.

Killer – This again could see the director following the cast around, as most of them are together, it eliminates any threat to them.

Victim – Tom Prinze
Tom Scream 3

Kill – Tom is one of the actors in the movie, who is at the house with the rest of the cast. After Steven is killed, the cast starts getting faxes with messages on them. Everybody else leaves, but he wants to know the answer, leading him to return to the home and get blown up in an explosion.

Killer – This one could have been done from a distance, only he doesn’t know how many of the cast he will pick off with the technique.

Victim – Angelina
Angelina Scream 3

Kill – Angelina is playing Sidney in the Stab movie, she is presented as the girl next door who is lucky to get the role. However, it turns out she got herself cast in the movie by sleeping with Roman. She wants to make the most of her time in Hollywood but snaps finding herself alone and killed by Ghostface.

Killer – This is where things get messier as it is clear Roman could have been hiding after faking his death. However, it is very sudden after the incident of finding his body.

Victim – Tyson
Tyson Scream 3

Kill – Tyson is another one of the actors in the movie being produced. He doesn’t seem to have much to do in the movie, with his death coming in the chaos after Angelina’s it becomes clear the killer is working alone here.

Killer – This is a quick after the last one moment, it is clear it is the same killer.

Victim – Jennifer
Jennifer Scream 3

Kill – Jennifer is playing Gail in the movie, she is the highlight of the movie and finds clues. She finds herself in a secret passageway, where she fails to fight off the killer. This is the most gutting kill as she could easily have been a welcome addition to the movie.

Killer – This continues the idea the killer knows his way around the house. Roman would know about the secret passageways and use them to his advantage, also happens straight after the previous two.

Final Kill Count: 9

Killer Roman – This was the first movie that went down the road of having just one killer. Creating two main areas to get the highest kill count to date. By only having one killer it does lose the shock value needed to make the ending more interesting.

When Bill meets Ted, he starts to get closer to the killer who will open up to him unlike anyone else has before. Starting to learn more about what drives him, while learning about the unsolved murders Ted is accused off.

Thoughts on No Man of God

No Man of God is another movie that will dive into the mindset of Ted Bundy. Where we get to see how he was making it through his time in death row. While the FBI look to learn from his dangerous mindset. The conversations between Bill and Ted are fascinating as we get placed into the world where the two could almost be friends. Before the shattering truth about the mindset comes out from Ted. Leaving Bill racing against time to help the final few families learn about the fate of their daughters.

Elijah Wood and Luke Kirby are fantastic in the leading roles. Showing the calm in moments and the uncomfortable rage when the truth is revealed. When it comes to seeing yet another film about Ted Bundy. It will give a more interesting vision, instead of showing his diabolical acts. Showing everyone just how calm his presence was despite what he had done.

Thoughts on The Lost Daughter

The Lost Daughter is a drama that will look at a middle-aged woman looking back on her life and decision she made that still haunts her to this day. All while watching a family on her vacation, that strikes memories. The Lost Daughter will focus on Leda’s life, what it means to be part of this vacation, what made her do the things she did the past.

This story keeps a mystery going on throughout, one that is difficult to understand why the decision was made, while the dangerous family seem to be focused on talking big than being a threat. The performances from Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley are wonderful, with a strong supporting cast to compliment the pair in the different times of life.

Final Thoughts The Lost Daughter is a nice drama about decisions that change our lives.

Jane (2022) Movie Review

Jane – Movie Review

Jane

Writer: Sabrina Jaglom, Rishi Rajani (Screenplay)

Cast

  • Madelaine Petsch (Riverdale)
  • Melissa Leo (Prisoners)
  • Kerri Medders (The Runner)
  • Chloe Bailey (Last Holiday)
  • Nina Bloomgarden (Fatherhood)

Plot: Olivia is a young woman who gets deferred from her dream college and experiences frightening panic attacks. In an attempt to regain some sense of control, she embarks on a social media-fuelled rampage against those that stand in her way.

Runtime: 1 Hour 23 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Story: Jane starts as Olivia (Petsch) has returned to school after her best friend’s suicide. She is back on focusing on her dream college Stanford, however, she finds herself deferred. Olivia reconnects with another one of her friends Izzy (Bailey) as they deal with their college preparations.

When Olivia and Izzy discover a laptop still connected to Jane’s account. They start using it to get what they want moving people who have been blocking their dreams. Olivia starts to become obsessed with using her friend’s profile, using social media to fuel her rampage.

Verdict on Jane

Characters

Olivia lost one of her best friends before her senior year. She is trying to put her life back on track, by attending Stanford. Olivia finds her place deferred and worries about her future. Along with her other best friend, she finds a laptop logged in as their best friend. Olivia being angry at her rejection decides to use the account to get her revenge on the people who got in her way. This sees her starting to question her own sense of reality putting her future at a bigger risk.

Izzy is the other best friend that rebuilds their relationship after what happened. She does get into Stanford and joins Olivia in creating the pranks on the social media page. Izzy is happy to join in the prank side of everything, but once things spiral out of control, she wants nothing to do with it.

In the supporting characters, we get to meet different classmates and teachers that could cause problems for Olivia. Even if some are offering to advise her through the college application process.

Performances

Madelaine Petsch is brilliant in the self-centred leading role in the movie. She shows the young woman that would risk everything to get exactly what she wants in her life. Chloe Bailey as the best friend is great too, even if her character tends to fall into a supportive and concerned best friend. The whole cast is good throughout the film, as we see how the lives unfold.

Story

The story follows an ambitious high school student preparing her college application in the aftermath of her best friend’s suicide. However, when her plan doesn’t come together, she sets out on a dangerous path to get everything she wants.

The best way to describe this movie would be a social media vision of Election. As it follows the same path as one high school student that will do anything to get their demanded future. It doesn’t matter how many people they step over to get there too. There is a social media discussion to be had with the story, however not enough focus is placed on that.

The story gets to place a lot on seeing how social media can ruin lives in an instant. One of the biggest examples is how the student treat one of their teachers. There is a warning about the subject matter, which is important because any movie that tackles the aftermath of suicide is important.

Where to Watch: Jane is available in Digital on the 13th of February.

Final Thoughts Jane is an excellent look at the dangers of social media as a weapon.
