Story: Young Woman and the Sea starts when a young Trudy overcomes a serious illness. Her mother pushes for Trudy (Ridley) and her sister Meg (Cobham-Hervey) to learn to swim. Trudy gets to set records across America and represent America in the 1924 Olympics.
However, she fails to impress due to a lack of time to train. She returns home and looks to accept the life of a woman in the 1920s. However, her inspiration battle sees her challenge the system and look to complete the biggest challenge. She wants to swim the English Channel and become the first woman to achieve that goal.
Verdict on Young Woman and the Sea
Young Woman and the Sea is a sports drama following Trudy Ederle’s attempt to swim the English Channel. It follows her rise to success in swimming despite facing discrimination from the men’s side of the sport. She inspires women who want the same opportunities and look to break down the barriers.
This movie takes on another amazing sporting achievement. It focuses on the first woman to swim the English Channel and shouldn’t be mixed up with ‘Vindication Swim’ which followed the first British woman to achieve this. When you break it down, it does everything the typical sports drama does. It shows the different levels of respect women received in the pursuit of sport. She would have inspired countless other young women. However, it doesn’t seem to show enough of the troubles to get this done and solely focuses on it is an easy to achieve goal. Daisy Ridley is great in the leading role as she continues to step away from the shadow of Star Wars.
