They Live (1988)

logoDirector: John Carpenter

Writer: John Carpenter (Screenplay) Ray Nelson (Short Story Eight O’clock In The Morning)

Starring: Roddy Piper, Keith David, Meg Foster, George Flower, Peter Jason

Plot: When hard working drifter Nada (Piper) walks into town he struggles find work, he walks onto a building site for a job, he meets Frank (David) another man struggling for work. Going for a shelter for the night Nada learns about a revolution in place. When he finds out the truth he starts a one man crusade to stop the alien’s takeover of humans.

Verdict: Classic action sci-fi

Story: What if we are not alone? That is a big question but not as big as what if they are already here? This film looks at the idea that we have already started being taken over but most of us don’t even notice. The small force trying to stop the takeover resembles many of films but it’s the idea that we have been blinded in more than just their involvement but the complete takeover of how our world run with the advertisement similar to how some people see the world today. (9/10)

Actor Review: Roddy Piper – Nada takes the action against the alien invasion. Roddy does great stepping straight from the wrestling ring into the action genre with ease. Star Performance Award, Breakout Performance Award, Iconic Performance Award, Action Star Award, Kick Ass Award (9/10)

Actor Review: Keith David – Frank the reluctant sidekick in the fight against the aliens who takes some convincing but once on board wants to help save his family. Good support performance which he has become somewhat of a perfect cast in his futures roles. (8/10)

Director Review: John Carpenter – The master steps away from full blown suspense and tackles the action sci-fi genre with ease to create a true cult classic. (9/10)

Action: Plenty of action packed into this film. (9/10)

Horror: Skips parts of the horror which could have added more but the situation is pretty scary. (7/10)

Sci-Fi: Brilliant to show how a future could turn out. (9/10)

Special Effects: Great special effects used to create the true identity of the aliens. (9/10)

Believability: The way we are getting brain washed by people with money could be seen as true but the whole alien take over not so. (3/10)

Chances of Tears: No (0/10)

Settings: Good setting to show how far the aliens have managed to take over in such a large city. (8/10)

Suggestion: It is fair to say this is a bit of a cult classic and this was the first time I have seen it. I would say people should watch this as it shows how advertising influences now in life but most of us are to blind to see, which is a big part of the story if you were to take out the aliens. It is fun action packed and enjoyable so I think most people should watch it. (Watch)

Best Part: The Bank scene.

Worst Part: It is starting to date now.

Action Scene Of The Film: Final showdown.

Favourite Quote: Nada ‘I have come here to chew bubble-gum and kick ass, and I’m all out of bubble-gum.’

Oscar Chances: No

Chances of Sequel: It could have a sequel, but it doesn’t need one.

Similar Too: Invasion of the body snatchers.

Overall: A very enjoyable sci-fi action film
