ABC Film Challenge – Sports – S – Spaceman (2016) Movie Review

Director: Brett Rapkin

Writer: Brett Rapkin (Screenplay) Richard Lally, Bill Lee (Book)

Starring: Josh Duhamel, W. Earl Brown, Ernie Hudson, Winter Ave Zoli, Carlos Leal, Stefan Rollins, Sterling K Brown

Plot: Story of former MLB pitcher Bill ‘Spaceman’ Lee following his release by the Montreal Expos.

Runtime: 1 Hour 30 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Verdict: Slow Drama

Story: Spaceman starts as MLB pitcher Bill Spaceman Lee (Duhamel) sees his career disappear after a interview with a drug magazine, he gets axed by his team, with none of the other teams in the league wanting anything to do with him, because of his reputation.

Bill finds himself with one option, joining a senior team across the road from him, where he finds he love for baseball once again, even if it meant he could continue to spiral down a drug hellhole he has created for himself.

Thoughts on Spaceman

Characters – Bill Lee is a pitcher in the MLB, he is one of the best in the game, only his reputation for drug use hits a new low when he appears in High Time Magazine, he loses his job and must find a way to rebuild his career and life, as well as learning about his love for baseball, to get his life back together. We do meet the ex-wife who has got tired of trying to help him get back on his feet and must put their children first, other players from different stages of their careers and coaches that has supported him or want nothing to do with him.

PerformancesJosh Duhamel is the best he has been in a leading role, going well outside of his comfort zone. The rest of the cast are fine without needing to do much through the film.

StoryThe story here follows the late career of Bill Lee as he sees his career taken from him, with him desperately trying to get back into the game despite the reputation he has created for himself. This isn’t the most engaging story, if you don’t follow baseball, you won’t understand how the system works, Bill Lee isn’t the most likable character because of his own reckless decisions. The style the story unfolds is even more disappointing, as it ends up just going in a direction that shows him trying to play for laughs, rather than seeing how he fixes his life all together.

ComedyThe comedy is mostly coming from trying to poke fun at different generations of baseball players, as well as stoner jokes.

SettingsThe film does take us around America as Bill tries to find a new team to play, it isn’t the easiest to figure out everywhere he has been attending.

Scene of the Movie – The rookie can’t handle the pitches.

That Moment That Annoyed Me – Not understand baseball at all.

Final Thoughts This is a disappointing sports comedy that is trying to tell an important story, only to end up feeling forced more than anything else.

Overall: Poor comedy.

ABC Film Challenge – Sports – R – The Racer (2020) Movie Review

Director: Kieron J Walsh

Writer: Ciaran Cassidy, Kieron J Walsh, Sean Cook (Screenplay)

Starring: Louis Talpe, Matteo Simoni, Tara Lee, Iain Glen, Karel Roden, Timo Wagner, Sarah Carroll

Plot: It follows a rider who, after being dropped from the team, is reinstated following a doping error.

Runtime: 1 Hour 35 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Story: The Racer starts as experienced rider Dominique Chabol (Taipe) is preparing for the latest Tour de France starting in Ireland, he is getting through the final preparation in the team with the lead rider Lupo ‘Tartare’ Marino (Simoni) needing him to keep him calm, but the day before the race the team owner Viking (Roden) drops him from the formation.

With Dom facing the reality of his career in the sport being over, he finds himself getting redemption after a member of the team gets ill and Dom gets reinstated, only of the team to need to deal with a bigger problem, an investigation into what is giving them an advantage.

Thoughts on The Racer

Characters & Performances – Dominique Chabol is the veteran member of the team, he has been competing for 25-years, he is the anchor of the team, keeping the other riders grounded, prepared for what is next, only to find himself getting axed from the team last minute, starting to question what to do next. He has never held the Yellow Jersey, the one dream he never achieved and after getting one more chance on the team, he starts to show he desire to achieve more, while staying the team player. Louis Talpe is great in this role, showing us the pure emotion of someone who wanted more from his career, while also being proud of what he has achieved so far. Lupe ‘Tartare’ Marino is the leader rider, the guy who is meant to win the yellow jersey, he is a cocky arrogant hot head that needs Dom to help keep him calm before the races, he celebrates big when they win and rages when they don’t. Matteo Simoni shows us how you would expect more athletes to act when they don’t succeed. Dr Lynn Brennan is the local work placement doctor working with the tour, she helps Dom with his own problems, offering him more of a friendship that he was expecting, helping him put his own vision of life in perspective. Tara Lee is great in her role, being the stronger figure in a world where Dom has let people use him for years. Sonny is the oldest friend Dom has in this world, the masseur who also helps the riders with other ideas to stay up to the standard within the team. Iain Glen brings most of the comedy to this role, with his lard back motivation to everything going on.

StoryThe story here follows a veteran cyclist who has spent his career as part of a team but never been the lead rider within it, that starts to question his own future when the owner drops him, only to bring him back after an illness within the team. This will show us how veteran sports stars can be treated by teams after years of time given, how they can become the leader of the team, without needing to be the most important member to the spectators and how a career will leave someone always wanting more. This does show us just how the tour de France was filled with people that were trying to bend the rules to their own advantage in the late 90s, in a way that was both dangerous to the athlete and the reputation of the team. This is told in a way that shows us how the veteran can start to see the bigger picture to everything going on and will offer help to the team when they need it. It might well give us all of the drama behind the scenes, but for a film about cycling, we don’t get too much of the actual racing, which could have been played for a more intense finish.

ThemesThe Racer is a sports drama showing us the extreme measures riders would go to be the best in the Tour de France, while showing us snippets of the early stages within the stages, most of the cycling is only the final stretch, which is meant to be the most interesting part of the stage.

The Racer is a life defining moment for a veteran sports star in his final years to shine, that is performed excellently throughout.

StoryThe story here follows a science teacher and baseball coach that goes for a try out for the big time, only to turn heads with the pace of his arm, becoming one of the oldest men to become a rookie in the major league. This is based on the real achievement of the athlete, so we know that we are going to have a happy ending, we are more focused on the ideas of getting to the landmark, dealing with life choices he must face on whether it will be a good or bad idea. It does have a feel-good feeling to everything that is happen, though it does have everything we would expect to see in the film.

Plot: Brother’s Keeper is a true story about the ’09 Abilene High School Football team.

Runtime: 1 Hour 49 Minutes

Story: Under the Stadium Lights starts as we get to meet the different high school football players that are left after a surprise defeat, with Chad Mitchell (Gibson) making it an option for the team to come together to show the problems they are having in their lives, which will bring to light a string of problems that will see the players show their vulnerable side, while the each member of the team will offer a chance to come together for the better.

Thoughts on Under the Stadium Lights

ThoughtsUnder the Stadium Lights is a sports drama that focuses on four high school footballers that need to bounce back after a disastrous result, as well as learning to cope with their person problems when a local preacher gives them a chance to express their feelings of pain they are going through off the field. This is an important look at the struggles people will have in life and will show how people will come together as a community to support each other, with this being based on a real story, it would be interesting to learn just how much of this is real. This is more about the drama of coming together over seeing any of the football involved, even if I wouldn’t understand the game anyway. It does have a religious theme playing into the recover the people must go through.

Final Thoughts Under the Stadium Lights is a religious sports drama that lacks the big impact on the main game changing sequences.

ABC Film Challenge – Sports – J – Critical Thinking (2020) Movie Review

This is under J because of director John Leguizamo.

Director: John Leguizamo

Writer: Dito Montiel (Screenplay)

Starring: John Leguizamo, Rachel Bay Jones, Michael Kenneth Williams, Jorge Lendeborg Jr, Angel Bismark Curiel, Jeffry Batista

Plot: The true story of the Miami Jackson High School chess team which was the first inner city team to win the U.S. National Chess Championship.

Tagline – Chess is the great equalizer

Runtime: 1 Hour 57 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Story: Critical Thinking starts as we meet Mr Martinez (Leguizamo) who runs a chess club for an inner city high school with a mixed diverse group of students, with the four standout players, Sedrick (Tuggles), Ito (Lendeborg Jr), Rodelay (Curiel) and Gil (Hochman), who all have come from a difficult background.

As the team start winning tournaments, it becomes clear the school isn’t going to fund them, leading to Mr Martinez needing to make things happen and the students must make their own decisions on their futures, ones that could see them go in different directions with the law.

Thoughts on Critical Thinking

Characters & Performances – Mr Martinez is the man that has been teaching the classes for years, he gives up his time to try and help them put the differences behind them and will fight to give them as bright of a future as other young people. He will encourage the students to compete in chess, bringing out a team ethic like the haven’t experienced before. John Leguizamo takes the teacher role and director role to make this one of his great performances and pieces of work. We have the students, Sedrick who is from a home with an abusive father, Ito that has fallen into the wrong side of town, falling towards the drug lords of the area. Rodelay and Gil who we don’t learn as much about, if anything about their personal lives, which is one of the weaknesses in the film, only pointing out the struggles of a couple of the main players. The actors all do a great job with their roles through the film.

StoryThe story here follows a teacher that looks to inspire a group of underprivileged students to take up chess, leading them into competition, giving them hope of a better life away from the one they find themselves facing. This story does fall into the category of the films which will see students that most people have given up on, given a chance to prove themselves and learn the life skills they may never have been given a chance to learn. This time it is chess and it shows that this is a sport that can see people from any background competing against each other to prove they are the best, while also teaching them teamwork through an individual sport. We get everything to make this one story we can enjoy, even if we don’t get the full impact of a couple of major developments about the characters.

ThemesCritical Thinking is a drama around playing chess, which will highlight the lesson people can learn from playing the game, but doesn’t always give us the best visual of how the game is playing out. The locations are used to show the homelife the students will be facing, ones that aren’t going to give them an easy future.

Critical Thinking is a great sports drama showing us the importance of giving people hope.

ABC Film Challenge – Sports – F – Friday Night Lights (2004) Movie Review

Director: Peter Berg

Writer: David Aaron Cohen, Peter Berg (Screenplay) Buzz Bissinger (Book)

Starring: Billy Bob Thornton, Lucas Black, Garrett Hedlund, Derek Luke, Jay Hernandez, Lee Jackson

Plot: Based on H.G. Bissinger’s book, which profiled the economically depressed town of Odessa, Texas and their heroic high school football team, The Permian High Panthers.

Tagline – Hope comes alive

Runtime: 1 Hour 58 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Story: Friday Night Lights starts as we head to small Texas town of Odessa, which relies on their football team to keep them happy, the high school football who are ready for the new season with Coach Gary Gaines (Thornton) preparing his team, only for his plan to be shattered when his star player Boobie Miles (Luke) gets seriously injured.

As the other players Mike Winchell (Black), Don Billingsley (Hedlund) and Brian Chavez (Hernandez) look to make their impact, we learn that not all the players are drawn to the game, some are looking to their own futures, which are not getting the attention they need, while others are dealing with other problems in their home lives.

Thoughts on Friday Night Lights

Final Thoughts Fright Night Lights is a movie where you need to understand the obsession with American Football, ho wit can motivate a town to remain strong through the troubles in life, while piling on the pressure that the high school students are facing, this did get spun into a TV series which would get to explore the problems the players are going through because we just don’t get the impact of the injured player who feels like his future is gone, the son living in the abuse of his father and one living under the shadow of his famous. The film doesn’t get the true spotlight on the personal problems, while showing the games in terrible camera angles, which if you don’t understand the sport will leave you wondering what is happening in the game.

ABC Film Challenge – Sports Movies – D – A League of Their Own (1992) Movie Review

A League of Their Own – Outstanding

This is under D because of the star player Dottie Hinson.

Director: Penny Marshall

Writer: Lowell Ganz, Babaloo Mandel (Screenplay) Kim Wilson, Kelly Candaele (Story)

Starring: Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell, Megan Cavanagh, David Strathairn, Garry Marshall, Jon Lovitz, Bill Pullman

Plot: Two sisters join the first female professional baseball league and struggle to help it succeed amidst their own growing rivalry.

Tagline – To achieve the incredible you have to attempt the impossible.

Runtime: 2 Hour 8 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Story: A League of Their Own starts as World War II is raging on the owner of the Major Baseball teams back on the road, turning their attention to making a women’s league, this sees the scouts travelling America to find the best talent, sadly not only the best players, but the best looking.

Dottie Hinson (Davis) and her sister Kit Keller (Petty) are two of the women selected and joined by Mae Mordabito (Madonna), Doris Murphy (O’Donnell), Marla Hooch (Cavanagh) and many more, they end up on the Rockford Peaches, being managed by washed up alcoholic legend Jimmy Dugan (Hanks). While Jimmy has no interesting in taking part, Dottie takes charge to make sure the women make the impact that will keep them in the game they love.

Thoughts on A League of Their Own

Characters & Performances – Dottie Hinson is dairy farmer that is content with her life, with her husband at war, she doesn’t expect want much from her life, in her spare time she plays baseball, which catches the eye of a scout and recruited to join the women’s baseball league. She only agrees to join if her sister can try out and it isn’t long before she becomes the star of the league, taking control of the team and helping the league gain the attention it needs. Geena Davis is brilliant in the leading role, which is going to be said about most of this cast in the film. Kit Keller is the younger sister of Dottie, that has always lived in the shadow of Dottie, she is determined to get out of the hometown with the baseball opportunity being the first and best option for her. Jimmy Dugan is the former legendary player who saw his career taken from him by his alcoholic ways, which got him injured, unable to play or fight in the war, his name could help draw eyes on the league, he doesn’t want anything but the pay day, but soon gets invested in making his team the best, looking to finally battle his own demons. Tom Hanks gives us one of his very few unlikable characters for large parts of the film, while he doesn’t take away the fact that his character is on just as an important arc as the rest. We do get to meet a host of other players, each one with different characteristics to bring humour and reality to the situation of the time the film is taking place.

StoryThe story here follows the creation of the first women’s baseball league to help keep people entertained during World War II, it shows how the women came from around the country to play in a league which wasn’t only about the sport, but about the image, they wanted pretty girls to turn heads and put a positive spin on the world, we follow one team as they overcome the problems to make it to the world series. This story shows how that even over time, the sexism in sport will still stick, to be the best here, you didn’t need to be the best player, but the best looking, which is tragic to see, but it ended up being the building blocks to get the more serious side of the sport of the ground. The story balances the character well for the most part, putting the main focus on the sisters, but the only negative side of this film does come from the fact they made a big point about Marla, first being brilliant both handed, then not being pretty enough for the league, getting her in the league, but not making a big point of anything she achieved in the league.

ThemesA League of Their Own brings us a sports drama that gets plenty of baseball in (even though I still don’t understand the game), with the hits, catches and outs along the way, showing the tactical side of trying to prepare each player for what they are facing, which is balance perfectly with the comedy, mostly from Rosie O’Donnell and Madonna, holding the series side of the film, for the big moment, which captures you attention in fear, when one of the women is going to learn about their death of their husband at war. The Settings are used to show different backgrounds the women come from, the rich owners life of luxury, the crowds coming into the game getting the attention the sport deserved and the most important side, the locker room, where the bonding needed to happen for the players to achieve what they did.

A League of Their Own an amazing sports drama, highlight the efforts of the first Women’s Baseball League and how they defined expectations to build their own legacy.
