Story: Irresistible starts when Democratic strategist Gary Zimmer (Carell) sees him career in tatters after losing the latest Presidential race, with him needing to try and find a new way to make an impact when it comes to the next election. Gary turns to a veteran Jack Hastings (Cooper) in the Midwest who has stood up against Mayor, speaking for the people.
As Gary starts his campaign, his old rival Faith Brewster (Byrne) arrives in town to lead the campaign for Major Braun (Sexton), as the battle between the two becomes the bigger story.
Thoughts on Irresistible
Thoughts – Irresistible is a satirical look at a mayor race that spirals out of control when two strategies continue their person battle in the aftermath of the Presidential campaign. This could have a bigger meaning, but does get caught up too heavily in poking fun at the people who are running campaigns, over the people who are in the spotlight of the campaign. The performances in the film are strong with Carell and Byrne shining in the comical timing. The supporting cast as fun too, with each person getting a moment to shine through the film. If you are outside the US, certain parts of this will come off a mix of comical, even if you don’t get how certain problems in the campaign unfold. This does highlight of much of a divide in the parties of the Demographic and Republican parties in the US.
Final Thoughts – Irresistible is a fun satire at how a political campaign can be run.
