Thoughts on My Left Foot

Characters – Christy Brown was born with cerebral palsy, he was believed to be a bit of a disgrace to the family, only to prove that he was able to make a career out of only being able to use his left foot to paint and write. He defies all expectations he lives as full of a life as anybody else. Mrs Brown is Christy’s mother that always supported him, no matter just how difficult it was to get through each day, she does worry that his fame can cause him difficulties, but sees him smiling is always keep her happy. Dr Cole helps Christy with his disability and shows him just how full of a life he can leave.

PerformancesDaniel Day-Lewis is fantastic showing that he is the generations best actor, he is head and shoulders above the rest of the cast, who don’t do anything wrong in the film either.

StoryThe story here follows the life and struggles to Christy Brown who managed to defy all odds and become one of the greatest artists of all time. If you ever want to see just what can be achieved by somebody that hasn’t always had everything go their way in this case, against all physical problems Christy faces, he manages to make great achievements. We do watch the film through a flashback of his story being told with a new nurse, which does show us just how he saw the world growing up and how he became so popular within the neighbourhood.

Biopic The biopic side of the film is seen through the eyes of Christy and how he believed he was seen in the world, before he was embraced by it.

SettingsThe film does show the small house that Christy was raised in and how close the family and neighbourhood become as he gets older.

Scene of the Movie – The gallery.

That Moment That Annoyed Me – It is only seen through Christy’s point of view.

Final Thoughts This is a brilliantly acted biopic that shows how one man overcame what seemed like impossible odds to become one of the most famous artists in the world.

Overall: Brilliant Biopic.

Judy (2019) Movie Review

Director: Rupert Goold

Writer: Tom Edge (Screenplay) Peter Quilter (Stageplay)

Starring: Renee Zellweger, Rufus Sewell, Jessie Buckley, Michael Gambom, Finn Wittrock, Gaia Weiss, Bella Ramsey

Plot: Legendary performer Judy Garland (Renée Zellweger) arrives in London in the winter of 1968 to perform a series of sold-out concerts.

Tagline – Judy Garland: the legend behind the rainbow.

Runtime: 1 Hour 58 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Verdict: Zellweger Shines

Story: Judy starts in the late 1960’s where screen legend Judy Garland (Zellweger) has been running low on money, struggling to keep a roof over her children’s heads, she must let her ex-husband Sidney Luft (Sewell) look after them, while she travels to London, where she has a fan base dying to see her in sell-out concerts.

In London Judy is managed by Rosalyn Wilder (Buckley) who must make sure she makes the shows, Judy is trying to make the money, while experiencing the flashbacks of her time working on the Wizard of Oz, being order into certain diets, being controlled. She does make new friends and learns about her own personal problems.

Thoughts on Judy

Characters – Judy Garland is the screen legend, she has been struggling in the mid-40s with a reputation that claims she is difficult, needing to find a way to have an income, she moves to London for a string of shows, which soon sell out, giving her a chance at recovering her career, only her demons will continue to haunt her. Sidney Luft is the ex-husband that wants to have custody of their children back in America. Rosalyn Wilder is trying to manage Judy on the London, she does what she can, getting the most out of her. Bernard Delfont is financing the concerts, he is left disappointed with Judy, echoing what it was like for her as a child star. Most of the supporting characters don’t get much to do, while we focus a lot more on Judy’s life.

PerformancesRenee Zellweger is fantastic in this leading role, completely controlling the scenes, making us feel every emotion that Judy would go through. Rufus Sewell, Jessie Buckley and Michael Gambon are all strong, though they don’t get much to work with.

StoryThe story here follows Judy Garland’s arrival in London for a set of concerts, hoping to revive her career, only her past demons and reputation come back to haunt her once again. The story might show more of her time on the big stage in London which is all fine, but the tragic side of her story only comes in small flashbacks, these scenes are filled with pain and would have been a lot more interesting to see, just how badly she was treated at a young age by the blossoming Hollywood system. We don’t see much between The Wizard of Oz and 1968 either, which is where her bad reputation comes from, this would have also been nice to see, what caused this reputation, was it fair etc. we just seem to skip a lot, despite how interesting the loneliness Judy is experiencing in London would be.

BiopicWe only get to see a couple of moments from Judy’s life, part of the making of Wizard of Oz and then her 1968 concert tour in London, different stages of her career, different problems in her life.

SettingsThe film has a couple of main settings, the set of Wizard of Oz, the stage in London and the hotel where she was staying in her time in London, they show her strength, her weakness and the place that broke her early in her life.

Scene of the Movie – Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

That Moment That Annoyed Me – Not learning enough about why Judy became difficult to work with.

Final Thoughts This is an interesting biopic, where we get to see a difficult stage of her career, Zellweger is fantastic and elevates this film to new levels.

Overall: Nice Biopic, With Something Missing.

Nico, 1988 (2017) Movie Review

Director: Susanna Nicchiarelli

Writer: Susanna Nicchiarelli (Screenplay)

Starring: Trine Dyrholm, John Gordon Sinclair, Anamaria Marinca, Sandor Funtek, Thomas Trabacchi, Karina Ferandez

Plot: The last year of singer Nico’s life, as she tours and grapples with addiction and personal demons.

Tagline – The last year’s of an inspiration of punk.

Runtime: 1 Hour 33 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Verdict: The Problem with Biopics

Story: Nico, 1988 starts as we see how Christa Paffgen a.k.a Nico (Dyrholm) starts a tour to bring her punk around Europe, starting in Manchester, she is joined by Richard (Sinclair) who is arranging the tour, as she opens up about her life with addiction and personal problems, giving up her son early on.

As Nico’s tour continues, she learns that not everybody remembers her own music, rather than just focusing on the stuff that made her famous, she also wants to get her son back, which isn’t going to be easy because he is suffering the same demons she is.

Thoughts on Nico, 1988

Characters – Christa Paffgen was known as Nico in the music world, she was a German punk star that did create her own sound, which made her standout, she was willing to take chances with her musical decisions. Like most people in music during the 80s Nico did end up getting herself hooked on drugs which sees her relying on them too much, costing her, her son and most of her friends. Richard is a lawyer leading the tour that Nico is on, he does his best to become friends with her and guide her when needed. Ari is the estranged son that has followed in her footsteps with his own drug problems though he is looking for help with them.

PerformancesTrine Dyrholm is fantastic in her role in the film, she does make us understand the mindset of Christa, along with the troubles she has faced in life. Outside of Trine’s performance everybody else is solid enough without doing that much with what they have to do.

StoryThe story here follows the final year of punk ‘icon’ Christa Paffgen or Nico, as she tries to tour for her fans, no matter how much trouble it might cause the countries around Europe and how she must try to face her own demons. One of the bigger problems with the story here, come from the fact I have never heard of this person, I don’t know her music and by the end of this story, you will feel like you have seen the basic story of every single music biopic, there doesn’t seem to be very much if anything to make Nico standout from any other musician that faced the same problems. Having it set out the final tour is a strong point though, because it shows us just how difficult it can be for a musician to entertain their fans, while not having everything they want in their own lives. Elsewhere this just doesn’t seem to connect in the way other biopic stories have in the past.

BiopicThe biopic side of the films show us just where the final tour would be where the star of the music Nico is struggling to get through with her own problems.

SettingsThe film does create the 1980s settings with each country does work for the film, with certain camera shots even adding to the environment.

Scene of the Movie – The camerawork gives the film an 80s style.

That Moment That Annoyed Me – I just didn’t know who Nico was.

Final Thoughts This is a biopic that doesn’t do anything wrong, but it sums up just how difficult it can be to make one, if the person isn’t famous enough.

Overall: Simple Biopic.

ABC Film Challenge – Catch-Up 2019 – W – All is True (2018) Movie Review

This is under W because we are looking at William Shakespeare

Director: Kenneth Branagh

Writer: Ben Elton (Screenplay)

Starring: Kenneth Branagh, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Nonso Anozie, Lolita Chakrabarti, Darryl Clark, Kathryn Wilder, Lydia Wilson

Plot: A look at the final days in the life of renowned playwright William Shakespeare

Tagline – In 1613 William Shakespeare Retired. He Still Had One Last Story To Tell – His Own.

Runtime: 1 Hour 41 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Verdict: Not as Entertaining as it Should be

Story: All is True starts after William Shakespeare (Branagh) has retired from writing plays to spend time with his wife Anne (Dench) and his adult daughters the married Susanna (Wilson) and the spinster Judith (Wilder), while dealing with his own grief of his son’s early death decades earlier.

As William is dealing with his own problems, he must address the problems his daughters might be going through and after a visit from an old friend the Earl of Southampton (McKellen), he starts to realize his own life mistakes.

Thoughts on All is True

Characters – William Shakespeare has retired from the playwriting industry, he moves back home to deal with his own personal problems, the long-time repressed grief of losing his son and the reality his daughters are not living the lives he had wished for them. Anne is the wife of William, she has accepted his life away on the big stage, raising their children, preparing for his return, she is happy to have him around and will always stick up for their daughters. Earl the Southampton is an old friend of William’s whose reputation could slander the name of William’s however much he disrespects the people around him. Judith is the oldest daughter who has never got close to marrying, she doesn’t want to and has lived with the reality that she might not be as loved as her deceased twin brother.

PerformancesKenneth Branagh in the leading role does everything right without hitting the levels we know he could see from him, while Judi Dench is flawless without needing to do much. Ian McKellen likewise is wonderful in his small role, it is Kathryn Wilder and Lydia Wilson that do the most to make names for themselves in this film as the daughters.

StoryThe story here follows the retirement era of William Shakespeare as he tries to put his personal life back together, deal with the problems that he has seen them face to make sure his daughters have the life they deserve, using his words to make any situation seem more important than the last. This is meant to show how William Shakespeare gave up most of his personal life to stay in the limelight of the theatre and that he never knew the truth about what happened to his son’s young death. We do see plenty of the references to how men only saw women as property to pass between them instead of looking for happiness, which William did want to see changed only for not much to have changed in his lifetime. In the end this isn’t the most interesting look at somebody who was a major part of history and you will end up not being as engrossed as this story as most of his work.

BiopicShowing the later years of the great writers life is something new, it is interesting to see just how much could have changed if he wasn’t the famous writer like we know him as.

SettingsThe film is set in William’s hometown of Strafford Upon Avon, where it shows us that behind his success, he wasn’t afraid to stay within a small town.

Scene of the Movie – The truth about Hamlet.

That Moment That Annoyed Me – It just seems slower than it should be.

Final Thoughts This is an interesting, only not engrossing story about the greatest play write of all time, we focus on his life away from the stage, which is the least interesting side of his successful life.

Overall: The Wrong Focus.

ABC Film Challenge – Catch-Up 2019 – U – Unbroken: Path to Redemption (2018) Movie Review

Director: Harold Cronk

Writer: Richard Friedenberg, Ken Hixon (Screenplay) Laura Hillenbrand (Book)

Starring: Samuel Hunt, Merritt Patterson, Bobby Campo, David Sakurai, Vincenzo Amato, Maddalena Ischiale

Plot: The next amazing chapter of Olympian and World War II hero Louis Zamperini’s powerful true story of forgiveness, redemption, and amazing grace.

Tagline – The rest of the unbelievable true story.

Runtime: 1 Hour 38 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Verdict: Poor Sequel

Story: Unbroken: Path to Redemption starts with Louis Zamperini (Hunt) returning to America after his time in the Japanese war camp, his brother Pete (Campo) does what he can to welcome him back to the normal life, while the army want to use him as part of the story to hopefully keep the war bonds coming in.

Louis struggles with PTSD once he returns, turning to drink, being forced into taking time off, where he meets his wife Cynthia (Patterson), but the nightmares of his experience continue to haunt him, while trying to return to the track and return to the Olympics.

Thoughts on Unbroken: Path to Redemption

Characters – Louis Zamperini returns to America as a hero after his time as a prisoner of war under the torturous Watanabe, now he returns home, trying to start a new life, he meets his wife falls in love and has a kid, but over this time he struggles to deal with his nightmares from his time in the camp turning to drink to blank out any of his problems, pushing away any chance of being around his family away. Cynthia is the wife of Louis that meets him and sees the good in him, she gives him countless chances to sort of his life knowing he does need help, trying to push him into finding his help. Pete is the older brother to Louis, he is the only one that can truly challenge him to better himself, even if he does get caught in the middle of the insults from his brother. Watanabe is the person in the nightmares of Louis, the man that ran the camp which tortured him for years during the war.

PerformancesSamuel Hunt taking over the lead role really does struggle to make the impact that was in the first film, with Merritt Patterson doing the same, this cast doesn’t really get going on the levels that made the first film so impactful.

StoryThe story here follows the next chapter of Louis Zamperini’s life after his spell as a prisoner of war, here he must overcome his own demon and nightmares to get the most out of life. While this story does focus on the very real issues of PTSD that millions of soldiers had after the war, we do seem to follow just the normal problems, struggling to adapt back to normal life after the war, turning to drink to find comfort. While this might end up being what really happened to Louis, it does seem to lose what was the most inspirational and interesting side of his battle.

BiopicThe biopic side of the film does show the next chapter of Louis Zamperini’s life that did show the consequences of the first film, though it just isn’t something that is that interesting.

SettingsThe film does use the settings that makes you think you are in the late 1940s America, with how all backdrops and social occasion mix together.

Scene of the Movie – The visit to Japan.

That Moment That Annoyed Me – It is all too generic.

Final Thoughts This is a biopic that does take the incredible survival mission to the next level, only it focuses more on the fixing, rather than the ordeal, which just isn’t very interesting.

Overall: Unnecessary sequel.

Bombshell (2019) Movie Review

Director: Jay Roach

Writer: Charles Randolph (Screenplay)

Starring: Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie, John Lithgow, Allison Janney, Malcolm McDowell, Kate McKinnon, Connie Britton

Plot: A group of women take on Fox News head Roger Ailes and the toxic atmosphere he presided over at the network.

Tagline – Based on a Real Scandal

Runtime: 1 Hour 49 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Verdict: Brilliant, Yet Shocking

Story: Bombshell starts as we meet three different women who work for Fox News, first Megyn Kelly (Theron) who is at the peak of her career, facing battles against Donald Trump, Gretchen Carlson (Kidman) who has seen her big spot slowly slip away, with her high points of her career going away, believing it is because of how Order Ailes (Lithgow) sees her and finally Kayla Pospisil (Robbie) an up and comer in the industry, who is looking to make it big in Fox News.

All three women are telling the story, which takes a dramatic twist when Kayla learns about Roger’s habits, which is only highlight more when Gretchen is fired, leading her to sue for sexual harassment, waiting for the other women in Fox News past and present to bring their own stories to light, to bring down one of the most successful, but disgusting men in the business.

Thoughts on Bombshell

Characters – Megyn Kelly is the lead anchor for Fox News, she is heavily involved with debates involving the Presidential candidates, including Donald Trump, which sees her own life thrown into the spotlight, when he has a Twitter breakdown fighting her. She has had Roger’s support through the battle and after the lawsuit comes out, she is the pivotal person that doesn’t speak out to defend Roger, when everybody was trying to learn the truth. Gretchen Carlson is the older (well in TV world) host that has seen her star power dwindle after complaining about the behaviour of the men in her work, she puts together the idea of a lawsuit, waiting to pull the trigger once she is released. Kayla Pospisil is the younger of the three, she is waiting for her chance to get put on the TV screen, until she is left shocked by the behaviour from her hero, Roger who would make it possible, she is left feeling helpless, as she doesn’t know what to do after her incident. Roger Ailes is the man that runs Fox News, he built the company up from the bottom, he does support his employees, though he does have a certain level of standard, especially from the women in his company. This is how he ends up being left with nothing to defend himself when the scandal about his actions come to life. We do meet plenty of employees that all have different reactions for what happened, lawyers that are calmly trying to get to the truth or at least a settlement and just how the reactions all happen.

PerformancesCharlize Theron is wonderful in the leading role, you could barely recognise her either, but her confidence in the role is important to the story unfolding. Nicole Kidman is wonderful too, in a supporting role, but out of the three leading ladies Margot Robbie steals the show with two of the most memorable scenes of the film, which are both shocking and painful to watch. John Lithgow isn’t getting the praise he deserves for the film, because he brings this character to life with ease.

StoryThe story here follows the sexual harassment lawsuit filed against Roger Ailes the founder and showrunner of Fox News, which is told through the eyes of three different women, in different parts of their careers. Where this story really does shine, comes from seeing how to start with is seems to show Roger is a positive light, with how he is supporting Megyn, with her Donald Trump problems, he does give us hints the Gretchen could have been considered difficult to work with and bitter about losing her headline job and is shows the naivety of Kayla trying to get up the system quickly, all these hints show us just how important it is to see how nobody would talk, because they thought they would have been the only one. Once the floodgates open we do learn the truth, but the idea of showing us how easily sexual harassers could get away with their actions for so long, is interest and important to see. Where the story can sometimes lose momentum, is having so many different victims with their own stories, we don’t get enough time to digest what has happened to them after what has happened.

BiopicWhile certain names have been changed, it is going to take some research to figure out who hasn’t changed, it does show how a victim will trying to spin the story to being their own fault, showing how the real victims didn’t know what to do, in a world left shocked by the truth.

SettingsMost of the film is set in the News Studios, it shows how closely the people worked together, how certain safety plans were point in place to left Roger get away with his intentions and how everybody would hear, see and be involved without even knowing the truth.

Scene of the Movie – Kayla’s late night phone call.

That Moment That Annoyed Me – Slightly too many characters.

Final Thoughts This is an important, brilliantly acted movie that shows just how predatory Roger Ailes was with his staff and how speaking up changed the world.

Overall: Important Movie.

The Two Popes (2019) Movie Review

Director: Fernando Meirelles

Writer: Anthony McCarten (Screenplay)

Starring: Jonathan Pryce, Anthony Hopkins, Juan Minujin, Sidney Cole, Thomas D Williams, Federico Torre

Plot: Behind Vatican walls, the conservative Pope Benedict and the liberal future Pope Francis must find common ground to forge a new path for the Catholic Church.

Runtime: 2 Hours 5 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Verdict: A Pryce & Hopkins Masterclass

Story: The Two Popes starts with the death of Pope John Paul II, the Vatican must elect a new Pope, bring the Cardinals from around the world together to go through the voting system, one the world is waiting to hear the news. Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio (Pryce) and Cardinal Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger (Hopkins) are the favourites to wise to the spot, with Ratzinger becoming Pope Benedict.

Jump forward to 2012, Pope Benedict is involved in a scandal, which sees Jorge return to Rome hoping to be granted his retirement. Pope Benedict refuses his request, as the two clash on their beliefs, with Jorge wanting to see the church move to the future, while Pope Benedict believes the church should never change.

Thoughts on The Two Popes

Characters – Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio is from Argentina, he has always bought the people together, he sees the church needing to not only let the future in, but embrace the changes they could never have considered because of their beliefs, he is one of the two challengers voted for to become the next Pope before stepping away from the votes. Years later, he wants to retire and isn’t getting answers, he confronts the pope, wanting to get answers, until he learns the true reason for their meeting. Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was always meant to replace Pope John Paul II, he wins and becomes Pope Benedict. His reign will see him facing scandal before he decides to make a massive decision, one unheard of in the church. He has always believed in follow everything the church has before, which is why he gets challenged the most. We only meet a younger version of Jorge as we see his journey to rise to Cardinal in Argentina, while anybody else is usually just showing the two around.

PerformancesJonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins give two of the greatest performances of the year, the two legends of the industry shine carrying the film with their performances through the film.

StoryThe story here follows the close election of a new Pope and how the Cardinal who stepped out of the race he never wanted to be in, is the one person that the new Pope can turn to in his time of need to save the church from a scandal which could destroy it. This is one of the most interesting and engrossing stories you will see, it shows a behind the curtain look at how the church operates, with minds that believe in a God, even if they do follow different beliefs with how they can connect to more people. We do get to learn how Jorge was given his chance in the first place, had experiences that Pope Benedict never went through to get to his position. The idea that this is a conversation between two religious men with differences, it shows how people can disagree without needing to turn into an ugly fight for no reason, they can respect their differences.

Biopic/ComedyThe biopic side of the film shows the private conversation between two religious figureheads that went through to make one of the biggest decisions in the church’s history, which is also done in a comedic way, where we get to see the two have a joke along the way.

SettingsThe settings are beautiful from the country house to how the Vatican is recreated to make us believe we are right there with the Popes.

Scene of the Movie – The truth conversation.

That Moment That Annoyed Me – Not hearing the confession.

Final Thoughts This is an acting masterclass from two of the greatest actors Hollywood has seen, it highlights the big change the church would take and how to have a conversation where both sides disagree, but accept the difference of opinions.

Overall: Acting Masterclass.
