Verdict on The Santa Clause

The Santa Clause is a family comedy following an everyday man who gets transformed into Santa. However, when his transformation starts taking a toll on his life, he gets torn between helping the children or saving his relationship with his own son. It ends up with him needing to prove he is changing when nobody else wants to.

We get that in the middle of a broken family, with a child wanting to spend Christmas with both sides of his family. However, the changes haven’t always made that easy for everyone else. The whole transformation into Santa brings laughs and adds to the magic of Christmas.

Eric goes in search of everyone involved in the murder, picking them off violently. Police officer Albrecht (Hudson) starts seeing the murders having a connection and looks to stop them. The two reluctantly work together to help clean up the streets riddled with crime.

Verdict on The Crow

The Crow is a crime thriller following a man that returns from the grave to avenge his fiancée and his own murder. He goes on a rampage to get even with everyone involved, clearing up the streets along the way.

This movie is known for the tragic events surrounding the death of Brandon Lee. When it comes to the story, it does everything you would imagine a comic book revenge movie would. It has the violent death and revenge from Eric. This does also offer something different from the other comic book movies of the time. We could easily get to talk about many parts of this movie and how it is shot beautifully despite having a dark colour to everything.

Final Thoughts The Crow is an excellent dark comic book movie.

Verdict on Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult

Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult is the final instalment of the trilogy. Seeing Frank coming back into action after retirement and getting back into action taking down a dangerous criminal.

In this adventure, we get even more of the same, only it ends up being even less funny than the previous two movies. It follows the same tune and really just doesn’t do anything fresh. Nothing hits this time around and by the end of the film, you will be glad the series is over.

Final ThoughtsNaked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult is a poor finish to a weak franchise.

As Alex Johnson (Unger) discovers evidence of ancient relics, she unwittingly leads Kane to Connor. The two go into a final showdown to see who will control the world for magicians.

Verdict on Highlander 3: The Final Dimension

Highlander 3: The Final Dimension is the third adventure in the Highlander stories. It continues to build on the legacy of the character and his battle between his past and present. He comes up against the deadliest enemy yet an enemy he defeated before who is out for vengeance.

In what is a strange sequel, it dives nicely into the back story of Connor’s adventures. However, there are some completely bonkers sequences with Kane, including a chase which feels completely out of context for the film.

This is one you would sit back and wonder what the hell you just saw. and in a mixed way, because you kind of wants to see the crazy side again, but other sides are not as interesting.

Final ThoughtsHighlander 3: The Final Dimension is a bonkers sequel.

ABC Film Challenge – 1990s Movies – T – True Lies (1994) Movie Review

Director: James Cameron

Writer: James Cameron (Screenplay) Claude Zidi, Simon Michael, Didier Kaminka (Original Screenplay)

Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Arnold, Bill Paxton, Tia Carrere, Art Malik, Eliza Dushku

Plot: A fearless, globe-trotting, terrorist-battling secret agent has his life turned upside down when he discovers his wife might be having an affair with a used-car salesman while terrorists smuggle nuclear war heads into the United States.

Tagline – When he said I do, he never said what he did.

Runtime: 2 Hours 21 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Story: True Lies starts when super fearless secret agent Harry (Schwarzenegger) is hot on the trail of the latest terrorist Aziz (Malik) when he learns his secret life has made his distant from his wife Helen (Curtis) and daughter Dana (Dushku).

When Harry learns that Helen is about to get involved in an affair with a used car salesman Simon (Paxton) pretending to be a super spy, he uses the government resources to spy on her and track down, forgetting about the terrorist threat he must fight against.

Thoughts on True Lies

ThoughtsTrue Lies brings us a fresh approach to the action comedy movie, playing heavily in both, but rarely mixing the two, having the spy start and finish side of the film being everything you would expect from a more serious light hearted action film, while the comedy comes from the marriage side of things for the spy, which is all comedy, with little action. The idea that a spy has been keeping his life a secret for so long. Arnold Schwarzenegger was a perfect choice in the leading role, where he can have all the fun in action role, then look out of place in the family life. Jamie Lee Curtis as the lonely housewife works wonderfully too, with Tom Arnold bringing along most of the comedy in the film. The action involved in the film does get bigger as the film continues, with the final acts of the film involving a host of different incidents including a fighter jet next to a building. This is one of the most entertaining action comedies you will ever see, one that I feel most people will get enjoyment out of.

Final Thoughts True Lies a big entertaining action comedy, filled with all the action and plenty of laughs.

ABC Film Challenge – Favourites – Y – Speed (1994) Movie Review

This is under Y because of the writer’s last name, these are my favourite films and Y is very limited.

Director: Jan de Bont

Writer: Graham Yost (Screenplay)

Starring: Keanu Reeves, Dennis Hopper, Sandra Bullock, Joe Morton, Heff Daniels, Alan Ruck, Glenn Plummer

Plot: A young police officer must prevent a bomb exploding aboard a city bus by keeping its speed above 50 mph.

Tagline – Get ready for rush hour.

Runtime: 1 Hour 56 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Verdict: Brilliant Action Film

Story: Speed starts when hot shot police officer Jack Traven (Reeves) and his partner Harry (Daniels) stop the plans of bomber Howard Payne (Hopper), getting awarded for saving the lives of the hostages, believing Howard died in his explosion.

Howard isn’t finished yet and plants his next bomb, forcing Jack to find the bus her has placed it, where if the bus goes over 50mph is activates the bomb, Jack needs to keep the bus travelling over 50mph to prevent it exploding, with passenger Annie (Bullock) needing to take the wheel for him.

Thoughts on Speed

Characters – Jack is the young police officers that will always look to protect and serve, his latest job is to rescue hostages from a bomb threat, which he uses his quick thinking to stay one step ahead of the terrorist, he tries different ideas to win the battle, or so he thought. Now he must go through the same struggles as before as he has become the target of the terrorist, needing to keep a bus safe from his next target. Howard Payne is the calculated bomber, he wants money and after losing the opening dual with Jack, he has taken it personally this time around. Annie is one of the passengers on the bus, she is on the bus because of losing her licence for speeding, she takes over the driving side of everything usually screaming about what is happening too. Capt McMahon is trying to run the operation from outside the bus, he might well be Jack’s boss, but he lets him make the decision during the operation.

PerformancesKeanu Reeves is brilliant in the lead action role, showing he was always going to become one of the biggest names in this side of film, following up Point Break. Dennis Hopper will always be one of the greatest actors for villains, this is no different, while Sandra Bullock steps up in the heroine role, showing more fight than just another woman in trouble.

StoryThe story here follows a police officer that gets caught in a cat-n-mouse game with a terrorist that plants bombs around the city, with his latest one being placed on a bus that once it goes over 50mph, become active. This story is one of the more simple cat-n-mouse battles between law and criminal, it is pure simple action, we need to keep the bus over 50mph whatever the situation is, showing the officers needing to find a way to keep the bus moving whatever gets in the way, thinking on their feet, the terrorist is also well prepared for what could happen, remaining in control for most of the film. The story just keeps everything simple and this works for the film with ease.

ActionThe action in the film comes from the different problems that Jack must overcome at high speed, along with the explosion.

SettingsJack finds himself trapped on the bus for the most part of this film, here he will not find escape, rescue or disarming the bomb.

Scene of the Movie – Bridge jump.

That Moment That Annoyed Me – Most of Harry’s side story.

Final Thoughts This is one of the best action films of the 90s if not of all time, it keeps everything simple, while not sacrificing the intensity level.

Overall: Fun, Action Packed Movie.
