Thoughts on Mosquito State

Characters & Performances – Richard Boca is the social awkward obsessive data analyst that has helped keep a company above the competition with his own brilliant design, leaving him a chance to have the penthouse overlooking Central Park. He sees his life starting to spiral out of control when he finds a mosquito in his apartment, seeing his design start to fail, he is desperate to fix everything before it is too late, even though the people around him don’t see a problem. Beau Knapp does give us a great performance in the leading role, with him needing to carry most of the film with his character’s slow descent. When it comes to the supporting characters we get to meet a potential love interest in Lena, his rival at work Beau and his boss Edward, each will other a conversation, which will lead to a different decision being made from Richard.

StoryThe story here follows a brilliant, minded data analyst who starts to see his life spiral out of control when his apartment gets tken over by mosquitos that start breeding. This is a film that will let everything shimmer on the surface as we wait to see just what will happen to Richard as he starts to lose control of his life. It will leave us to decide on what is real or not, showing us just how uncertain Richard’s mindset is, with part of it potential not being really, with the pure number of mosquitos appearing in his apartment, against what he sees as a problem in the computer system he helped create. We could have seen more from the supporting characters reactions to what is happening, whether there is more a calmer approach to what is going on or they have just amount of panic they are having.

ThemesMosquito State is a slow burning horror that will see most of the horror coming from what is within Richard’s mind and apartment. The apartment shows us the contained environment the penthouse shows us just how the mosquitos are taking control of Richard. We could have seen more horror and even explain about a nightmare sequence, which seems to go nowhere by the end.

Mosquito State Premiers on Shudder on the 26th of August.

Final Thoughts Mosquito State is a truly slow burning thriller that will leave more in your mind than on the screen.
