Man Of Steel (2013)

logoDirector: Zack Snyder

Writer: David S. Goyer (Screenplay) David S. Goyer, Christopher Nolan (Story) Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster (Characters)

Starring: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane, Russell Crowe, Laurence Fishburne, Kevin Costner

Plot: When Krypton is falling apart Jor-El (Crowe) has one last chance for his people’s future and defies General Zod (Shannon) and sends his son away to a faraway planet, Earth. Fast forward to a lost Clark Kent (Cavill) travelling around trying to find himself and saving people from impossible odds. When General Zod returns from imprisonment, he and his army want Earth and it is up to Clark to save the world.

Verdict: Superhero magic brings back the destruction of old mixed with the drama of new.

Story: With every superhero franchise doing the origin story of their characters it is about time Superman got his and this blends The Dark Knight’s dramatic approach with the Avengers action approach. It mixes together with flashbacks of Clark growing up and he rescues through this process. Add in the crazed bad guy who wants to take over the planet you have one very impressive story. (10/10)

Actor Review: Henry Cavill – Clark Kent through the years up until he has to fight for the destiny he was always meant to have. Henry does a good job stepping into the shoes of many before him and he takes the role to a much more serious way much like many of the new age superheroes. Proof he can be a leading man with strong support cast around him. Action Star Award (9/10)

 cavill

Actor Review: Amy Adams – Lois Lane the love interest of our Clark Kent and a feisty report who uncovers the truth about Clark before the rest of the world knows who he is. We know we will get a good performance from Amy she is miss reliable in the acting world. Great support role. (9/10)

adams

Actor Review: Michael Shannon – Evil General Zod who wants to save his people with the selective process. Shannon is great in this villainous role showing how he could snap at any second but stays calm at the same time. (9/10)

 shannon

Actor Review: Russell Crowe – Clark’s real father who risked it all to help save his our species and becomes a tutor through high tech video messages. Crowe is brilliant mentor figure and demand scene presence whenever he is on it. Scene Stealer Award, Favourite Character Award (9/10)

 crowe

Actor Review: Kevin Costner – Clark’s adopted and human father who tries his hardest to live a normal life but is well aware of the greatness in him. A welcome return to some of Costner best work showing in his glimpses the talent he has. (9/10)

 costner

Director Review: Zack Snyder – Snyder is proven in the comic book adaptation genre and this shows a new level of maturity showing how he could get into Nolan’s league. (9/10)

Action: Some outstanding action sequences with mega destruction. (9/10)

Special Effects: Amazing special effects throughout. (10/10)

Believability: Comic book stuff completely over the top and unrealistic. (0/10)

Chances of Tears: No (0/10)
Oscar Chances
: It could get a nod for some special effects awards.

Chances of Sequel: One in the pipeline

Suggestion: One of the best superhero films in recent years not willing to just be a plain origin story but willing to get for mega destruction compared to some of the more recent superhero levels. All superhero fans will enjoy this but if you are looking for the more laid back superman this will shock you. (Watch)

Best Part: I think the classy goodbye to Jonathan Kent really will be the scene that stays with you.

Worst Part: Could be a bit slow to start.

Kill Of The Film: More for the goodbye Jonathan Kent.

Favourite Quote: Jonathan Kent ‘You just have to decide what kind of man you want to grow up to be, Clark, whoever that man is, he’s going to change the world.’

Similar Too: Avengers Assemble

Overall: Brilliant Superhero Film

Good review Darren. It started off promising as it seemed like it was going to be more emotional and smart than the usual dumb, big and loud superhero blockbuster we usually get. However, it turned into one of them and just almost fully lost me.
