Verdict: The Good, The Bad and The Generic
Story: Extraterrestrial starts by showing a woman running for help Nancy (Perkins) tries getting help before being taken. Cue the opening credits followed by the Police investigating what has happened Sheriff Murphy (Bellows) leads the investigation. Next we meet April (Allen) who is going to her family’s cabin to take photos to sale it. Her boyfriend Kyle (Stroma) decides to bring along a few friends Melanie (Papalia), Seth (Moss) and Lex (Savcic) and make it a weekend. The group gets a warning of strange goings on from Sheriff Murphy but continue to have a party weekend while trying not to worry about their futures. They discover the creepy pot growing neighbour Travis (Ironside) who is also after the truth about flying objects.
The weekend takes a turn for the worst after Kyle’s marriage proposal gets rejected by April, this leaves the guys siding and the girls siding increasing the tension between the group. When something crashes in the woods near our group they decide to investigate only to find a flying saucer and foot prints leading away from the wreckage. After having their first encounter with an alien they end up killing one, then they become trapped fighting for their lives against aliens hell-bent on revenge after the treaty between the aliens and humans in broken, you don’t engage.
Extraterrestrial builds upon a conspiracy theory that we have a deal with a species of aliens where they can take as many people for tests as they like and we get technological advances. This is one of the good points along with the alien creation though familiar works nicely along with the ship. On the negative side we have to deal with very generic characters and also character deaths that make no sense because of how their story is nowhere near complete. The story jumps between subgenres with ease, but as always my pet hate in these horror films is that not all young adults just want drugs all the time. This turns into an enjoyable horror that keeps the shocks coming around each corner but sadly leaves too many plot-holes open. (6/10)
Actor Review
Brittany Allen: April our leading lady who along with her friends goes to the cabin in the woods, she shots one of the aliens causing all the consequences to happen. April also was free to go and begged to be taken even though she didn’t love the guy, well that is what she said and knew nothing about the aliens. Brittany does a solid job with the character. (6/10)
Freddie Stroma: Kyle the boyfriend who wants to get married but after getting shot down he gets moody, then when the aliens turn up it was like nothing happened. Freddie does a solid job. (6/10)
Michael Ironside: Travis our generic crazy person who is actually right, he has his own weed farm and knows what is going on and how to avoid it. Michael does a good job in the supporting role. (7/10)
Gil Bellows: Sheriff Murphy here is the most interesting of the characters, his wife vanished one night and he always wanted to know what happened and by the time he finally get around to seeing what is happening he gets killed. Gil does a good job making the most interesting character out of a supporting one who really needed more screen time. (8/10)
Support Cast: Extraterrestrial supporting cast isn’t the largest and mostly involves the rest of the friends in the cabin each one is rather generic and just makes for an easy target to get rid off.
Director Review: Colin Minihan – Colin does a good directing this horror never letting it become too predictable but not having enough good scares. (7/10)
Horror: Extraterrestrial has good horror elements but not enough get used to create the good jump reaction the situation could have. (6/10)
Sci-Fi: Extraterrestrial creates a world where aliens are real and have a deal with us, it also creates a very good space ship interior. (9/10)
Settings: Extraterrestrial has good horror elements for its settings with isolation and also once we see the ship’s interior we get a well-designed idea. (10/10)
Special Effects: Extraterrestrial has great special effects with the aliens, the ship and kills. (9/10)
Suggestion: Extraterrestrial is one for the horror fans to enjoy, it has plenty to work with and plays around nicely with certain subgenres of horror. (Horror Fans Watch)
Best Part: The idea to build on a real conspiracy.
Worst Part: Sheriff Murphy’s story had a lot more to it and was cut too short.
Lessons Learned: Don’t break interplanetary treaties.
Believability: I have given this a low mark because people do believe in the base storyline. (2/10)
