The 25th Anniversary of I Know What You Did Last Summer

Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of I Know What You Did Last Summer

I Know What You Did Last Summer

On the 17th of October 1997, Columbia Pictures and Mandalay Entertainment released Jim Gillespie’s I Know What You Did Last Summer. Scream screenplay author Kevin Williamson wrote the script for Lois Duncan’s novel. The movie starred Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr and Ryan Phillippe.

Box Office

In 1997, the movie was one of the biggest horror movies, being the 3rd highest domestic grossing horror movie, behind Scream (Even though Scream was originally released later in 1996) and Scream 2, with a domestic gross of $72.5 Million. This made it the USA’s 20th highest-grossing movie of the year.

The Story
I Know What You Did Last Summer

I know What You Did Last Summer four friends Julie James (Hewitt), Helen Shivers (Gellar), Barry Cox (Phillippe) and Ray Bronson (Prinze Jr), who are involved in an accident. This sees a man killed and to save their futures, they decide to dispose of the body.

One year later they return home for the summer having all received a note saying, ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’. The four friends reunite and learn that their lives haven’t gone as planned. This leads to them discussing whether they should come clean about last year or not. Before long, the friends find themselves getting stalked by a mysterious hooded figure, carrying only a fishing hook. They must figure out who the killer is before it is too late.

The story plays out like the typical slasher, by having the group slowly picked off one by one, as they try to figure out who is behind it. It creates suspects along the way, ones that even see the group questioning each other. This does hold back on the blood, which is a way to be different to Scream, while still following the same sort of ideas.

The Legacy of I Know What You Did Last Summer
I Know What You Did Last Summer

In the 25 years since the original was made, there have been two sequels. First was ‘I Still Know What You Did Last Summer’. Which takes the survivors of the original to a tropical island to be hunted down by another killer. The second sequel is the strange one ‘I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer’. This one went straight to Video and brings a fresh batch of characters who covered up a murder. Only this time, it is a fully supernatural outing. In 2021 there was a short-lived television series of the same name, that only lasted one season. This is down to mostly negative reviews and failing to get closer to the original source material.

The Slasher Sub-Genre

The Slasher movie sub-genre was on fire during the late 70s and early 80s. The birth of iconic characters including Michael Myres, Jason Voorhees and Freddy Kruger fuelled the passion. However, we did get a lot of solo slashers that have amassed a cult following. By the end of the 80s, the sub-genre felt reduced to half-assed sequels to once popular movies. They still had fans, but many of them were not on anybody’s favourite list.

1996 changed things, when Scream came along, breathing fresh life into the sub-genre. Along with I Know What You Did Last Summer, other franchises were born. Urban Legend, and Jack Frost both started a new series before the reboots, remakes or sequels flooded the market in the early 2000s. There will always be a place in the horror community for the slasher sub-genre. As the ‘who dun it’ behind the first movie and cheesy style will always make for a fun popcorn flick.

Lois Duncan Vs. The Films

Lois Duncan was an American author who originally wrote ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ in 1973. The book was intended to be a young adult thriller that deals with the consequences of the action. In the films, the book got turned into a slasher movie. This did increase the book sales upon release, but Lois Duncan wasn’t a fan of the movie’s decision to change the tone of her story. The main reason for this was that her own daughter was murdered in a violent way. She wasn’t happy with the violence attached to her story, especially with the fact the case never got solved in her lifetime.

She is quoted in 1997 with ‘A movie loosely based upon my novel, “I Know What You Did Last Summer”, opened in theatres around the country [I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)]. I was ecstatic until I settled into a theatre seat with my box of popcorn and discovered that Hollywood had turned my teenage suspense story into a slasher film. The setting had been changed from the mountains of New Mexico to a fishing village on the East Coast, so an insane fisherman, who wasn’t in my book, could decapitate my characters with an ice hook. The first thing I did after leaving the theatre was phone our daughter Kerry and warn her not to let the grandchildren see it.’

Casting

In the casting stories about the movie. Both Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sarah Michelle Gellar auditioned for each other’s roles in the movie. Jennifer Love Hewitt was in the middle of the Party of Five run. Making the step away from TV for her first major film role.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

Sarah Michelle Gellar has just become a major star on television before the release of the now iconic role of Buffy Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This was also the first major film of her career, which was quickly followed up with Scream 2. Freddie Prinze Jr. would get his first major role in the movie, where he would find love with Sarah Michelle Gellar. With the pair happily married and living a wonderful life together.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

Ryan Phillippe completes the three biggest names in the movie. He had been in a few more movies with the biggest being Crimson Tide. Ryan was recommended by his then-girlfriend Reese Witherspoon for the role of Barry and the rest you would say is history. Ryan would reteam with Sarah Michelle Gellar a couple of years later in the popular Cruel Intentions.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

Outside of our core four actors, we do get some familiar faces. First, Johnny Galecki, who is now most famous for his role as Leonard in The Big Bang Theory. He has stepped right out of the TV world like Jennifer Love Hewitt at the time. His character Max has a crush on Julie because of their long-term friendship, in real life, Johnny and Jennifer had been friends for years too. The biggest name in the movie at the time of release was the late Anne Heche. Who in 1997 alone starred in Donnie Brasco, Wag the Dog and Volcano.

Story: Vesper starts as we dive into a bleak future, one where most of the population has been wiped out. The remaining survivors must use the limited resources to survive. Vesper (Chapman) cares for her sick father Darius (Brake) outside of the settlement run by Darius’ brother Jonas (Marsan).

When a stranger from the Citadel crash lands near Vesper’s home, she takes Camellia (McEwen) in. this gives Vesper the hopes of being accepted into the Citadel, where her knowledge could help restart the population.

Verdict on Vesper

Characters

Vesper is a teenager living in this difficult land, she cares for her sick father. She has connections to the local settlement, ones she uses to help find a solution to the ecological problems the world has. Vesper has been creating new plants that could help society but only in secret, she wants to get to a Citadel to further her research.

Camellia is a survivor of a wreckage discovered by Vesper. She was searching for another Citadel and promises to take Vesper with her. Camellia has another secret that could help Vesper with her research.

Jonas runs the local settlement, with Vesper being his niece. He has battled to keep his people safe for years and makes them do difficult decisions. Jonas gets suspicious of Vesper but his loyalty to his brother stops him from pushing things too far.

Darius is Vesper’s bed-bound father, he communicates through a device when she goes on adventures. He guides her through life, helping her through the challenges she faces.

Performances

Raffiella Chapman is wonderful in the leading role, exploring with brains and fight in her. She shows a caring nature and determination to solve the world’s problems. Eddie Marsan as a villain always works, giving a well-spoken and sinister tone of his voice. Rosy McEwen completes the main cast and shines just as well as the others.

Story

The story follows a teenager in a dystopian world who must protect her father while searching for resources. She has connections with a local settlement but a stranger changes the relationship between everyone.

This is a very good story, it creates an amazing bleak dystopian world without going into the change happening. We see how they survive, and the struggles they face while keeping remnants of improved technology. It creates people that want to drive change to improve the world and the battle they face to achieve this.

This does only feel like the beginning of a much bigger story and while this is entertaining. You can’t help but feel like we could have seen a lot more from a longer formatted idea.

Themes

Vesper creates a bleak dystopian world that is beautiful to see, the fog and misty create such a unique atmosphere. The world feels like it has been lost and unlike ‘Oblivion’ it doesn’t make it feel freshly lost. This is a world you want to return to and believe it could have many more secrets hidden out there.

Where to Watch: Vesper is in cinemas and on-demand on 21 October

Final ThoughtsVesper is a bleak, beautiful dystopian movie with plenty left to explore.

ABC Film Challenge – Horror – P – Perfect Skin (2018) Movie Review

Director: Kevin Chicken

Writer: Kevin Chicken, Dusan Tolmac (Screenplay)

Starring: Richard Brake, Natalia Kostrzewa, Kasia Koleczek, Perry Jaques, Jagoda Kamov, Danny Worthington, Jo Woodcock

Plot: Katia Matuschak, 18, a Romanian ex au pair is now adrift in London. She befriends Bob Reid, a seemingly friendly tattoo artist but Bob is not who he seems to be. His life is spiralling out of control and in his final attempt to fulfil his dream he kidnaps her, intending her to be his muse for his lasting work of art. Her body will be his canvas.

Tagline – Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

Runtime: 1 Hour 50 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Story: Perfect Skin starts when Katia Mutaschek (Kostrzewa) finds herself homeless in London at 18, turning to her friend Lucy (Woodcock) who offers her a place to stay, introducing her to a tattoo artist Bob Reid (Brake) who offers to give Katia her first tattoo.

When Bob sees and believes that Katia has perfect skin, he waits for his chance to take her to create his own masterpiece on her skin, using his own tattoo designs to make the perfect canvas, as Katia starts to transform.

Thoughts on Perfect Skin

Characters & Performances – Bob Reid is a tattooist that has been going through a divorce and has a reputation of being one of the best artists in town, he meets Katia and sees what he could give her for a tattoo on what he sees as her perfect skin. He abducts her to make her his latest project, using her skin to make his perfect canvas. Richard Brake does bring us this disturbingly calm character that will give us a character that believes they are doing right for their vision. Katia is an 18-year-old living in London, needing to turn to friends for a place to stay as she looks for a job, she attracts the attention of Bob, who wants to give her a tattoo and ends up finding herself trapped by him, having her body transformed by Bob. Natalia Kostrzewa does a good job in this role, with her character learning to adapt to the changes she is being forced through. When it comes to the other characters Lucy is the friend that offers Katia a place to stay and is the only one searching for her once she goes missing, with this character flipping between concern for her friend or anger towards her friend.

StoryThe story here follows a young woman that gets abducted by an obsessed tattoo artist who wants to make her skin his perfect canvas, as he slowly starts to transform her into his vision of beauty. This might not be the deepest of stories, as we see each chapter slowly see Katia end up with new tattoos, waiting to see just where the final vision of her will be, we focus more on the relationship between Bob and Katia, as they look to learn from each other, with Katia almost embracing her position, while also wanting to escape this world. The side story of Lucy trying to figure out what happened does seem to get in the way of the main story, as it feels like we could have dived deeper into what is making this obsessive nature come out in Bob. This does have a few pacing problems too, as it could easily have been shorter for what we see happen, as we go through the same thing quite often, without getting the reveal until later in the film.

ThemesPerfect Skin is a horror that shows how someone would look to transform somebody else’s body to make it their perfect vision, holding them hostage in the world they find themselves in. we use the London setting showing us how strange things can be happening in the city without other people knowing what is going on.

Perfect Skin is filled with a disturbing presence without hitting the heights of pure terror, despite the body transformation forced upon the victim.

Beyond the Dream

Director: Chris Hanna

Plot: Two aspiring teachers create a college readiness program to help students in El Paso, TX achieve their college dreams.

Runtime: 1 Hour 35 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Verdict on Beyond the Dream

Beyond the Dream is a documentary that follows two teachers that use their own experiences in the college system to give back to their home town. It shows how they team up to prepare El Paso students for college. Teaching them how to apply and get the attention of the colleges and not be nervous about that change.

This highlights the pressure college applications still pile on high school students. It is the next step in their lives and the decision will decide the next stage of their lives to have a career in the future. Having two people give up their time to make the dreams and aspirations of students come true is also important. This is an important documentary that opens the eyes of a generation that never believed they could achieve as much as they could.

Final Thoughts Beyond the Dream is an inspiring documentary showing the good in people to help others achieve the most in life.

Marisa and Dr Leonardo look to make sure the creature is safe despite the fact it grows quickly. However, the military is searching for the specimen, wanting it to discover how to survive on Venus.

Verdict on 20 Million Miles to Earth

20 Million Miles to Earth is a vintage horror that was using the unknown of space for horror. We get a new creature to Earth and how it will make a major impact on Earth and not be as welcome as the government would like.

This was one of the movies that worked for the era and is one that has continued to be used throughout film today. It does have the balance between science and military, leading to the battle to do the right thing.

The effects in the movie are strong for the time, as we get to see the increasing size of the creature.

Final Thoughts20 Million Miles to Earth is a great vintage creature feature.

The journey takes a turn for the worse, when the plane he is piloting crashes in a storm and Marquis wakes up in the attic of a hoodoo practitioner Eloise (Devine) who is holding him hostage, as he desperately looks to escape.

Thoughts on Spell

ThoughtsSpell is a horror thriller that will see a father needing to fight back against a hoodoo practitioner and her followers, who have captured his family and are looking to use them to grant them more life. This is a horror that is built up with the potential that marquis might have something else wrong with him going into everything that happens, be it his nightmare filled memories of his father, or the stricter behaviour he has towards his son. Once he is captured, it slowly becomes clear what he will need to do to escape, which is more about keeping a few things back about what he has been planning for his escape. The performances in the film are strong with Omari Hardwick in the leading role, while Loretta Devine gives us the unsettling performance in the supporting role.

The Ghastly Love of Johnny X is a fantasy musical that steps outside the box with how everything is brought together. It follows one being as he is sent to Earth to learn a lesson. This brings all the retro vibes of classic America.

The dive into the sci-fi side of the film works very well, the whole Resurrection Suit concept feels original and looks great. It is nice to see an original idea, having an original look that never feels like we have seen it before.

There are some fun musical moments, with great dance routines. The performances in the film help spark the movie along, bringing the entertainment factor needed.

Halloween Ends (2022) Movie Review

Halloween Ends – Movie Review

Halloween Ends

Director: David Gordon Green

Writer: Paul Brad Logan, Chris Bernier, Danny McBride, David Gordon Green (Screenplay)

Cast

  • Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween)
  • Kyle Richards (Curfew)
  • Andi Matichak (Son)
  • Will Patton (Armageddon)
  • Rohan Campbell (Diablo)

Plot: The saga of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode comes to a spine-chilling climax in this final instalment of this trilogy.

Runtime: 1 Hour 51 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Story: Halloween Ends starts four years after the events of the last movie. Laurie (Curtis) lives with Allyson (Matichak) and they both have moved on with their lives. Nobody has seen Michael Myers and whenever a crime happens, the mystery of the incident becomes questioned.

As Allyson looks to start a relationship with an outside in the town Corey (Campbell), bodies start turning up. Has Michael finally returned this year and who is he after now?

Verdict on Halloween Ends

Characters

Laurie is now writing a book about her experiences; she has moved back into the town and finds herself checking on any violent crime. She wants to help Allyson have a fresh life including playing matchmaking. Laurie doesn’t plan for Michael’s return, which seems strange compared to what we have seen from her before.

Allyson has moved on with her life too, she now works as a nurse and spends time remembering her parents. She has accepted life has changed and Michael is gone, starting a new relationship with an outsider in town.

Corey was involved in an accidental death, this has led him to become an outsider in the town. He starts spending time with Allyson but the shadow from his past continues to follow him.

Michael hasn’t been seen since the events of that last night, the town still fears him and questions what happened to him. The question is whether he has returned or why he has been hiding.

Performances

Jamie Lee Curtis has been in this franchise for decades now, seemingly every film has seen a change in what she needs to bring. This might well be the oddest one we have seen from her that has the best parts in the trailer. Andi Matichak does a solid job as the ‘final girl’ trying to move on with her life. Rohan Campbell brings the best performance in the film, with a difficult role to play.

Story

The story follows the aftermath of the Halloween attacks, Michael has vanished and Laurie has moved on with her life. Violent crimes continue to get investigated in fear he has returned but the town has mostly moved on.

This story takes a very different direction, it is going to be one that could easily upset people and does feel very out of place. It does feel like it misses, despite the concept being a good idea. The franchise could have done with a more focused conclusion because the final act of the film, is probably the best part of the story.

It would be fair to say this story will divide the audience and will have plenty of people discussing it by the end of the movie.

Themes

Halloween Ends is the ‘final’ chapter of the Halloween saga, seeing the horror icon return for another outing. The movie doesn’t hold back on the body count, even if it does seem to hold back on the violent nature.

Final Thoughts Halloween Ends will go down as a divisive conclusion to the series.

When they meet the McKinley residents May (Hoveland) and Clete (Doom). They learn about their twisted ways and find themselves targeted by the sadistic family.

Verdict on Ash and Bone

Characters

Cassie is a rebellious daughter that doesn’t want to move across the country. She must deal with this, which sees her befriend a couple of locals and dive into an Urban Legend. Cassie finds herself needing to open up, but her secrets will cause more problems.

Lucas and Sarah are the newlyweds trying to help Cassie start a new life together. There is tension between Sarah and Cassie, which happens in most stepparent relationships. They are both trying to do the best for Cassie even if it is testing their patience.

The McKinley family is an urban legend for the area, they have a reputation for terror. Only they have an even darker series of motivations than the family is prepared for.

Performances

The performances in the movie are strong, where we get the typical Harley Wallen cast. He often uses the same cast and it helps get the best out of the performers throughout the film.

Story

The story follows a family looking to start a fresh life. When they run into a twisted family who decides to target them to become their latest victims. This becomes a battle of survival and building a relationship with a new family.

The story brings us into a world with a twisted family. This can be seen in other films like ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’, only this one doesn’t bring a gimmick weapon to the party. It plays into the idea that you never know which urban legends about a new town to believe and dives into the twisted games. Everything plays out with lots of games from the sadistic family, despite it going through the same routine, one too many times.

Themes

Ash and Bone is a horror thriller that takes a family into a terrifying world where they clash with a sadistic torturous family. It dives into the game heavily, with plenty going on with them, showing the chaos created during the fights.

Final Thoughts Ash and Bone is a tense horror thriller that brings a new sadistic family to the table.
