Brief Synopsis – In a futuristic utopian society where no one can live past their 30th birthday, a peace officer is sent undercover to try and stop a group of rebels who help people escape before their final birthday.

My Take on it – This is a film that I’ve been interested in seeing for quite some time and finally got the opportunity.

The premise works quite well and I liked the way that they present this futuristic utopian society.

The first half of the film which takes place there is quite interesting and intriguing.

Unfortunately, the second half isn’t done as well and parts come across as seeming quite silly because of the way they are presented even if the idea is still quite good.

Michael York does  fine job in the lead role and manages to get us to like his character due to his noble feelings. As his character begins to uncover new discoveries about his world and himself we still feel a strong connection to him and his ideals.

The special effects and technology used in the film are quite adequate for the 70’s, yet they sometimes seem quite humorous when comparing them by today’s standards.

I’m usually not a fan of remakes, but this film has a premise that could be remade for today’s audiences which would allow them to improve the second half of this film and make the entire film more interesting.

Bottom Line – Great premise that works so well during the first half yet falters during the second half. York does a fine job in the title role and we learn so much about him as he also discovers new things about himself along the way.  The special effects and technology of the story are fine for the 70’s yet compared to today’s standards, there is really no comparison.  This is the kind of story that could theoretically be updated for newer audiences and if they find a way to enhance the story of the second half, could be quite interesting to watch. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The “Love Shop” sequence originally ran about 4 minutes, but required re-editing for the film to be granted a PG rating. Other cut scenes include Box making a nude ice sculpture of Logan and Jessica, and several characters visiting the “Hallucimill” shop in Arcade (cut for its depiction of drug use). All of the additional footage and its background music were lost in what is now known as “the great MGM purge”, when studio owner Kirk Kerkorian sold off what he could of the studio’s extensive archives and simply threw out the rest.  (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
