Silver Bullet: A Werewolf, Americana, and the 80’slogo

People in their teens and twenties might find it hard to believe that there were werewolf movies prior to “Twilight.” Probably the most outlandish of which is “An American Werewolf in London.” If you haven’t seen it yet, you should. It’s comedic irony in a horror film like no other film. “Silver Bullet” is another werewolf film that has been lost on a new generation. I was 10 in 1980 and watched whatever I could of Stephen king movies all through the decade. “Silver Bullet” is horror with an Americana feel to it. King created a solid story here that has stood the test of time for me. Watching it 30 years later, I still hid my eyes a few times, remember terrified sleepovers of my youth in front of the tv.

The plot is fairly simple but that works well for the film. A werewolf brings terror down on a smalltown American city. The protagonist is Marty, a paralyzed boy confined to a wheelchair. The other two main characters beside Marty are his sister and uncle. They don’t believe what he is telling them about the horror he sees. Along the way you get smalltown diners, 80’s decorated homes, picnics, and scary legends coming to life before your eyes. All people around my age must remember the motorcycle wheelchair. Yes, that was something to behold! Most all of King’s movies have somewhat of a sing song vibe to them, “The Shining” being an exception. I remember reading “The Stand” and “Firestarter” in high school and there were pages devoted to oldies tunes. King has a talent for making singsong wholesome images terrifying. Silver Bullet follows right along in that style of his.

A character worth noting is Marty’s uncle, played by the indefatigable Gary Busey. He is pure fun to watch on screen. When I see him in movies like this or “the Buddy Holly Story” I can’t help but wonder if the character was written just for him. He has an attitude in real life that shows through in most of his characters. When facing a werewolf, you definitely want Busey with you. In the interest of preventing spoilers I won’t go into too much plot detail. Suffice it to say, “Silver Bullet” is a well-crafted movie adapted from an amazing story by an established and world famous horror writer. It reminds me of the 80’s in its purity and innocence. Even though it is a bit singsong at times with its focus on an American town, it pulls no punches for being a frightening movie including clever effects. Every time I watch it I see something more. The werewolf movie genre may have evolved since the 80’s but we can always travel back and get a glimpse of what it was with “Silver Bullet.”

Halloween Kingathon – Silver Bullet (1985)

Banner-3logoDirector: Daniel Attias

Writer: Stephen King (Screenplay) Stephen King (Novel)

Starring: Gary Busey, Everett McGill, Corey Haim, Megan Follows, Robin Groves, Leon Russom, Terry O’Quinn

Plot: A werewolf terrorizes a small city where lives Marty Coslaw, – a paralytic boy – his uncle and his sister – the narrator of the story.

There may be spoilers the rest of the review

Verdict: Forgotten Werewolf Film

Story: Silver Bullet starts in a small town with narration explaining that we are going to learn about their long nightmare which started on a full moon. Tarker’ Mill is the small town in question where our Jane Coslaw (Follows) live with her family as well a narrates the story. Jane lives with her little handicapped brother Marty (Haim) and there parents Nan (Groves) and Bob (Russom), Jane and Marty have your typical sibling rivalry that is really pushing Jane’s patiences.

The town is under attacked from a werewolf but the residents are still trying to figure out what is going on. Marty looks up to his estranged drunk Uncle Red (Busey) who has been causing problems for years. When the body count continues to grow Marty teams up with sister Jane, Uncle Red and his new wheel chair the Silver Bullet to stop the werewolf terrorizing the town.

Silver Bullet brings us into a classic werewolf tale but most importantly it enters into the idea of the town really not knowing what it is attacking people while we did. I liked how the film flowed with our leading character Marty learning the truth rather than it being a complete battle from start to finish, I also like how it was investigating who the werewolf was as many films don’t touch that subject. I think this is one of the better forgotten werewolf films. (7/10)

Actor Review

Gary Busey: Uncle Red is considered a drunk by his family but is always looked up to by his nephew Marty. When the people of the town start getting picked off he works with Marty to figure out what is going on along with the newly created Silver Bullet. Gary gives a good performance in a role I don’t think many other people could have play this well. (7/10)

Everett McGill: Reverend Lowe is the prim suspect in the werewolf case and ends up involved in a cat and mouse like style against Mary. Everett makes for a good villain creepy throughout. (7/10)

Corey Haim: Marty Coslaw is the handicapped boy who starts questioning what is going on in his town while everyone else is involved in a witch hunt Marty starts investigating the idea of a creature being responsible. Corey does a good job as the determined young boy in a different look for a leading role. (7/10)

Megan Follows: Jane Coslaw is our narrator who is recounting her story about what happened where she has to suffer dealing with her young brother who never gets blamed for anything. She does end up helping her brother investigate who the werewolf was. Megan does a solid job in this role. (6/10)

Support Cast: Silver Bullet has a typical supporting cast with the highlight being the Sheriff played by Terry O’Quinn from Lost fame.

Director Review: Daniel Attias – Daniel gives us a good werewolf film that could be in the league with the very best. (7/10)

Horror: Silver Bullet brings us a good horror element film with the added werewolf story. (8/10)

Mystery: Silver Bullet gives the town the mystery of what is going on while giving us the mystery of who is the werewolf. (8/10)

Thriller: Silver Bullet keeps us guessing on how it will end and has a couple of very suspense filled scene. (8/10)

Settings: Silver Bullet keeps the setting in a small town showing just how close the community is when they have to fight back. (9/10)
Special Effects: Silver Bullet has good special effects for the time showing that transformation scenes are important in the genre. (9/10)

Suggestion: Silver Bullet is one to watch, I think a lot of people might have missed this and could enjoy this. (Watch)

Best Part: The chase scene.

Worst Part: Showing the werewolf too early to the audience.

Action Scene Of The Film: Silver Bullet versus the car.

Believability: No (0/10)

Chances of Tears: No (0/10)

Chances of Sequel: No

Post Credits Scene: No

Oscar Chances: No

Movie Reviews 101 Halloween Midnight Horror – A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1989)

logoDirector: Stephen Hopkins

Writer: Leslie Bohem (Screenplay) John Skipp, Craig Spector, Leslie Bohem (Story) Wes Craven (Characters)

Starring: Robert Englund, Lisa Wilcox, Kelly Jo Minter, Danny Hassel, Erika Anderson, Nicholas Mele

Plot: Alice, having survived the previous installment of the Nightmare series, finds the deadly dreams of Freddy Krueger starting once again. This time, the taunting murderer is striking through the sleeping mind of Alice’s unborn child. His intention is to be “born again” into the real world. The only one who can stop Freddy is his dead mother, but can Alice free her spirit in time to save her own son?

There may be spoilers the rest of the review

Verdict: Running Low on Ideas

Story: A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child starts up bring back our two surviving members of the last movie Alice (Wilcox) and Dan (Hassel) still happily in love. It is in the opening nightmare we see that Alice is still having the nightmares that included Freddy as she and we learn more about his origin story. Alice and her friends Yvonne (Minter), Greta (Anderson) and Mark (Seely) have all graduated High School now. (I do like how easily Alice makes friend because her last lot all got killed by Freddy).friends

Alice gets caught up in the middle of a battle between the ghosts of Freddy Krueger and his mother Amanda Krueger. Alice has to follow the instruction to stop Freddy once more before he takes too many lives. When Alice’s boyfriend is killed by Freddy she learns that she is pregnant and Freddy is using her baby’s dreams to take out her friends.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child tries to continue the Freddy Krueger legacy by bringing yet another idea up to let him return. This time Freddy uses genetics to help him kill the teenagers. We don’t learn how Alice suddenly has a large group of friends after her last group all got killed and the new group all have horrendously generic traits. I will say this is easily the most confusing of all of the Elm Street films because you have to find it hard to believe that these kids will fall asleep in the situation they do including a dinner table, driving or Jacuzzi. On the positive it was cleaver trying to continue building the origin of Freddy but let’s face it, it was designed to try and extend and dying franchise. (5/10)

Actor Review

Robert Englund: Freddy Krueger who has found another way back from the dead through the children’s of Elm Streets dreams. He continues to fall into the comical villain with his one liners on the kills. Robert does continue what he will always be remembered for but it isn’t his best outing. (6/10)

 freddy

Lisa Wilcox: Alice is the returning heroine who has got sucked into the fighting Freddy once more only this time she learns about how Freddy became who he is, she also has the ability to shut her eyes and enter dreams now. Lisa does a good job continuing to be the leading lady after number four. (7/10)

Support Cast: A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child has a supporting cast that are all used to become the latest victims to Freddy once he finds his way back to the real world.

Director Review: Stephen Hopkins – Stephen does a good job considering the time restriction he has on this film, it won’t go down as a classic but it will be remembered when people study putting together a solid film in very limited time. (6/10)

Horror: A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child really does lose even more of its scare factor this time out. (4/10)

Thriller: A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child does make you wonder what will happen in the Alice versus Freddy story as it seems to go a different direction that previous haunting by Freddy. (7/10)

Settings: A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child uses generic horror settings to make the kills look like the life the characters might one day have. (7/10)
Special Effects
: A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child falls on the special effects but still has better than CGI ones. (6/10)

Suggestion: A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child is one for the franchise fans to continue watching but don’t start here. (Franchise Fans Watch)

Best Part: Trying to do something different with the franchise.

Worst Part: Confusing when it comes to working out who is asleep.

Believability: No (0/10)

Chances of Tears: No (0/10)

Chances of Sequel: 5th of the Franchise

Post Credits Scene: No

Oscar Chances: No

Box Office: $22 Million

Budget: $8 Million

Runtime: 1 Hour 29 Minutes

Tagline: Freddy has a son

Trivia: Hopkins was given just four weeks to shoot and a further four weeks to edit the film. This meant that he had to shoot on one stage while the crew dressed the other, so they could shot almost continually. After he made it, the studio was so impressed that he was given the task of directing Predator 2.

Overall: Freddy is back for another payday with a side of killing kids

Verdict: Truly Touching Film

Story: Hearts in Atlantis starts an adult Bobby Garfield (Morse) receiving news of a childhood friends death John Sullivan in military service. The bad news continues as Bobby finds out that the other member of the three friends Carol has also died, leaving him to take a trip down memory lane.

Ted offers Bobby a chance to earn some money by simply reading the newspapers and keeping an eye out for people who are to get him as he knows everyone in town. As the mystery about Ted grows Bobby gets a chance to grow up in a way he never thought it could.friends

Hearts in Atlantis is a drama that brings us the coming of age tale in a subtle manor, it shows how looking back on childhood will be amazing because things will have changed. It also puts us in a position of wondering just whether to believe Ted’s story as we learn about his abilities as it also plays into the ideas of government ideas. Somehow without being the most amazing story this film always gets me with its simple side or just how the little things were important in growing up. I personal really enjoy this one for all those reasons. (8/10)

Actor Review

Anthony Hopkins: Ted Brautigan is the mysterious stranger who moves into the spare room at the Garfield household. He has the ability to read minds but is on the run from something he doesn’t let us know who is after him. Anthony gives us a good performance where we see him in a stable role. (7/10)ted

Anton Yelchin: Bobby Garfield is the 11 year old boy who lives with his single mother who is happy with the friendship he has with Sully and Carol. When Ted moves in he starts to learn life lessons while working on trying to protect him an unknown enemy. Anton shows that he was going to be a bigger star one day. (7/10)bobby

Hope Davis: Liz Garfield is the mother of Bobby who is always struggling for money but we really see she looks after herself when it comes to money. Hope gives a good dimension to this character. (7/10)

Mika Boorem: Carol Gerber is the first love Bobby, they grew up as youngsters and we follow this period of her life with Bobby as they experience the first chapters of the romantic lives. Mika does a good job showing she was going on to something more. (7/10)

Support Cast: Hearts in Atlantis has the supporting character you would expect to see in a coming of age story as well as the old Bobby played by David Morse.

Director Review: Scott HicksScott brings us a beautifully shot film that will touch you. (7/10)

Drama: Hearts in Atlantis uses the coming of age angle for the drama side of the story. (7/10)

Mystery: Hearts in Atlantis does keep you wondering what Ted really has done or his ability. (9/10)

Movie Reviews 101 Halloween Midnight Horror – A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988)

logoDirector: Renny Harlin

Writer: Brian Helgeland, Jim Wheat, Ken Wheat (Screenplay) William Kotzwinkle, Brian Helgeland (Story) Wes Craven (Characters)

Starring: Robert Englund, Lisa Wilcox, Andras Jones, Rodney Eastman, Tuesday Knight, Ken Sagoes, Brooke Bundy

Plot: Freddy Krueger returns once again to terrorize the dreams of the remaining Dream Warriors, as well as those of a young woman who may know the way to defeat him for good.

There may be spoilers the rest of the review

Verdict: Typical Franchise Sequel

Story: A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master starts with Kristen (Parker) returning to here nightmare looking for Freddy Krueger (Englund). Kristen uses her powers to call the people into her dreams by calling for Joey (Eastman) and Kincaid (Sagoes) her old friends who thought off Freddy last time around.  Kristen has returned to school as if nothing has happened with her new boyfriend Rick (Jones) and his sister Alice (Wilcox) are trying to get on with everyday life again.

Kristen’s worst fears become a reality when Freddy does in fact come back from the bed and takes out here two dream warriors Joey and Kincaid, sending a message to Kristen. Kristen has become the last remaining victim in the revenge of Freddy but now he is free he can start targeting a new set of victims including the Johnson siblings. Alice starts to pick up the traits of all the latest victims which she has to use to help finish off Freddy, before he takes all her friends from her.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master continues the storyline idea where the previous leading lady is only returning to introduce the next lady who needs to fight Freddy. I was disappointed that we saw the demise of the idea of the dream warriors taking on Freddy because I thought that idea was clever, this time we get another twist on that idea where the summoning into dreams only helps fuel Freddy rather than fights him. I am also disappoint that we have no real reasoning for any of the three kids to be released from the hospital acting like nothing ever happened. I do also feel this is the one where Freddy finally started using the one liners we are all used to him saying when it comes to each kill. When you look at this story as a sequel it would be fair to say it is what you would expect not as good but not fully terrible. (6/10)

Actor Review

Robert Englund: Freddy Krueger is our serial killer long thought dead but he returns to haunt Kristen and a new group of teenager’s dreams. This time he starts to crack on the wise cracking jokes before killing his victims. Robert brings the one liners we all know Freddy for in with this film but always looks like a scary threat on screen. (7/10)

 freddy

Tuesday Knight: Kristen Parker is returning to her normal life but never convinced Freddy is gone, she was right when Freddy starts taking out her dream warrior friends she has to save herself, her friends, only to fail because she is the person that brings Freddy into their lives giving Freddy a chance to increase his body count from beyond the grave. Tuesday steps into the role left by Patricia Arquette and you can see she is the back up because she doesn’t reach the same level of intensity need for the horror. (5/10)

Lisa Wilcox: Alice Johnson is Kristen’s best friend and also the sister of her boyfriend. She has moments where she blanks out of reality which will make her a good addition when it comes to fighting Freddy. Alice seems to gain the traits of her friends who get picked off by Freddy as he uses her to collect his latest victims. Lisa does a solid job taking over the leading lady role. (6/10)

Support Cast: A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master brings back a couple of old characters only to kill them off early, we also get a group of wait for it generic teenagers who become the latest victims in Freddy’s rampage.

Director Review: Renny Harlin – Renny brings his own approach to the franchise which does slip on the last outing but isn’t as bad as the second one. It tries to build on the Freddy legacy more without giving away the biggest twist yet. (7/10)

Horror: A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master loses a lot of its scare value on this outing because you feel every dream will bring a death and each one if foreshadowed. (4/10)

Thriller: A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master hints heavily at a bring secret but doesn’t give it away, all while you are wondering what order the characters will be getting killed off. (7/10)

Settings: A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master seems to keep the friends all in the same school and town but that seems to be the only iconic series locations we see. (5/10)
Special Effects
: A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master still has great special effects with the kills and the appearance of Freddy. (9/10)

Suggestion: A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master is one to watch if you are a fan of the franchise, it will fit in nicely but as a one off horror it isn’t good enough. (Franchise Fans Watch)

Best Part: The kills are very much over the top and creative.

Worst Part: Losing the dream warriors idea already.

Kill Of The Film: Debbie.

Favourite Quote: Freddy ‘How’s this for a wet dream?’

Believability: No (0/10)

Chances of Tears: No (0/10)

Chances of Sequel: 4th in franchise.

Post Credits Scene: No

Oscar Chances: No

Box Office: $50 Million

Budget: $7 Million

Plot: Three more bone-chilling tales that include a vengeful wooden Native American, a monstrous blob in a lake, and a hitchhiker who wants revenge and will not die.

Verdict: Solid Short Horror Stories

Story Reviews

Old Chief Wood’nhead: This one starts with Ray Spruce, a small town shop owner who has himself a Native American, he along with his wife Martha who wants him to retire because the town has slowly started to become deserted. When the leader of the Native American Ben brings Ray his people’s treasure as a mark of respect to show they will pay their debts back, things take a turn when a group of thugs rob the shop and kill Ray and Martha. Seeing his owners murdered the statue comes to life to get revenge for the deaths of his masters. This is a typical revenge like story that takes a long time to build and is over way too quickly. (5/10)

The Raft: This story finds a group of college students on a trip away drinking and smoking weed, they are heading to this raft in the middle of a lake, what they find in this lake is a mysterious blob that devourers whatever it touches. This is one I do like because it goes straight into the action never being afraid to sacrifice character development as well as being gory as they come. (8/10)

The Hitchhiker: This final story follows a cheating wife who in a desperate race to get back to her home before her husband gets home hits a hitchhiker before driving off. The rest of her journey follows her questioning her morale compass as she decides if she should have stop before the ghost of the hitchhiker starting to haunt her. I like this non stop style along with the gore value being used throughout. (7/10)

Bloody Knuckles (2015)

knucklesDirector: Matt O’Mahoney

Writer: Matt O’Mahoney (Screenplay)

Starring: Adam Boys, Kasey Ryne Mazak, Gabrielle Giraud, Dwayne Bryshun, Steve Thackray, Tim Lok

Plot: Travis is an underground comic book artist with a penchant for the obscene. When one of his comics insults a Chinatown crime boss, the gangster punishes Travis by removing his drawing hand. A daunted Travis retreats into a life of alcoholic misery. That is, until his hand returns from the grave.

There may be spoilers the rest of the review

Verdict: Different Revenge Film

Story: Bloody Knuckles starts with Leonard Fong’s (Mazak) product being banned in America after people start dying from it. We move over to meet Travis (Boys) a comic book author of Vulgarian Invasion who is just trying to get it rolling through reporter Amy (Giraud) who also happens to be covering a story involving the missing product.

When Leonard reads one of Travis comic books he takes instant insult to it and tracks him down cutting of his hand as a warning. When Travis’ life start to fall apart after this incident he gives up his work but his hand comes back to life trying to help him turn his life around by continuing his work, while Amy is investigating Mr Fong.

The hand decides to take revenge on the people who ruined Travis’ life leaving Travis the prime suspect for the ruthless gangsters to come after when they start turning up dead.

Bloody Knuckles brings us a revenge film that could have a comic book feeling about it all, with the idea of a created hero (the hand) and a villain being a gangster. It would be naive not to compare this to Idle Hands as it is the only film I know of that involves a severed hand going on a killing spree but this does take on the concept in a different direction. While I do think this all works really well as a revenge like film I do think it struggles on the horror side of the story. I do think this film has a lot of fun in it though.

Actor Review

Adam Boys: Travis is the comic book creator whose work gets him into trouble when local crime boss takes his hand. Giving up on his dreams he gets driven into returning to his art work and going on a revenge mission with his severed hand against the crime boss. Travis does a good job in this role having to keep a straight face through the scenes with the hand.

Kasey Ryne Mazak: Leonard Fong is the crime boss who sends messages to anyone who gets in his way but comes off as a good man in public light. Kasey does a good job in this villainous role.

Gabrielle Giraud: Amy is the reporter who is covering Travis’ work but also looking into Fong’s enterprise, she has a real April O’Neil vibe about her. Gabrielle does a good job in this role.

Support Cast: Bloody Knuckles has a supporting cast that is henchman all with different traits, we also have the other victims who all help in their own way to drive the motives of our heroes.

Director Review: Matt O’MahoneyMatt does give us a unique idea on a film that which mixes the comic book idea into a horror comedy.

Comedy: Bloody Knuckles has good laughs mostly from the supporting cast throughout.

Horror: Bloody Knuckles has small horror elements but doesn’t end up letting them all come out.

Settings: Bloody Knuckles has very genetic comic book group of settings which works for the idea created in the story.
Special Effects: Bloody Knuckles has good special effects to create the hand movement as well as the effects with the kills.

Suggestion: Bloody Knuckles is one for the horror fans to try as they might enjoy what they see. (Horror Fans Try)

Best Part: Final act.

Plot: Survivors of undead serial killer Freddy Krueger – who stalks his victims in their dreams – learn to take control of their own dreams in order to fight back.

There may be spoilers the rest of the review

Verdict: Building the Legacy

Story: A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors starts with Kristen (Arquette) a creative teenage girl being forced into sleep by her mother, where she ends up entering into a dream world she has never seen before. Kristen meets a little girl that she tries to save while being chased down by Freddy (Englund) before being left in the situation where it looks like she tried to kill herself.

We hear that the teenagers have being committing suicide and with Kristen ending up in a psychiatric hospital where all the kids have sleeping disorders. The hospital staff Doctor Gordon (Wasson) believe to have everything under control but a new member is joining the team none other than Nancy (Langenkamp) (So forget whatever you might have heard in the last film about her) who has been receive high praise for her work with children with sleeping disorders.

As Kristen’s nightmares continue she calls for Nancy giving Nancy a chance to meet back up with her old enemy Freddy Krueger. Nancy learns that Kristen has the ability to call people into her dreams. Nancy has to convince the surviving members of the group to work together to finally take Freddy out for good.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors brings the story back to where we want it to be, we have returning characters in Nancy and her father, which does end up making most of the previous film almost pointless. This feels like the sequel the first film did deserve to have where Nancy has learnt to deal with the Freddy problem and is teaching other people how to fight him. We do get to look deeper into the Freddy origin story which I do know is too extend the story but what we learn does help with his characteristics. Sure this doesn’t live up to the original but it does bring the scares back to the level we are expecting that the second one lost. This will be considered the best sequel in the franchise too. (7/10)

Actor Review

Heather Langenkamp: Nancy Thompson is our returning heroine who has studied dream theory and has come to the hospital where she wants to help the children struggling with the nightmares that Freddy keeps appearing in. bringing Heather was a huge plus for this film because you finally get to see the effects of the first film had on her life. Heather does a good job as the one teaching people about Freddy. (7/10)

 nancy

Robert Englund: Freddy Krueger continues to haunt the children of Elm Street and this time he has become stronger making the children commit suicide, but this time he comes up against an old enemy in Nancy. Robert is showing why we all love the Krueger character with another good performance here. (7/10)

freddy

Patricia Arquette: Kristen Parker is the target Freddy is after who has the ability to call people into her dreams to help fight the treat Freddy brings to her friends. Patricia showed that she was a star in the making that could easily get out of the horror genre with this performance. (7/10)

 kristen

Craig Wasson: Neil Gordon is the doctor who likes to do things by the book but manages to get convinced by Nancy to think outside the box when it comes to treating the children. Craig gives a solid performance as the side solver of the problem. (6/10)

Support Cast: A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors has a supporting cast that includes all the other kids in the hospital dealing with the sleeping disorder some become victims while others help in the fight.

Director Review: Chuck Russell – Chuck does a good job bring the franchise back onto the right path with this good sequel to the classic. (7/10)

Horror: A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors doesn’t reach the same horror levels as the original but does bring the franchise back to the horror we would like to see. (7/10)

Settings: A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors brings the horror of not being able to sleep into the world where we only see doctors trying to solve the problem rather than thinking they are just being troublesome kids. (8/10)

The Crow Week – The Crow: Wicked Prayer (2005)

logoDirector: Lance Mungia

Writer: Lance Mungia, Jeff Most, Sean Hood (Screenplay) James O’ Barr (Comic Book Characters)

Starring: Edward Furlong, David Boreanaz, Tara Reid, Emmanelle Chriqui, Danny Trejo, Dennis Hopper

Plot: On his way to becoming an immortal demon, gangleader Luc Crash (Boreanaz) orchestrates the murder of Jimmy Cuervo (Furlong) and his girlfriend, Lily (Chriqui).

There may be spoilers the rest of the review

Verdict: Poorly Modernised

Story: The Crow Wicked Prayer starts by showing three men Pestilence (Okumoto), War (Chong) and Famine (Ortiz) playing a major part in a miner strike gone wrong which is just a distraction to help Luc Crash (Boreanaz) escape from county jail to continue his satanic cult along with girlfriend Lola (Reid).

Next we meet young lovers Jimmy Cuervo (Furlong) and Lilly (Chriqui) as they plan on running away together after her priest father Harold (Trejo) disapproves of their relationship. When Luc comes after the young lovers for revenge he kills them both in an act of revenge against the Indian tribe the banished them. As the films before have shown us Jimmy will return from the legend of the Crow and kill everyone responsible for his lover and his own death.

The Crow Wicked Prayer brings the Crow up against his deadliest enemy to day with the inclusion of a satanic cult. I did like the idea that the original murder is more personal which is a good change in direction. Now for the negative, the crow looks so weak and comes back way to easily with nothing pushing the return like the previous ideas with a set day. Everything ends up feeling messy building up to the final fight. This film feels different but doesn’t capture the changing ideas. (4/10)

Actor Review

Edward Furlong: Jimmy Cuervo/The Crow is the young lover who gets murdered by a gang only to return to kill everyone responsible for his death. Edward really has struggled to become the adult star his childhood movies had promised us. (4/10)

David Boreanaz: Luc Crash is the leader of the satanic cult that kills Jimmy and his lover in his quest to become immortal while driving his men with the idea that he will become Satan. David over does the villainous role in this one. (5/10)

Tara Reid: Lola Byrne is the spiritual sidekick of Luc Crash who is performing the spells to make his returns as Satan happen, she is twisted and shows this by taking Lillys eyes. Tara Reid enough said. (2/10)

Support Cast: The Crow Wicked Prayer has the trademark villains and supporting roles from Danny Trejo and Dennis Hopper, wow just showing what they will turn up in.

Director Review: Lance Mungia Lance does a not have the best direction style because it ends up feeling lost through the story. (4/10)

Fantasy: The Crow Wicked Prayer does use the legend of the Crow to bring fantasy but counteracts the idea with satanic cults. (5/10)

Settings: The Crow Wicked Prayer uses a different settings with the small town of miners that could lose their jobs for the settings. (8/10)

Suggestion: The Crow Wicked Prayer is one that the fans should watch to finish the series but otherwise it can be missed. (Fans Watch)

Best Part: The idea of the Crow versus Satan.

Worst Part: Ed Furlong doesn’t work as the Crow.

Believability: No (0/10)

Chances of Tears: No (0/10)

Chances of Sequel: Was last one.

Post Credits Scene: No

Oscar Chances: No

Runtime: 1 Hour 39 Minutes

Tagline: Passion..Revenge…Eternity.

Overall: Disappointing final nail in the coffin of the franchise.
