Thoughts on Made of Honour

Characters – Tom is a serial womaniser whose best friend is a woman he never hooked up, he has a friendship with her that transcends any form of physical, but when he learns she is getting married he starts to realize he needs to be with her and will go out of his way to show her how he feels. Hannah is the best friend of Tom, she doesn’t care about his behaviour with how he treats women, an art specialist that falls in love while on a trip to Scotland. She asked Tom to be her maid of honour as she plans for her dream. Colin is the Scotsman that Hannah falls in love with, part of the high society in Scotland that seems like the perfect man at first.

PerformancesPatrick Dempsey was a great choice for the leading role, he has the charm needed for this role. Michelle Monaghan is a good choice for a romantic lead because she always gives us a genuine performance of a real woman. Kevin McKidd makes for a good supporting man that gets the laughs when needed through the film.

StoryThe story here follows two best friends that have never been more than friends getting to a stage of their lives when things take a turn, so When Harry Met Sally. While this does do for the film it can take away moments of needed for the film, we have strange character decisions being made and an overly drastic decision to get married. If you do like your rom coms you will enjoy this one, it follows the rules well, but I didn’t get the sudden change in Tom’s character though.

Comedy/RomanceThe comedy in this film hits for the most part, we get good laughs even if we don’t get a laugh a minute, the romance side of the film shows us just how you could be missing something that is right under your nose.

SettingsThe film gives us the New York setting which is an old favourite for the romantic movies while also have parts of the film in Scotland which show us the different culture the two are in.

Scene of the Movie –
The Highland Games.

That Moment That Annoyed Me How America portrays Scotland.

Final ThoughtsThis is a film that will be enjoyed by the rom com fans out there, they will enjoy what they see through this film.

Overall: Rom com fans to enjoy.

Tagline – Some missions are not a choice.

Verdict: Adrenaline Blast

Story: Mission Impossible: Fallout starts when Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and his team Luther (Rhames) and Benji (Pegg) have a mission gone wrong with plutonium falling into the wrong hands. CIA director Erica Sloan (Bassett) wants it back and her team to do the job, but know Ethan has everything lined up she assigns them her best man August Walker (Cavill) to join the team.

The mission is to retrieve the plutonium which leads them to cross paths with old allies and enemies before they can be used as a weapon that would devastate the Earth.

Thoughts on Mission Impossible – Fallout

Characters – Ethan Hunt is the man, agent the leader of the group, he will go into any situation with a plan, trusting the people behind him, this time his loyalty puts the world in peril and his must prove he can find a way to save the day without comprising his position. August Walker is a CIA agent, a fixer if you like, he will get the job done by shooting first asking questions later, which has led him to clash with Hunt, they have both made mistakes which could have got the job done earlier and now he is the one man you don’t want to fight against. Luther and Benji are the key components to Ethan’s team, they have the know how to get the job done and are two of the only people he will trust. Ilsa Faust returns and this time she crosses paths with Ethan turning up at the same locations on her own mission, still deadly and a figure that you will be on the fence about what side she is fight for. We have our authority figures in Alan Hunley and Erica Sloan who of course are clashing, as well as other figures that would be in the criminal world.

PerformancesTom Cruise, what more can say about this guy, when it comes to action he commits big time and this is no different, the action sequences he puts his body through and even the emotional factors included in this film show just how talented he is, with this easily being one of his best action performances of his career. Henry Cavill, I haven’t always been a fan of because Superman is kind of boring, in this film however, we get to see that this man is a talent, we believe he will kick your ass if you crossed him and the moments of emotionless moments are key to his character. Pegg and Rhames do have great chemistry and the comic relief, while Ferguson returns to keep enough mystery about her character for long enough in the film. Bassett and Baldwin will always make good authority figures and to see Vanessa Kirby fresh from The Crown in a big movie, she is great to watch here.

StoryThe story here follows Ethan on his latest mission, this time we get to see what could happen if the by the book mission goes wrong for his own personal reasons over a traitor in the group like the normal opening. The idea he needs to work with an outside isn’t new, the idea that he could be the traitor in the eyes of the authority isn’t new, but it has been tried and tested. Making this feel like a direct sequel is new though, the previous instalments have always felt like, just another mission, this one references previous stories and that increases the peril even if everything plays out to not completely mock certain aspects, but poke a tiny bit of fun at them.

Action/AdventureThe action, the reason we go to these films, while you do get a glimpse of nearly all the sequences in the trailer, the length and intensity to them isn’t shown there and you will be watching from the edge of your seat just to see where or what Hunt does next. The adventure side of the film does take Ethan across the world to save it before it is too late.

SettingsThe film uses key locations, with have Paris, London and Kashmir, each one offers a different action sequences to take place.

Special EffectsThe effects show us just how committed or crazy Tom Cruise is, while they are prepared stunts everything is practical and looks it in every single scene.

Scene of the Movie –
London chase.

That Moment That Annoyed Me The opening credits give snippets of the action we are about to see.

Final ThoughtsThis is another quality addition to the Mission Impossible franchise, it is going to go down as one of the best usages of practical stunts for years to come and shows how they can still be used to this day.

Overall: Pure rush of an action film.

Verdict: Laugh Out Loud Comedy

Story: The Heartbreak Kid starts as we meet 40-year-old Eddie (Stiller) a single man who has never got near to marrying, with his friends settling down, when he comes out of an ex-girlfriend wedding he is feeling down, but a chance meeting with Lila (Akerman) could change everything in his future.

Being spontaneous and learning that Lila could need to leave for work unless she is married the two get married after just 6 weeks together and head off on their honeymoon in Mexico. The longer the two spend together the bigger secrets that come out and Eddie starts to regret marrying her and it becomes worse when he meets Miranda (Monaghan) while on the honeymoon.

Thoughts on The Heartbreak Kid

Characters – Eddie is a 40-year-old man who has never committed to a relationship with his friends getting married, but when he meets Lila he bites the bullet and gets married only to learn Lila isn’t the woman he thought she was and tries to start hanging out with another woman at the resort. Lila is the beautiful woman that comes into Eddie’s life, to stay in America she gets married, only to show the flaws that Eddie hasn’t seen yet, one that is different to what he wants. Miranda is a woman that Eddie meets at the resort and they just click, but she doesn’t know his secret.

PerformancesBen Stiller gives one of his best performances of his career on the comic level, he fits the character well and gets both the serious and slapstick style down well. Malin Akerman does great and uses her abilities for the comedy that goes against what you would expect. Michelle Monaghan is always a great choice in these roles and fits the role perfectly.

StoryThe story shows us what it is like to be getting to an age where getting married can become important or facing loneliness and warns us about getting married too quickly, leaving you a chance to fall for the person you are meant to be with. This does work for a story as we watch Eddie try to keep his wife happy and start flirting with another woman and the comedy plays into this well.

Comedy/RomanceThe comedy works well in this film we get a range of it from sarcastic to slapstick, the romance works too because it shows what it is like at the age where people would feel the need to settle down.

SettingsMost of the movie is in and around Mexico which looks beautiful throughout the film.

Scene of the Movie –
Everything revealed.

That Moment That Annoyed Me It is long in places.

Final ThoughtsThis is one comedy that I did enjoy, it has good jokes and comic moments, as well as a good romantic story involved.

Overall: Enjoyable comedy throughout.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)

kissDirector: Shane Black

Plot: A murder mystery brings together a private eye, a struggling actress, and a thief masquerading as an actor.

There may be spoilers the rest of the review

Verdict: Good Crime Comedy

Story: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang starts as we meet Harry (Downey Jr) who is once a thief but ends up finding himself hired as an actor in LA. We also meet aspiring actress Harmony (Monaghan) and private eye Gay Perry (Kilmer) who are all at the same party in LA. For the role Harry accidently lands himself he has to spend some time with Gay Perry learning how a private investigator works.

When the two find themselves in the middle of a cover up that ended up having to find out who murdered Harmony’s sister.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a crime comedy that only Shane Black can bring us, we get a unique way of telling the story. we get the almost odd couple having to work together but that is more along the lines of a who dun it which could easily fit in any comedy mystery show. It is the creation of the characters and their interactions which makes for all the laughs throughout the film with the overreaction to things that have happened years before.

Downey Jr and Kilmer are excellent together really getting all of the laughs throughout and Monaghan is great completion to the leading trio. When it comes to the villain side of the story we don’t get very strong characters on this side of the story. this is a fun alternative Christmas comedy mystery film but you will have to be used to the style of Shane Black.

Overall: Enjoy comedy that will only work if you are prepared for the style of comedy being used.

Thoughts on Patriots Day

StoryThis is the story of the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings as we see how the police, FBI and city of Boston come together to search for the terrorists behind the crime. So the story is well known but the details behind everything is truly shot here to near perfection keeping you on edge from the opening sequence to the conclusion at this is over 2 hours long. The story telling process within this film is easily one of the most intense thrilling experiences you will have all year long.

Drama/History/ThrillerThis will always be known as one of the most successful capture of domestic terrorists within America even though we have the tragic loss of life. This is easily one of the most thrilling stories you will see this year because it literally just doesn’t stop.

Characters/PerformanceEach character is based on the real people involved the ones that were victims, the police officers hunting the suspects, the suspects themselves and even the political members involved trying to do the right legal side of the story, it would be unfair to question any of the characters within the film because they are real. The performances are all fantastic fulling portraying the people who were involved in the tragic event.

SettingsThe settings re-create the Boston streets for the events with each looking just like it was everyday scenes, we see the peace before the events and the aftermath of the attack.

Final ThoughtsThis is bar far one of the best thrillers we have had on the modern day true stories and true 2-hour edge of your seat thriller.

Overall: Brilliant thriller that just never lets you take a breath.
