See How They Run (2022) Movie Review

See How They Run – Movie Review

Director: Tom George

Writer: Mark Chappell (Screenplay)

Plot: In the West End of 1950s London, plans for a movie version of a smash-hit play come to an abrupt halt after a pivotal member of the crew is murdered.

Runtime: 1 Hour 38 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Story: See How They Run starts in the aftershow of the Agatha Christe play Mousetrap. Film director Leo Kopernick (Brody) is killed and left on stage for everyone to see. Inspector Stoppard (Rockwell) and Constable Stalker (Ronan) take the names and ask the questions.

As the pair lead their investigation, they must learn about the prime suspects. Film producer John Woolf (Shearsmith), screenwriter Mervyn Cocker-Norris (Oyelowo), theatre owner Petula Spencer (Wilson) and many others. As the investigation takes twists and turns, they must solve the murder before it is too late.

Verdict on See How They Run

Constable Stalker is an over-eager rookie on the force. She jumps into cases with both feet and a positive attitude. Stalker takes notes of everything she sees, as she is desperate to pass her upcoming exams. She does get starstruck around Richard Attenborough, while the investigation continues.

Inspector Stoppard is the lead investigator on the case, he is laid back about solving it while turning to his addictions along the way. He does look to do the right thing and even if his methods are not always the best.

When it comes to the list of suspects, we dive into the cast and crew. Like with many murder mysteries, we get a string of potential suspects, each having their potential motivation. These supporting characters are fun to watch and learn about their strengths and weaknesses.

Saoirse Ronan and Sam Rockwell are both wonderful together, with Saoirse being perky and positive, while Sam is more beaten down by life. In the supporting cast, we get the different suspects who all shine in their quirky roles throughout the film.

The story follows two police officers that must investigate the murder within the West End theatre. It sees everything look like they could be a suspect and the police officers must get to the bottom of the case before the killer strikes again.

The story is very clever, it openly mocks a certain style of a murder mystery. This plays perfectly into how the case unfolds as the movie is filled with puns along the way. Plenty of clues point the fingers at different suspects, which keep us guessing along the way.

Everything in told in a lighter tone, to keep the story feeling engaging throughout too. This is a joy to watch and a story that keeps you wanting more.

See How They Run is a mystery comedy that dives into a murder in 1950s West End. It thrives in the era, with costumes, music and set design. This helps suck us into the environment that gives us a truly enjoyable movie experience. The comedy hits well, with puns or eccentric versions of characters along the way.

Final Thoughts See How They Run is a truly delightful movie, with laughs, a mystery and brilliant performances.

End of the Road (2022) Movie Review

End of the Road – Movie Review

Director: Millicent Shelton

Writer: David Loughery (Screenplay)

Writer: Christopher J Moore (Story)

  • Queen Latifah (Hustle)
  • Ludacris (F9)
  • Beau Bridges (Max Payne)
  • Mychala Lee
  • Shaun Dixon

Plot: In this high-octane action thriller, a cross-country road trip becomes a highway to hell for Brenda and her family. Alone in the New Mexico desert, they have to fight for their lives when they become the targets of a mysterious killer.

Runtime: 1 Hour 29 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Story: End of the Road starts as Brenda (Latifah) must relocate her family, Kelly (Lee) and Cam (Dixon) across America. They are joined by Brenda’s brother Reggie (Ludacris) for the trip, as the family tries to regroup after her husband and their father’s death.

When the family overhear a murder in the room next door, they find themselves getting involved in bigger problems. After Reggie takes a bag of money from the room, they find themselves being hunted down by killers in New Mexico.

Verdict on End of the Road

Brenda is a widowed mother who is forced into relocating her family across America. She is an ER nurse, which shows how easily she can operate under pressure. Brenda can break down any problems they are facing and must step up when they clash with a cartel gang.

Reggie is Brenda’s brother who agrees to join the family on the road trip. He is seen as a slacker, but he can get the jobs done with how he handles everything in life. Reggie ends up getting the family in trouble and finds himself wanting to fix the problems.

Kelly & Cam are Brenda’s children who aren’t happy about moving across the country. They are still grieving the loss of their father while being typical children in road trip movie.

Queen Latifah is wonderful in the leading role, going completely against type, being a strong determined action star. This works well because we are used to seeing Ludacris in all action roles in the Fast franchise. The rest of the cast do well, even if they don’t get too much more than the typical characters to work with.

The story follows a family that is travelling to relocate after the death of the husband and father. Their trip takes a turn for the worse when they hear a murder and start getting tracked by a killer hunting for their missing money.

Like many road trip movies where things go wrong, this keeps the story on the edge of your seat, as we left to see if they can make it. the movie leans heavily into a racial undertone, which shows the difficult travelling situations the family face.

The journey itself is filled with peril that does put their lives in danger but they never feel like they are in true danger, despite being against a ruthless criminal. Deep down this story is about bringing a family closer together after a tragic death months before and seeing their lives changed.

End of the Road is an action thriller that follows a family who gets caught up against a ruthless criminal in New Mexico. It has family cars in car chases and some fun one-liners along the way. Things might not ever feel completely intense but by the end of the film, it offers enough action to keep us along for the ride.

Where to Watch:  End of the Road is available on Netflix

Final Thoughts End of the Road is a fun, against-type casting action movie.

HollyBlood is a horror comedy following a group of teenagers who find themselves fighting back against a vampire in their high school. It gets to play into the modern-day fantasies of vampires, mocking the Twilight franchise. While using high school politics to navigate the introduction to the characters.

When it comes to dealing with the vampires, we get plenty of comedy in how everything unfolds. Seeing how the vampire figures have become seen in the modern world, with fantasy movies. It all plays out very fun, never taking itself too seriously.

The performances in the film work well. The actors play the roles they are performing, showing the eccentric side of people within the vampire world.

Hatching (2022) Movie Review

Hatching – Movie Review

Director: Hanna Bergholm

Writer: Ilja Rautsi (Screenplay)

Writer: Hanna Bergholm (Story)

  • Reino Nordin
  • Oiva Ollila

Plot: A young gymnast, who tries desperately to please her demanding mother, discovers a strange egg. She hides it and keeps it warm, but when it hatches, what emerges shocks them all.

Runtime: 1 Hour 26 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Story: Hatching starts as young gymnast Tinja (Solalinna) is facing increasing pressure to perform from her Mother (Heikkila). After seeing her mother kill a bird in their home, Tinja discovers an egg in the woodland area surrounding their home. She decides to keep the egg, only to see it grow to a massive size.

When the egg finally hatches, Tinja is left to care for what was inside. As she learns the dangers that have been created from the unknown.

Verdict on Hatching

Tinja is a young gymnast who has been getting pushed to her limits and has not reached the perfection level her mother expects. She is a lonely girl that doesn’t get to socialise with the other gymnast. Tinja does seem to lack other social skills in her life, as we see how she reacts to the bird in the home. She decides to help hatch the egg left behind and finds herself caring for something she never imagined.

Tinja’s mother is a social media blogger, using her family life to try and capture perfection. This is seen in how she expects Tinja to enter and win competitions. She pushes Tinja past her limits and seems to have the whole world revolving around her.

Tinja’s Father and little brother Matias are in her life, with her Father supportive, from a distance and Matias being the annoying little brother.

There is only one true star in this movie and that is young actress Siiri Solalinna. She is incredible in the movie, showing the vulnerable state her character was in. We see the striking loneliness coming through, as well as the desperation to achieve success. Sophia Heikkila makes us hate her mother’s character very easily. You can see her selfish side of her and only caring about herself.

The story follows a young gymnast who decides to hatch an egg she finds in the forest after its mother is killed. It soon grows to a massive side, leaving the young girl shocked at what comes out of the egg.

This story is a strange one, as it plays heavily into the pressure a younger sports star can find themselves under. Creating an isolated and lonely environment for a growing child. This pressure seems to create everything else that happens, causing a ripple effect in her life and fighting any of the problems she is facing.

In truth, you could read a lot into this, being part of a breaking family. Ignoring the truth to try and move on with your own life and wanting to create a better version of yourself.

Hatching is a fantasy horror that follows a young girl hatching an egg and becoming shocked at what she finds inside. The movie gets pushed into horror comedy with certain interactions between Tinja and the creature. With this almost feels like E.T.’s relationship between the two. However, it does go into more horror with the connection. When it comes to the special effects, this is the highlight of the film, as they look amazing.

Final Thoughts Hatching is an odd movie, filled with laughs, shocks and great creature creation.

This Land (2022) Movie Review

This Land – Movie Review

Director: Matthew Palmer

Plot: This Land is a film exploring six groups of Americans as they experience Election Day across the United States.

Runtime: 1 Hour 10 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Verdict on This Land

This Land is a documentary which shows six different Americans who address who they would have been voting for during the 2020 election. It addresses problems certain families had, which only one side of the government wanted to help with. This dives into immigration, voting rights and other human rights. All of these could change with the wrong government in charge.

This doesn’t go out of its way to address which side would be best all around, Trump or Biden. It puts the full focus on what has been offered to give the families the best chances in life. This should be more about what elections are, focusing on who could help, not a massive show of parades like most elections are.

This Land is an interesting documentary putting a human side to voting. This is something we don’t see that often and it feels refreshing.

Final Thoughts This Land is an interesting documentary.

Story: Kingdom of the Dinosaurs starts as World War III breaks out, a small group of survivors Drew (Haldor) and his wife Carly Rae (Rose) make it to a bunker. When the supplies start running low, Drew must lead a team to the surface.

Once the team is on the surface, they learn of the devastation left on the surface. The dinosaurs have taken over and now, the facility is under attack from dinosaurs too.

Verdict on Kingdom of the Dinosaurs

Kingdom of the Dinosaurs is a sci-fi horror that uses a mix of the destruction of war and dinosaurs to throw us into an apocalyptic world. This makes the film have a zombie feel, with how everything is created, would be the base plan for a zombie movie, but this time using dinosaurs.

When it comes to the core story, it is as simple as a small group needing to leave safety for resources. The risk will have casualties and the home base also comes under attack. Nothing really feels that fresh and it is more waiting to see how the characters will get picked or fight back.

The effects work well for the low budget, with some dinosaur shots looking great, while others do not. When it comes to the dinosaur actions, it tends to go against everything we have seen in the Jurassic Park franchise.

Final ThoughtsKingdom of the Dinosaurs is an easy-watch sci-fi action movie.

Anna has one wish, to be reunited with her children, but her health isn’t good and the paperwork between the countries causes problems. It is up to faith to see if they can be reunited.

Verdict on Pursuit of Freedom

Pursuit of Freedom is a faith-based drama that follows one woman’s journey through hell to get reunited with her children. The story focuses on the journey to recovery, rather than the horrors she goes through. It focuses on the people that will risk everything to make the reunion happen.

This is based on a true story, and it shows how the story look almost impossible until people worked together. With them going against what is expected from people in the world.

The performances in the movie are strong throughout the movie showing the pain the characters are forced to go through.

Final Thoughts Pursuit of Freedom is a powerful faith-based drama.

Love in the Villa (2022) Movie Review

Love in the Villa – Movie Review

Director: Mark Steven Johnson

Writer: Mark Steven Johnson (Screenplay)

Plot: A young woman takes a trip to romantic Verona, Italy, after a breakup, only to find that the villa she reserved was double-booked, and she’ll have to share her vacation with a cynical British man.

Runtime: 1 Hour 54 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Story: Love in a Villa starts when Julie (Graham) is preparing for her holiday in Verona, with her boyfriend Brandon (Ablack). Julie finds herself getting dumped before the holiday and now decides to take the trip alone.

Upon arriving in Verona, Julie discovers the apartment has been double booked with English man Charlie (Hopper). The two clash turns into a battle over the apartment before they put aside their differences and experience Verona.

Verdict on Love in the Villa

Julie is a hopeless romantic that has planned her perfect trip with her boyfriend to Verona. However, she finds herself dumped on the eve of the holiday, deciding to take it alone. She struggles to start with, as the trip is hard, and the apartment is double booked. Her fantasies of Verona are thrown out until she starts to get along with her new random roommate.

Charlie is a wine buyer for a major company, he travels to Italy every year to search for the next great wine and he is brilliant at his job. He clashes with Julie over the room, showing he isn’t afraid to fight back until he finally opens up to show her around Verona.

In the supporting characters, we get the pairs of partners who have put them through pain before the trip. There are also the locals that show the pair around their city.

Tom Hopper and Kat Graham are both great in their roles. They make the most of the script and get the laughs along the way. The pair have good chemistry in the film, showing two people coming from different worlds.

The story follows a woman who has just broken up with her boyfriend and takes her trip to Verona anyway. This is her dream holiday and doesn’t turn out to be anything like she expected. She must deal with an English roommate whom she clashes with before she embraces her trip away.

In a year where we get a lot of Italy is the country of love stories. This does feel like just another one to throw into the mix. It gets all the basics right, broken hearts coming together to realize the life they had been living is different to the life they want.

The weakness here comes from the fact that not enough is different to anything we have seen before and by the end we know exactly how it is playing out. It seems to like the final bit of charm, despite being easy to watch.

Love in the Villa is a romantic comedy that follows two different people from different worlds that end up in Verona with broken hearts. It is the typical worlds collide romance in one of the most romantic cities in the world. There are moments in the beauty of the city, but it feels like some of it gets held back more than it should.

Where to Watch: Love in the Villa is available on Netflix

Final Thoughts Love in the Villa is a by-the-book romantic comedy with good leading performances.
