Opinion Battles Year 4 Round 2

Most Anticipated Movie of 2018

2018 is well underway and all our players have their own picks for what films they want to see this year, but which one is the one they want to see the most?

Next Round – Favourite Steven Spielberg Movie – Closing Date Friday 2nd March 2018

Deadpool 2

Deadpool was one of my favourite superhero movies, it was loud and happy to push the limits with violence and language. We had Ryan Reynolds shining and now we want to see where he takes the character next, while I am not familiar with the source material we do get a fan favourite Cable joining the cast too.

Quiet Place

There are a ton of upcoming movies in 2018 that have potential to be hits however, the one that stands out to me is John Krasinski’s upcoming horror thriller, A Quiet Place that he also acts in with his wife, Emily Blunt, playing a couple. Horror movies that manage to use quiet to their advantage tend to easily build incredible amount of tension and atmosphere and that is what I hope this movie will achieve.

Deadpool 2

Maybe the only one here that isn’t Infinity War, I still stand by Deadpool as my favourite superhero movie yet, and I dunno how long I can wait for the sequel!

Ready Player One

Ugh. I know most people are excited about the 2018 movie releases but, looking at the list of films, I kind of lose the will to live. HOW many superhero movies?!?! Can no other type of movie be made anymore??? These are the main 2018 films that jump out as being ones I really want to see: Cloverfield Movie, The Shape Of Water, Ready Player One, Annihilation, Halloween & Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2. Yeah, I doubt any of those will be the “winning choice”. Okay. I have to pick just one? I don’t want to be all mainstream & boring plus the backlash against this movie worries me, but… Screw it. I’ll go with my heart. My choice is Ready Player One. It’s a 1980s-loving Spielberg movie & I’m an 80s kid. So sue me. I want a fun blockbuster. At least it’s not a superhero movie! 🙂

Avengers Infinity Wars

Oh, how could it not be?

As the culmination of essentially every Marvel film since 2008, Infinity War (assuming it’s all done right) will surely be the cinematic event of the year (of the decade, even) and watching tons and tons of our favourite superheroes squaring off against Thanos in an infinitely huge galactic adventure will hopefully bring endless thrills, chills, shocks and drama.

It’s all too easy to get our hopes up, to majorly overhype it, but this one will be a must see – a major cinematic event which will surely storm the box office and get us all talking about it for a long time afterwards.

The Meg

Okay, I’m not the most ‘up-to-date’ and clued up movie fan (as I’m sure we all know) so I had to look up a BIG list of 2018 anticipated movies. I saw quite a few I wouldn’t mind watching (mainly horrors and that Cloverfield one) but in all honesty, The Meg is the one I was most delighted and excited to read about. It’s a science fiction / horror starring Jason Statham (!) AND A SEVENTY FOOT MEGALODON SHARK – I’m assuming this will be played by CGI because that particular, huge species of shark is now (thankfully) extinct.

But yeah, a film about a seventy foot shark REALLY appeals to me and best of all, it very well might end up being complete nonsense, but should at least still be fun. It sounds like SO much fun! And the tagline? – “the most feared predator in history…is no longer history”. Genius. Or something like that. I can’t wait anyway, bring on the big shark!

Rob – Movie Rob

Solo

As a HUGE Star Wars fan, I have always highly anticipated any films form the franchise.

I was so pleased with what was done with Rogue One, that I hope that they are able to once again create an amazing side story to the events and characters of the story that happened a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

My most anticipated film for the year 2018 is The Nutcracker and The Four Realms, and the reasons are obvious: it is inspired by a classic novella from E.T.A. Hoffmann, which never gets old and which can put anyone in a Christmas mood; uses the music by Tchaikovsky; has a stellar cast, including Keira Knightley, Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren; and promises to be a visual delight, as seen from its trailer (it will also be in 3D!). I think it will be better than Disney’s Alice in Wonderland instalments, because with its accent on both Russian ballet and music, The Nutcracker promises to be both an unparalleled entertainment and a cultural delight.

Deadpool 2

The film I’m looking forward to most in 2018, has to be without a doubt Deadpool 2. Having seen the trailer with my thoughts here,  and the first of Ryan Reynolds ventures – as the anti- hero for adults only – as Deadpool link to here,  he’s definitely one of the best of the Marvel dudes. I loved Deadpool’s wisecracks, his pop culture references, the soundtrack and his devotion to  Vanessa, his girl in the first movie. It was the Valentines Day movie, I’d been waiting for – as opposed to a bunch of acting types headed by Jennifer Aniston celebrating love in about 5 different ways, in an ensemble by the numbers rom com. Yawn. So this year, Deadpool’s up against Cable played by Josh Brolin- and it will be interesting to see Deadpool up against this Goonie. As Goonies never die right?!

Halloween

While there are many big new superhero stories on the way, I am most eager for the return, 40 years on, of Jamie Lee Curtis to “Halloween!”

Laurie Strode was one of horror’s first “empowered women” – she fought back against evil – and that evil turned out to be her brother!  Jamie Lee Curtis playfully teased her return to the “Halloween” franchise, and I hope they respect the original while invigorating the story for a new generation.

Here is a link to my whole story on the iconic Scream Queen Jamie Lee Curtis:

Venom

The way I see it, any upcoming Marvel Cinema Universe (MCU) film will be highly anticipated not only for die-hard comic fans but for anyone looking to escape at the pictures. This is why for me Venom will be a film I look forward to the pleasure of viewing. Directed by Reuben Fleischer (Zombieland) he has promised, “badass action, Venom’s Dark humour” and what would excite any filmaholic “an absolutely stunning performance by Tom Hardy.” Hardy also reinforced that he won’t let the audience down stating “I give you my word of honour that I’m going to do everything that I can to deliver the best Venom that I possibly can muster. I know how important he is to you and I know important he is.” Following the recent popularization of the superhero film genre in releases such as Dr Strange, Deadpool, yet another Thor movie and the reinvigoration of the Spiderman franchise, this film already has serious artistic and commercial momentum. Does 2018 get more promising than this?

The Incredibles 2

My most anticipated film of 2018 is definitely The Incredibles 2. Animation is my favorite medium for film and I love Pixar. I personally have enjoyed on some level all of their films and I adore the original Incredibles. They have the entire team back including director Brad Bird. I just can’t wait for to be with this family again and go on another adventure

Ready Player One

After thinking long and hard about whether I was more excited for Avengers: Infinity War or Ready Player One, I decided they’re about equal, but Ready Player One has the added perk of being something we’ve never seen before, as opposed to more superhero stuff (which granted, I still love). Based on Ernest Cline’s awesome futuristic novel, Ready Player One promises to be a geek’s paradise, full of pop culture references that will likely be the subject of countless analysis videos for years to come. With Steven Spielberg himself at the helm and Cline supervising the script, I cannot wait for this movie and all the nerdy coolness contained in its virtual world.

The Avengers Infinity War

There are many superhero films coming out this year that I am greatly looking forward to: Black PantherThe Incredibles 2(FINALLY!!), and Deadpool 2 just to name a few. However, my excitement for any these pale in comparison to my excitement for Avengers: Infinity War. The past 10 years of Marvel superhero movies have been leading up to this incredible story.  There have been a few bumps along the way but for the most part, Marvel has delivered some pretty spectacular heroes and characters. With Infinity War, that all comes clashing to a head. I watched the first trailer released so many times it might have been detrimental to my expectations of the film. But I don’t care. This is what I have been waiting for during the past decade and the hype could not be more real.

Ready Player One and Han Solo in the same year is enough right there. 2018 looks very good indeed.

Be sure to vote for your most anticipated movie of 2018 in Round 2 of this year’s Opinion Battles! There are so many movies this year that promise to be big hits, but which are you most looking forward to? While Infinity War has me hyped, I’m just as expectant for the pop culture geekery of Ready Player One. Thankfully, we only have to wait another month or so for it!

I still haven’t seen a 2017 film yet, so 2018 is a stretch for me.
I voted for ‘Halloween’ though, as JLC still looks hot!
