Verdict on India Sweets and Spices
Alia is a young Indian woman from a successful family, who returns home for summer. She is expected to attend all the parties, as the families look to arrange her relationships. Alia isn’t prepared for this, she wants to have her own life and when she learns about her own family’s secrets, she learns where they have come from.
Varun is from a family that runs the local grocery store, Alia takes a shine to him. He is working to get a basic education compared to the rest of society as he and his family must learn how to adapt to the area.
Sheila and Ranjit are Alia’s parents, they have their own secrets going on, being kept keeping their place in the high society of the area. This gets strained over the summer as their past comes back to both of them.
Sophia Ali in the leading role is a lot of fun, breaking the rules that are seen as tradition. Her performance carries the film, with the positive reaction to finding herself. In the supporting cast everyone is great and it all comes together through their performances.
The story follows a young Indian woman that gets to learn about her family’s secrets as she looks to discover herself over a summer vacation.
This story gets compared to ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ which you can clearly see. It uses the Indian traditions that are still generational to show the changes that are changing. This all comes off very fun and pokes fun at the high society behaviour going on throughout the film.
India Sweets and Spices is a romantic comedy that uses the changing culture within a modern day Indian community. It shows how things have been changing over the years and how the older generation need to accept the younger ones. This also explores the modern high society behaviour looking down on people.
