What Went Wrong with Halloween Ends?

What Went Wrong with Halloween Ends?

Halloween Ends is the third instalment of David Gordon Green’s vision of the trilogy sequel to the 1978 original. While Ends has continued the mixed reception for the three films, it is the one that took the biggest swerve from the previous two. Today I am going to look at certain factors I feel created the questions about the biggest horror movie of the year.

From now on there will be full SPOILERS for Halloween Franchise in general.

Halloween (2018)

Halloween Ends

2018 saw the first of the rebooted franchise with a legacy sequel to the original 1978 movie. It sees Laurie waiting for Michael Myers to return, it has cost her family and friends. When Michael escapes he returns to Haddonfield to go on a new killing spree before a showdown with Laurie. This Halloween film showed the long-term trauma Laurie suffered her whole life because of that night in 1978.

The movie ends with Michael trapped in a burning house. As the Strode women escape believing they finally defeated the Boogeyman who tore their family apart. It is wrapped up nicely and ready for the sequel.

Halloween Kills
Halloween Ends

Halloween Kills might not get off to the best start, because it shows a random saving of Frank, instead of picking up where the Strode women see the fire engines heading to Michael’s trap. With that opening sequence, it would have thrown us back into the chaos and with Michael’s voracious attack on the firefighters, we see him unleashed again.

The movie falls into a mob mentality movie, seeing the two coming together trying to hunt down the killer. It sees the return of Tommy Doyle and Lindsay now as adults leading the hunt for Michael. This does show the consequences of vigilante behaviour and by the end of the film, you will be cheering for Michael. The highlight of this film is that it takes place on the same night.

Halloween Ends

Halloween Ends

Halloween Ends takes us four years into the future, Laurie and Allyson have moved on with their lives. Nobody has seen Michael Myers since that fateful night, despite violent crimes continuing around the town. It looks like the town is still filled with the shadows of Michael Myers, trying to transition evil to new targets.

This film sees a strange rise and connection between an outsider in the town and Michael Myers. With the haunting feeling going around the town, as the bodies start piling up. This leads us to the bigger topics that follow.

The Trailer

When it comes to selling a movie, you need to bring the fans in. The trailer mostly includes everything from the only battle between Michael and Laurie. Most of what we actually got and the first three-quarters of the film is not shown in the trailer. This creates an expectation from the fans who are expecting to see Michael doing the killing.

Corey

Corey is the most important addition to this movie. He gets introduced through a babysitting accident, resorting in a child being killed in the opening sequence. While it was an accident, the town doesn’t believe him, causing him to become an outsider and attacked around town. He never got charged with murder and Laurie sees a lot of herself in him. After introducing him to Allyson the two strike up an unlikely romance.

When Corey gets attacked by the local bullies, they believe they have seriously hurt him. However, Michael Myers drags him into the sewers to transfer his evil into him. This makes Corey the next violent threat in the town, targeting anyone that has wronged him, giving Laurie a striking fear.

Moving the evil to Corey becomes confusing because it goes into the chapter of the previous films they promised not to return to. The one way something else was controlling Michael and the transference of evil makes zero sense compared to the more realistic approach the beginning of the reboot went for.

This idea could have worked out well if the original incident happened before Michael’s return. It could have created the image the town is always trying to create a Boogeyman, right back from 1978 and turning on people involved in accidents. Even if we didn’t want to get into the pre-2018 attack, it could have hinted at Corey being easily manipulated during the two previous Halloween movies.

Michael Myers is Injured

Michael Myers is portrayed to be badly injured and whenever he attacks someone, he seems to be fixing himself, becoming stronger. This is another strange decision because, at the end of Halloween Kills, he is brutally attacked but got up like nothing happened to kill everyone, including Karen Strode.

Suddenly in Halloween Ends, he has spent four years living in the sewer pipe like Pennywise killing passed-out people. Corey is going to be his latest victim but ends up helping Michael get back on his feet. To make things even stranger when Michael finally has his showdown with Laurie, he is back to full health.

Everything done to Michael doesn’t make much sense in this movie and it is clear that this could drive fans against this movie. This isn’t the Michael Myers we had met in these movies and the blend between Pennywise hiding and Freddy Kruger rebuilding his strength doesn’t make complete sense.

The Time Jump

Moving the story forward 4 years doesn’t help the film either. The unique idea of having the first two movies happening over one night helps make the pace feel non-stop. It was even left with the cliff-hanger to bring us back to the franchise for the final part of the night, to finish Michael Myers for good. The time jump also changed Laurie a lot, bringing her back to the bubbly figure and wanting to follow Sidney Prescott’s idea of writing about her attack. Add in the fact the town still celebrates Halloween like it is a happy holiday. It is clearly time to question how important it is now in this town.

The Death of Michael Myers

During the final showdown between Michael and Laurie, Laurie gets the better of him. Seeing the pair have a brutal fight and Laurie pinning him to a table before slicing his throat. It showed a much more human side to Michael, almost erasing everything the film tried to do differently. I personally liked the most humane way Michael was taken out, before the ritual goodbye. The town comes together to throw the body into a grinder, ending any chance of him returning.

Overall

When it comes to any horror franchise people are either going to love or hate it. At the end of the day, people have expectations before going in and sometimes they don’t get what they wanted. Being the third film in the mini franchise reboot the box office numbers were always going to be lower. Sadly, the decision to premiere on Peacock too in America hasn’t helped, giving people access to the high-quality version of the film on opening day.

We follow Hilma’s career, as despite going against the traditions, she made a major impact in the artistic world. Hilma has an amazing career that is filled with the ups of success and downs of rejection of chasing her dream.

Verdict on Hilma

Characters

Hilma is an artist who lived a very different life from many people. She went through the trauma of losing a younger sister as a child. While living her life against the system in her determination to become an artist. We follow most of her life as she overcame obstacles along the way, creating a new style many hadn’t seen before. Her journey is fascinating, as her belief to create her work, would go against everything people would have normally accepted.

Performances

The performances from Lena Olin and Tora Hallstrom as the two different ages of Hilma are great. The story follows the life of artist Hilma Af Klint an artist who battled against traditions and earnt the most respect after she passed away. This follows through her young years to her final days, as we see how she wouldn’t follow the expectations for the time to become whom we look back at now.

Cast

  • Viktor Klem
  • Fruzsina Hais
  • Judit Schell
  • Andrea Ladanyi
  • Zsolt Anger

Plot: A post-mortem photographer and a little girl confront ghosts in a haunted village after the First World War.

Runtime: 1 Hour 55 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Story: Post Mortem starts when photographer Tomas (Klem) is asked to help a small village with their photos of the dead. In the aftermath of the First World War, Tomas built up a reputation for being one of the best at respecting the dead.

Once Tomas is in the village, he teams up with a young girl Anna (Hais), and they both start seeing shadows in the village. The pair team up to investigate what has been happening, learning the disturbing truth about the village.

Verdict on Post Mortem

Characters

Tomas is a post-mortem photographer that worked on photographing the dead around the First World War. He gives the dead an honourable last photo before they are laid to rest. Tomas is asked to help in a small village, where he finds himself dealing with more than he was expecting. He must figure out what the ghosts of the village want, teaming up with Anna in search of answers.

Anna is a young girl that brings Tomas to her village. She tells him about the dangers and is one of the only ones that will support him in the search for the truth.

In the supporting characters, we get the other residents of the village who have different reactions to Tomas being there. They have been through a lot after the war.

Performances

Viktor Klem and Fruzsina Hais in the leading roles are both great. They show the fear, determination and teamwork their characters have to make this work.

Story

The story follows a photographer and young girl as they team up to help her village understand what is happening with the ghosts in her village. This sees them trying to understand what is wanted and what the secret causing the hauntings truly is.

The story does give us a very interesting spin on the ghost story. It takes us through a world that shows how the early photographers operated with photos of the dead. There is plenty of disturbing imagery when it comes to showing how the haunting occurs.

This will keep us guessing what will happen next and makes us want to see how the horror will unfold. Using the village’s unease of strangers coming into the village creates more tension.

Themes

Post Mortem is a horror that takes us into a post-First World War village to photograph the dead. This leads to the haunting events after an unseen shadow can be seen in the photos. The horror is built up well and doesn’t hold back the shocking moments that many horror films hold back.

Where to Watch: Post Mortem will be available on Digital Download from 31st October

Final Thoughts Post Mortem is a disturbing and unsettling horror movie.

Corbin Nash (2018) Movie Review

ABC Film Challenge – Horror – Q – Queeny – Corbin Nash – Movie Review

Corbin Nash

Director: Ben Jagger

Writer: Ben Jagger, Dean Jagger, Christopher P Taylor (Screenplay)

Cast

  • Corey Feldman (The Lost Boys)
  • Malcolm McDowell (Halloween)
  • Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner)
  • Bruce Davison (X-Men)
  • Dean Jagger

Plot: A rogue Police Detective in search of his parents’ killer is murdered and then reborn as the ultimate killer.

Runtime: 1 Hour 34 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Story: Corbin Nash starts as a police detective Corbin Nash (Jagger) has been found injured after an investigation. He is rescued and taken back to health, only he has changed into an ultimate killer.

Corbin is still investigating the missing people and trying to learn who killed his parents. The further he digs the bigger conspiracy he learns about, as ruthless supernatural killer Queeny (Feldman) has been hunting the streets.

Verdict on Corbin Nash

Corbin Nash is an action horror that follows a detective in a battle with vampires. The story seems to want to be edgy, only it ends up falling quite short because we have seen similar many times before. It does seem to have two main storylines going too, which doesn’t help keep us engaged.

The performances feel completely over the top and will often leave you feeling lost in what is happening. We have a string of horror icons, but the decision to have Corey Feldman as a drag queen killer is very strange in this day and age.

The movie is meant to be getting a sequel, which is strange because it doesn’t feel like it earnt enough in the Corbin Nash character to make this happen.

Final Thoughts Corbin Nash is a strange lifeless vampire movie that wants to build a universe.

V/H/S/99 (2022) Movie Review

V/H/S/99 – Movie Review

V/H/S/99

Plot: Witness a hellish vision of 1999, as social isolation, analogue technology and disturbing home videos fuse into a nightmare of found footage savagery.

Runtime: 1 Hour 48 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Verdict on V/H/S/99

Shredding (D. Maggie Levin)

Shredding follows an aspiring punk rock band that decides to break into an abandoned Colony Underground location. A place where one of their favourite bands was killed in a fire, the idea is to record themselves playing on the same stage. What they find will leave them terrorised by the band they respect so much. Shredding does a great job at creating a punk band with no respect, they think they are above everyone in this world. This fast-paced start is a great start to the found footage we see. 4/5

Suicide Bid (D. Johannes Roberts)

Suicide Bid follows a college student Lily trying to get into a sorority, she must pass a test by the sisters. Lily gets given a story about a hazing ritual performed, spending one night in a coffin. As Lily reluctantly agrees to take part, she learns the sisters have other plans for her. This creates a claustrophobic nightmare for Lilly, with the story using the confined space to create a terrifying horror. 5/5

Ozzy’s Dungeon (D. Flying Lotus)

Ozzy’s Dungeon follows children competing in an obstacle television show. Donna is about to be the first winner of the show before an accident leaves her horrendously injured. Flash forward to the family of Donna having captured the host of the show, to make him pay for what his show did to their daughter. In what is a twisted revenge tale, this shows the corruption in gameshows and the effect it has on the victims. 4/5

The Gawkers (D. Tyler MacIntyre)

The Gawkers follows a group of teenagers causing chaos around the neighbourhood, as one of the group is preparing for Y2K. this sees them continue to become perverts, by filming the local women, focusing more on the neighbour across the street. This is a story that shows creeps getting taught a lesson. It can be compared to the first story we ever saw in a V/H/S series. 4/5

To Hell and Back (D. Joseph Winter, Vanessa Winter)

To Hell and Back follows a documentary filmmaking crew that gets to record a demon summoning. A woman has accepted to give herself to the demon, but nothing can prepare the filmmakers for what they are going to see, as they find themselves taken by the demon. This final chapter is pure chaos and it is brilliant, the exact reason why found footage style filmmaking works so well. 5/5

Final Thoughts V/H/S/99 is the best in the V/H/S franchise.

The 25th Anniversary of I Know What You Did Last Summer

Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of I Know What You Did Last Summer

I Know What You Did Last Summer

On the 17th of October 1997, Columbia Pictures and Mandalay Entertainment released Jim Gillespie’s I Know What You Did Last Summer. Scream screenplay author Kevin Williamson wrote the script for Lois Duncan’s novel. The movie starred Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr and Ryan Phillippe.

Box Office

In 1997, the movie was one of the biggest horror movies, being the 3rd highest domestic grossing horror movie, behind Scream (Even though Scream was originally released later in 1996) and Scream 2, with a domestic gross of $72.5 Million. This made it the USA’s 20th highest-grossing movie of the year.

The Story
I Know What You Did Last Summer

I know What You Did Last Summer four friends Julie James (Hewitt), Helen Shivers (Gellar), Barry Cox (Phillippe) and Ray Bronson (Prinze Jr), who are involved in an accident. This sees a man killed and to save their futures, they decide to dispose of the body.

One year later they return home for the summer having all received a note saying, ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’. The four friends reunite and learn that their lives haven’t gone as planned. This leads to them discussing whether they should come clean about last year or not. Before long, the friends find themselves getting stalked by a mysterious hooded figure, carrying only a fishing hook. They must figure out who the killer is before it is too late.

The story plays out like the typical slasher, by having the group slowly picked off one by one, as they try to figure out who is behind it. It creates suspects along the way, ones that even see the group questioning each other. This does hold back on the blood, which is a way to be different to Scream, while still following the same sort of ideas.

The Legacy of I Know What You Did Last Summer
I Know What You Did Last Summer

In the 25 years since the original was made, there have been two sequels. First was ‘I Still Know What You Did Last Summer’. Which takes the survivors of the original to a tropical island to be hunted down by another killer. The second sequel is the strange one ‘I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer’. This one went straight to Video and brings a fresh batch of characters who covered up a murder. Only this time, it is a fully supernatural outing. In 2021 there was a short-lived television series of the same name, that only lasted one season. This is down to mostly negative reviews and failing to get closer to the original source material.

The Slasher Sub-Genre

The Slasher movie sub-genre was on fire during the late 70s and early 80s. The birth of iconic characters including Michael Myres, Jason Voorhees and Freddy Kruger fuelled the passion. However, we did get a lot of solo slashers that have amassed a cult following. By the end of the 80s, the sub-genre felt reduced to half-assed sequels to once popular movies. They still had fans, but many of them were not on anybody’s favourite list.

1996 changed things, when Scream came along, breathing fresh life into the sub-genre. Along with I Know What You Did Last Summer, other franchises were born. Urban Legend, and Jack Frost both started a new series before the reboots, remakes or sequels flooded the market in the early 2000s. There will always be a place in the horror community for the slasher sub-genre. As the ‘who dun it’ behind the first movie and cheesy style will always make for a fun popcorn flick.

Lois Duncan Vs. The Films

Lois Duncan was an American author who originally wrote ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ in 1973. The book was intended to be a young adult thriller that deals with the consequences of the action. In the films, the book got turned into a slasher movie. This did increase the book sales upon release, but Lois Duncan wasn’t a fan of the movie’s decision to change the tone of her story. The main reason for this was that her own daughter was murdered in a violent way. She wasn’t happy with the violence attached to her story, especially with the fact the case never got solved in her lifetime.

She is quoted in 1997 with ‘A movie loosely based upon my novel, “I Know What You Did Last Summer”, opened in theatres around the country [I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)]. I was ecstatic until I settled into a theatre seat with my box of popcorn and discovered that Hollywood had turned my teenage suspense story into a slasher film. The setting had been changed from the mountains of New Mexico to a fishing village on the East Coast, so an insane fisherman, who wasn’t in my book, could decapitate my characters with an ice hook. The first thing I did after leaving the theatre was phone our daughter Kerry and warn her not to let the grandchildren see it.’

Casting

In the casting stories about the movie. Both Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sarah Michelle Gellar auditioned for each other’s roles in the movie. Jennifer Love Hewitt was in the middle of the Party of Five run. Making the step away from TV for her first major film role.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

Sarah Michelle Gellar has just become a major star on television before the release of the now iconic role of Buffy Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This was also the first major film of her career, which was quickly followed up with Scream 2. Freddie Prinze Jr. would get his first major role in the movie, where he would find love with Sarah Michelle Gellar. With the pair happily married and living a wonderful life together.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

Ryan Phillippe completes the three biggest names in the movie. He had been in a few more movies with the biggest being Crimson Tide. Ryan was recommended by his then-girlfriend Reese Witherspoon for the role of Barry and the rest you would say is history. Ryan would reteam with Sarah Michelle Gellar a couple of years later in the popular Cruel Intentions.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

Outside of our core four actors, we do get some familiar faces. First, Johnny Galecki, who is now most famous for his role as Leonard in The Big Bang Theory. He has stepped right out of the TV world like Jennifer Love Hewitt at the time. His character Max has a crush on Julie because of their long-term friendship, in real life, Johnny and Jennifer had been friends for years too. The biggest name in the movie at the time of release was the late Anne Heche. Who in 1997 alone starred in Donnie Brasco, Wag the Dog and Volcano.
