The Main Movies to Watch in 2022

2022 is full of new movie releases. That’s why it’s hard to pick the right one to watch and leave some time for a website where you could try roulette wheel online or go for a workout. Cannot find a new movie for this evening? Then choose one of these ones.

Everything Everywhere All at Once

Evelyn, the laundry owner, lives in an unhappy marriage, struggles to communicate with her teenage daughter, and still can’t pay her taxes. One day, on the way to the taxman’s office, her husband Waymond suddenly changes his face and says something unbelievable. He claims that Evelyn is just one of many versions of herself in countless parallel universes. And that it is up to her to stop some evil that seeks to destroy all worlds. To do this, Evelyn must learn to communicate with other versions of herself and use their skills to fight the enemy.

The movie is built on contrasts. Hilariously silly scenes are juxtaposed with a poignant story about finding yourself in a “meaningless world.” It’s a kung fu action movie – but with melodrama in the vein of Wong Karwai.

Red Rocket

Former porn actor Mickey shamefully returns to his hometown with empty pockets. A disgruntled mother-in-law and his wife, whom he left years ago, are waiting for him there. Mickey tries to start his life over, but falls in love with a high school girl and plots another escape.

Single-story shacks, dirty streets, non-Hollywood faces of the locals – Sean Baker captures the unfamiliar and charming look of poor America. In this world, you want to stay longer and meet all the wacky residents of the town. The guide through the universe of “white trash” is Mickey – a modern-day Mephistopheles. Except that he, on the contrary, seeks the good, but is always committing evil.

RRR

India, 1920. Officer Rama serves the British and seeks out a rebel named Bhim. A friendship develops between the men by chance, and they find themselves faced with a difficult choice: fight against each other or unite in a war against the British invaders.

RRR may well become for Indian cinema what “Parasites” has become for South Korean cinema. On the one hand, the movie fits into the stereotypes of national cinematography: there is a lot of singing, breaking the laws of physics and fiery dancing. But at the same time, RRR has a well-written story about a conflict of worldviews. And the choreography and inventiveness of the battle scenes would be the envy of any modern blockbuster.

Fresh

The main character Noah has been dating the charming bachelor Steve for a few weeks now. He is witty, handsome and extremely caring, so the girl agrees without hesitation to spend the weekend with him in the country house. Noa doesn’t know yet that her boyfriend is an ogre.

Fresh bumps into several genres at once: a touching melodrama, a horror about cannibals, a black romantic comedy and even a feminist revenge thriller. First and foremost, it’s an unusual and stylish statement about sexism and codependent relationships. Director Mimi Cave is not afraid to be ironic about the subject and to shock audiences with wild scenes of violence.

X

A porn film crew arrives at a ranch in the middle of nowhere. There they are hunted by an elderly couple.

X is shot and staged like a 1970s horror movie: crackling film, naive dialogue and an unbelievable level of violence by today’s standards.

Director Ty West flirted with retromans in his debut feature “House of the Devil,” but the new picture comes out more mature and understandable. On the one hand, we are faced with the usual nostalgic slasher. On the other hand, it’s a jeweler’s work that blends “low” culture with the fashionable techniques of the hipster studio “A24”.

Death Count (2022) Movie Review

Death Count – Movie Review

Death Count Poster

Director: Michael Su (Bridge of the Doomed)

Writer: Michael Merino (Screenplay)

Cast

Plot: Strangers awaken in individual holding cells with no memory of how they arrived. They realize if they don’t acquire enough online “likes” in a timely manner, they’ll die horribly at the hands of a sinister executioner.

Runtime: 1 Hour 21 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Story: Death Count starts when 8 members of a school administration find themselves locked in cells. Rachel (French), John (Mezek), Selena (Pinn), Coach Roberts (Cannon), Mr Turner (Nolan), Mr Curtis (Shecter), Kim (Cole) and Jose (LaSardo). Chained up with explosives in their heads.

The Warden (Mandylor) is putting the prisoners through an online test. One where they must punish themselves in self-harm, with the audience voting on who deserves to stay. Each game gets darker and pushes the victims to their limits. Meanwhile, Detective Casey (Madsen) is rushing to locate the building in the video.

Verdict on Death Count

Characters

Warden is the person conducting the torturous games, forcing the victims to follow his instructions. He makes them clear and forces them into different forms of self-harm. If they don’t follow his rules, he will kill them.

Detective Casey is leading the investigation into what is happening. Along with his partner, he will try to figure out where the location is happening.

Rachel is the victim we get the biggest focus on. She is the one that starts to put the puzzle pieces together when it comes to understanding why they are there.

When it comes to the rest of the victims, they don’t get enough time to be developed to learn enough about the reason why they were selected.

Performances

Costas Mandylor as the Warden can see him channel the Jigsaw figure from Saw. Showing calm calculated language to get his twisted plans over. He is easily the highlight of the film, making us want to see what he will get them to do next.

Michael Madsen might well be a bigger name in the film, but his character feels like the least interesting side of the film.

When it comes to the cast involved in the games. Everyone does a strong enough job, they don’t get much to work with, relying on the screaming and pain to bring their characters out.

Story

The story follows a group of victims placed into a twisted game, where they are forced into committing self-harm for likes. Sending us down a path of torture, with the police trying to figure out who is behind it.

It does become clear there is a motivation behind the selection, as the group know each other. Where certain parts of the story can start leaving you with questions. It doesn’t seem like there was a set plan for the games, almost like expecting a certain amount to be out before each round. Rather than a concept of one going out each round.

In the end, the story is everything a torture-based horror would give you. It doesn’t become overly clear on the concept of the game, holding too much back from why they were selected.

Themes

Death Count is a horror thriller that will play out in a similar vein as a ‘Saw’ movie. Forcing the victims into bloody concepts to survive the games. The effects behind them are very impressive, showing the visceral pain they go through. The cells will make for a horrendous game room for the victims to be placed in.

Final Thoughts Death Count is a bloody torture porn movie, with impressive effects.

Incantation (2022) Movie Review

Incantation – Movie Review

Incantation Poster

Director: Kevin Ko

  • Ying-Hsuan Kao (Lust, Caution)
  • Sean Lin (Lost Romance)
  • Mohamed Elgendy (The Thief of Baghdad)
  • Ahmed Shawky Shaheen (The Dealer)

Plot: WARNING: This is a cursed video, it might contain certain risks to watch; For those who dare to follow, please solve the puzzle of my daughter’s curse with me.

Runtime: 1 Hour 50 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Story: Incantation starts as Ruo-nan (Tsai) is preparing to get her daughter Toto back. She has experienced a lot of tragedy in her life, believing evil is after her. Wanting to film her reunion with Toto, she keeps a camera rolling at her, despite a series of strange events happening.

Diving into her past, where the evil first started to find Rou-nan. As well as the escalating horrors the pair are going through, forcing her into investigating her past, in hopes of saving her daughter’s future.

Verdict on Incantation

Characters

Ruo-nan is a single mother that has been through a disturbing experience. One that has seen her need treatment in a mental hospital. She is getting her daughter back now and recovered until she is reconnected with her daughter. Seeing the evil return to her life, causing her the pain she suffered before to return. Facing a race to save her daughter, she must look back at her previous adventures as a Ghostbuster.

Toto is the daughter of Ruo-nan, she was raised in foster care. Now, she gets to return to her mother, where she will start seeing things and acting unusual. Drawing the evil to her, as she becomes more infected by the possession.

In the supporting characters, we get to meet the foster father, who has been giving her a happy life. The fellow ghostbusters who worked with Ruo-nan on the incident that unleashes everything.

Performances

Hsuan-yen Tsai is strong in the leading role, showing the desperation to keep a child safe. The performance is driven to connect and appeal to the audience, asking for help, rather than only being the victim within the story.

The supporting performances are strong too, most are filled with the fear they are experiencing. When the cast works together, they show good chemistry between friends. As well as the uncertainty between people who are separated.

Story

The story follows a mother searching for answers from her past, that have back to haunt her, with her daughter in danger now. This looks to bring forward a different dimension to the story, pulling us into the need to support the journey. Rather than only us watching to support, it feels like an appeal video, surrounded by a movie.

One of the few weaker points of the story comes from the flashbacks, we jump between the two timelines a lot. Which at times because annoying, because not enough spotlight is placed upon the horrors the child is going through. The research doesn’t feel like it answers enough either, despite the film keeping us on edge throughout.

Themes

Incantation is a horror mystery that wants to channel ‘The Ring’ by going down the viral spread of evil. The reasoning behind the evil is different, but Ruo-nan wanting to drive towards viral support through the problems comes through here. The locations will show that a sacred location has been disturbed, away from the bigger city. The movie does use found footage, which does capture the magic of the tension-riddled concept.

Where to Watch: Incantation is available on Netflix now.

Final ThoughtsIncantation is filled with tension that is ready to shred your nerves.

Henchmen (2018) Movie Review

ABC Film Challenge – Animation – H – Henchmen (2018)

Henchmen Poster

Plot: When the world is threatened by an evil supervillain, a teenager and his mentor team up to stop him.

Runtime: 1 Hour 29 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Story: Henchmen starts when Lester an orphaned young man who wants to one day become a supervillain. Heading to supervillain city, which will let him meet Hank. A former henchman who refused to commit his duty against children.

When Lester ends up causing Hank to stop a supervillain. He must take him under his wing only to lead to the pair needing to work together to fight evil supervillain Baron Blackout.

Thoughts on Henchman

Henchmen takes us into the world of henchmen, where we get to see the people that will work for the supervillains. Just for a job, not having the evil intentions. We get to see one young boy who will do anything to become the next supervillain. Believing it is the right thing for him. He is an orphan that does need guidance and ends up finding that through a henchman. Who doesn’t want to be evil and between them. They must prove they can find happiness in becoming the heroes the world would one day need.

Plenty of the characters fit into the type heroes and villains you would expect to see. With the heroes being bored and the villains being desperate. The animation style does work very well to make the film have a unique art style in a film which can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Final Thoughts Henchmen is a simple fun family film that gets the message about everyday life being important.

Jewel (2022) Movie Review

Jewel – Movie Review

Jewel Poster

Director: Adze Ugah

Writer: Glenrose Ndlovu, Adze Ugah (Screenplay)

Cast

  • Nqobile Nunu K.H.
  • Michelle Botes
  • Connie Chiume

Plot: A story about an unlikely love, and how some memories can never be forgotten.

Runtime: 1 Hour 20 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Story: Jewel starts as South African travel photographer Tyra Black (Botes) finds herself in Sharpeville. A town surrounded by the tragedy of the massacre in 1960. Taking a shine to a local woman Siya (Nunu K.H.), she asks for a personal tour of the town.

Making the offer for a private set of tours, Siya must overcome her own doubts, with the town not approving of the friendship. While her grandmother sees Tyra as a nice person who can help the family with their problems.

Verdict on Jewel

Characters

Tyra Black is a travel photographer, who does have a previous connection to the town. Although she was never raised there, she has a painful connection to it. She is searching for the best shots, ones that aren’t only of the memorial. Taking a shine to a local woman, she must learn how the town runs. Never afraid to stand up against anyone who confronts her.

Siya is a woman that tries to keep to herself while caring for her ill grandmother. She is reluctant to help Tyra even if the money could help her family. Left dealing with the consequences of her decision to help, she is torn between following a dream or staying with family.

Siya’s Grandmother is stuck around the home, needing care for her but doesn’t want to hold Siya back from her own life. Tshepo is Siya’s boyfriend, he gets jealous of the new friendship, using his own intimidation motives to stay ahead of the pair.

Performances

Michelle Botes as the confident photographer is great in the movie. She brings the no-fear approach to what her character goes through. Brings us a character you would want to go travelling with because they challenge the experience.

Nqobile Nunu K.H. is great too, bringing the trapped in this world figure to life. Showing us how she can’t up and leave because of her commitments in life. Showing us, that she only wants to help her loved one.

The supporting cast is strong too, with Sandile Mahlangu being disturbing in his behaviour, which escalates as the film unfolds.

Story

The story follows a tourist looking to get to know a local who lives around a tragic massacre. Racial tensions are still high between the two sets of people in the town. While diving into a love story that might tear one of the women’s life apart.

The love story mind well has different motives around it. The bigger focus in the film is on the hatred still surrounding a racial massacre. Showing despite a generation change, people will still hold a race accountable for the massacre, one this person had nothing to do with. It will offer a bigger conversation about what should be done around a tragedy that was only a small group’s behaviour, creating racial hatred to anyone on the other side.

Themes

Jewel is a drama set in the small town of Sharpeville the sight of a racial massacre. It has turned into a tourist attraction, where the two races keep their distances. Outside of the memorial, we get beautiful South African countryside, showing the beauty of the country.

Where to Watch: Jewel is available now on Netflix.

Final Thoughts Jewel is a powerful look at how racial tensions can tear love apart.

Letterbox Breakdown – Natalie Portman

Letterbox Breakdown – Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman

Studying through the stats on Letterbox, it becomes fascinating to see who has become the most-watched star and whether they should be number one. I am going to be looking through the roles and see if the numbers add up to different roles and importance within the film. Exploring to see who has the most leading roles, supporting roles or just random cameos. Without further ado, let’s explore.

Natalie Portman – 23 Films

Current Rank – Unranked

Different Roles

First, I will look at the number of different roles the actor has portrayed.

Number of different roles – 18

Roles in more than one film – 2

  • Jane Foster – Thor
  • Padme – Star Wars

Roles In Film

Second, I will explore the position in the film the star portrayed.

Leading Roles – 7
Natalie portman Lead Roles

The leading roles that Natalie has taken over the years have given her best performances. Including her Oscar win for ‘Black Swan’ and nomination for ‘Jackie’. In this selection, we also have ‘V for Vendetta’ which broke her back out of the Star Wars movies. It has been the recent run of leading roles that I have seen the most off. ‘Annihilation’, ‘Vox’, ‘Lucy in the Sky’ and ‘Jane Got a Gun’ where her performances get rave reviews, even if some of the films don’t get the same support.

Co-Lead – 3
Natalie Portman Co leading Roles

Natalie has tended to do the Co-Lead roles in the romantic comedy side of her career, in most of the movies I have seen. ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ does see her get a huge step up to importance as Jane Foster. The Fantastic ‘Leon’ must be considered a co-lead with Jean Reno and ‘Closer’ is a four-piece of stars with an equal level of importance.

Supporting Roles – 9
Natalie Portman Supporting Roles

In supporting roles, we can see the major franchises she wants the lead for. The prequel ‘Star Wars’ movies as well as ‘Thor’ and ‘Thor: Dark World’. Her age can be seen with the younger star appearing in Michael Mann’s ‘Heat’ and Tim Burton’s ‘Mars Attacks!’. It is the indie comedies ‘Garden State’ and ‘Hesher’ where we see the romantic comedy characters first coming to life in the movies I have seen.

Cameos – 4
Natalie Portman Cameos

Cameos is a difficult one because I have places in ‘This Changes Everything’ which is a documentary film, not sure what you would classify this as. We also get the return of Jane Foster in ‘Avengers Endgame’, even if it is more different angles of previously shot scenes. She plays herself in ‘Zoolander’. Completing the cameos, we have ‘The Darjeeling Limited’ where she does have a short movie that expands on this role.

The Missing Roles

This is a list of the biggest movies I haven’t yet seen from Natalie Portman. Strangely enough, I have seen 19/20 highest-ranked popularity movies of Letterbox. The number of missing seems high, lots are behind-the-scenes bits and pieces. The biggest missed movies include.

  • No Strings Attached
  • Brothers
  • Song to Song
  • Knight of Cups
  • The Other Boleyn Girl
  • Cold Mountain

The Letterbox Breakdown – Natalie Portman stats were looked at – 7th July 2022.
