Story: Eternals starts as we meet the Eternals lead by Ajak (Hayek), Sersi (Chan), Ikaris (Madden), Thena (Jolie), Kingo (Nanjiani), Sprite (McHugh, Phastos (Henry), Makkari (Ridloff), Druig (Keoghan) and Gilgamesh (Dong-seok) who have been watching over Earth protecting them from Deviants. They have looked over Earth for thousands of years, but have gone their separate ways after believing they got rid of all of the Deviants.

When a new Deviant arrives, Sersi, Sprite and Ikaris must look to bring the group back together to stop they taking out people, while learning of a bigger threat coming to Earth.

Thoughts on Eternals

Characters & Performances – Sersi takes centre stage of the group of Eternals, her powers are to transform matter, with her character trying to live an everyday life with Sprite in London, seeing the best in humanity, but never understanding her place in this world. She is meant to be calm, less standout figure of the group, which Gemma Chan brings to the role, she will bring the biggest emotional impact in the film. Ikaris is the flash figure of the group, the one that will always believe he will become the leader one day, he has laser beams coming out of his eyes, can fly, being the most typical superhero figure in the group. Richard Madden is great in his side of the film, getting the important interactions with each and every member of the group. Thena goes hand in hand with Gilgamesh, she is a fighter that will start to see the darker sides of their powers, something her fellow devoted fighter Gilgamesh will support her through, the pair will have a connection much like what we previous saw with Hulk and Black Widow. It is delightful to see Ma Dong-seok in a major American release and being placed next to Jolie will only increase his reputation, as they are both wonderful together. Kingo became a Bollywood star, the fast wit will give him the most laughs in the film, with his character being one that will stand by his beliefs. Phastos is a man that could create technology, always wanting to help humanity evolve along the way, living with the consequences of his decision. Druig can control minds and has often used this ability in secret over time to stop conflict, he wants to bring peace to the world, which is against everything the Eternals stand for. Makkari has super speed and often has side games with Druig, where the pair a special connection. Sprite looks the youngest of the group, being left to live eternity as a child, never being able to have what the other adult figures could. The full range of characters will give us a glimpse into what could be coming in the future for decision they must make in their lives.

StoryThe story here follows the Eternals that have been on Earth for centuries, protecting humanity from evil creatures, the Deviants, they fight them off whenever humanity is at risk, while watching over the evolution of man, until one day in the present day, they learn of a new threat they must reunite to protect the Earth again. This is an introduction to a new set of heroes, ones with bigger impact in the universe, let alone humanity. While we might gloss over the bigger questions about Thanos, we see how they must question everything they have been taught in the latest battle, beliefs which could tear them apart, or bring them closer than ever. For an origin story, this is one of the best ones we have seen for characters you might never have heard of, giving each one their strength, the vision of what they might call paradise and most of all, an unknown threat, a story with peril involved, we have stakes, unlike many superhero movies nowadays.

ThemesEternals is the latest Marvel action movie, where we will see the group globe trot through time, through major conflicts and present day. We will get the big actions sequences, which might well be the weakest part of the film, as most are similar to what we have seen before, and most of the characters only having one or two moves in their arsenal. This is covered up by the complex nature of the characters, which will play into the locations, with each being somewhere they would consider a happy place.

Final Thoughts Eternals is the best origin story we have seen in years, with the complex nature of the characters being the standout in the film.

Story: The Harder They Fall starts as we meet Nat Love (Majors) who has been chasing down the man that killed his parents for years, he has his own outlaw gang with Bill Pickett (Gathegi), Jim Beckworth (Cyler), Cuffee (Deadwyler) and Mary Fields (Beetz). They clash with another gang The Crimson Hoods, but Nat shows his honest side to keep a member alive.

Elsewhere Trudy Smith (King) and Cherokee Bill (Stanfield) are leading the release of Rufus Buck (Elba) the leader of the Buck Gang. With Rufus taking over the town of Redwood, he demands money from the residents, leaving Nat to lead his gang in to take Rufus out and release the people of the town.

Thoughts on The Harder They Fall

Characters & Performances – Nat Love grew up to become an outlaw after seeing his parents murder, he has his own gang which are known to do the right thing, which will see him making the decisions to let people live, he does want to bring down Rufus Buck for an incident in their past and he will not stop until he does. Jonathan Majors is great in this leading role, being the calm leader who never loses his cool. Rufus Buck is the leader of a rival gang who go through towns taking money from everyone, he has wronged Nat in the past and now he will use his new found freedom, he is looing to continue his reign of terror. Idris Elba is becoming one of the best villains in cinema with how his approaches roles, this is no different, where he will standout with the way his conducts his character in every scene, always looking to dominate the screen. We do have ana amazing supporting set of characters too, with Trudy Smith being the righthand person to Rufus, never letting anyone take advantage of her, will not having the patient others might have. Cherokee Bill talks about not wanting violence, but has the reputation for being the fastest hand in the land, which will bring cocky Jim Beckworth showing his respect, but also wanting to challenge for that title from Nat’s gang. Stagecoach Mary is the woman that Nat will do anything for, she will help with the gang and their plans. The supporting cast all shine, with RJ Cyler making us want to see more from his loud moth figure of Jim, while LaKeith Stanfield makes us want to see more from this character. This is why this supporting shines, we could easily see more from any of them in this film.

StoryThe story here follows two rival outlaw gangs that clash over their past and money, like most gangs in the western era, which will see the one who plays fairer needing to find a solution to repay the more dangerous one before it is too late. While the core of this story is every western, we know, it is the style this one uses, that will make it stand out, using the story to develop the characters to make us enjoy seeing the world unfold. The story will give us chances to see the revenge driven story, a pride one and the typical greed one.

ThemesThe Harder They Fall is an action western driven by revenge, that will see two outlaw gangs clash in a final showdown, which will be where we get the biggest action sequence, along the way we get the sequences that will show the strengths and weaknesses each character might have before this happens. The sets look brilliant, but too polished to feel like we are in any way a living western world.

Final Thoughts The Harder They Fall is an excellent western that world builds wonderfully to unleash an unpredictable final showdown.

ABC Film Challenge – Adventure – E – Euphoria (2017) Movie Review

Director: Lisa Langseth

Writer: Lisa Langseth (Screenplay)

Starring: Alicia Vikander, Eva Green, Charles Dance, Charlotte Rampling, Mark Stanley, Adrian Lester

Plot: Sisters in conflict travelling through Europe toward a mystery destination.

Tagline – It’s never too late.

Runtime: 1 Hour 44 Minutes

There may be spoilers in the rest of the review

Verdict: Strong Drama

Story: Euphoria starts when two sisters, Ines (Vikander) and Emilie (Green) reunite after years away from each other, Emilie wants Ines to go on a journey with her, one that takes them across Europe, which is where her secret for reason to travel is happening.

The sisters arrive at a specialist facility, run by Marina (Rampling), which has a surprise for Ines, as she learns that Emilie has been planning her own assisted suicide, wanting her sister by her side through the process.

Thoughts on Euphoria

Characters – Emilie is the sister that wants Ines to join her on a journey, once they arrive, we learn that she is dying and has chosen to end her life at this retreat, hoping to end her life on good terms with her sister. Ines is an artist that has been known around the world, she joins her sister and is left in shock with the news, not wanting her to follow through, needing to have a crash course on her mentality. Mr Daren is another patient at the retreat, he shows Ines what the time means to somebody, a final moment before needing to end the suffering, even if it shows his wealth being the reason, he can do this. Marina runs the retreat, she has always been calm and understands the sudden change in emotions from guest during this difficult time.

PerformancesAlice Vikander and Eva Green are wonderful in the leading roles, they show such strength together despite the differences the characters are going through. Charles Dance does bring a different side to the film, showing how this process can be dealt with in a different way, with Charlotte Rampling bringing the calm required through the film.

StoryThe story here follows two sisters that go on a journey, only for one to surprise the other with the destination, a retreat for assisted suicide and the two must use their remaining time to, to catch up and remember the moments in their life. This story could easily get into the talking points of whether this is a correct decision, both ethical and moral, though it doesn’t waste time on that, rather than focusing on the two sisters needing to come to terms with each other’s decision. It shows that family will always be around for you no matter what.

Adventure/MysteryThe adventure seems to follow just how the two head to an unknown location, though it does seem to be more about personal moment, with the mystery coming out early.

SettingsThe film does use the retreat the main location, this does show us how the location was important for the film to unfold. It shows us that the rich could afford this luxury.

Scene of the Movie – The first meeting shock.

That Moment That Annoyed Me – We don’t dive into the moral decision enough.

Final Thoughts This is an emotional drama that does get to tackle the true facts about how difficult life can be with an illness that will make you suffer and how two sisters deal with this time.

Overall: Emotional Drama.
