What Was Cloverfield Really About?

What Was Cloverfield Really About?

This discussion will contain spoilers and is done purely for fun, I do really like Cloverfield and don’t mean to offend anyone who was involved in the making of the movie.

Secret government document, hitting this has all happened and now we are going to be watching research about what happened for many films to come.

This is Found Footage and it rains in New York, see it is always sunny or snowy.

Creepy boyfriend films girlfriend naked in bed, well this isn’t going to end well.

Why are the government watching the part about preparing for the party?

One of the friends is leaving for Japan, so this is a leaving party that has a giant monster, which we would usually see in Japanese cinema with Godzilla and we know how bad it went when Godzilla came to New York.

Awkward conversation from TJ Miller, well this is awkward in real life now, or has this blown over now?

Surprise party guest is more worried about his ex-girlfriend being there over the people who turned up.

All the secrets come out after midnight.

Motivational speech about leaving the girl behind and enjoying life.

Ooooo Earthquake, cue the screaming.

The head of the Statue of Liberty being thrown across New York City, it was almost like the director was pleading to get a chance at a Planet of the Apes movie.

This is also an amazingly cool shot.

We get to see part of the giant monster, the less is more technique in effect.

Let’s regroup and figure out what to do, get out of town, a smart decision in a movie, what is going on?

Bridge is out, he is dead, well this escalated quickly.

We film running in found footage, this is why people hate these movies.

New idea, get across town to save old girlfriend, well I guess the smart one died.

The big creature has little creatures, this makes for good horror and cheaper effects moments.

Wrong turn, as the friends up in the middle of the battle between the military and the monster.

Subway seems like a good place to hide, wait it is dark down here.

The ocean is big, elsewhere the sun is hot.

SPIDERS or spider like creatures that scare rats.

How about we run?

Nasty cut, do you think it will get infected?

Three bad options each leading to certain death.

Military set up in a shop, guess they were shopping between fights.

Turns out getting bitten isn’t the best thing that can happen to you.

New York City is going to get blown up as the last resort

We have a countdown for evacuation, put the stopwatch on the screen please.

TJ Miller pretty much asks the questions the internet has been asking about this movie, in the movie without knowing the answers, Fourth Wall Break before he was in Deadpool.

Let’s do this dangerous climb from one building to a fallen down one, because we ran out of money for the monster effects?

We gave up a brother and a friend to maybe save a girl you were abandoning and she is near death, was it worth it?

The great escape is on now, get to the Choppa!

We see the creature monster and it is one ugly mother fucka!

Praying for life while still holding the camera in a helicopter crash.

Time for your close up.

This really small bridge if going to be the safest place we can find to record our goodbye messages.

I had a good day’ as the final line, this tells the audience how they should feel, slightly in there faces.

Plot: A lonely bachelor farmer befriends a prostitute and has to contend with her true intentions.

Verdict: The Florida Project’s Little Brother

Story: Of Minor Prophets starts as we enter the small dusty town bachelor farmer Doug (Kling) lives an isolated life away from any personal connection. Ami (Vander Broek) is a prostitute that works the outskirts of the businesses looking for clients, so she can keep a roof over her young son Josh’s (McKinney) head.

When the two meet they strike up a friendship as they both show the problems they have in their lives, they start to bond as Ami sees a way out of her life of fear.

Thoughts on Of Minor Prophets

Characters – Doug is a lonely farmer, he lives in isolation, getting his job done before returning home, never searching for a wife, even though he is a bachelor for the single women in town. He does try to do the right for Ami, someone he would never changes this. Ami is a prostitute that owes the wrong people money, she has a young son to care for as she looks for a quick way out of this world, Doug gives her hope of a different world.

PerformancesKristopher Kling as the farmer is great in this role, he helps his character feel withdrawn from most of the conversation which helps show us the isolation he has been living with comfortably. Cora Vander Broek is the other leading star of the movie, she brings us a strong character that shows the determination needed to keep her child safe, while trying to get out of the life. The rest of the cast are good through the film.

StoryThe story here will easily get comparisons to The Florida Project, he shows us the struggles of people in America, the setting is different as we have a small farmer town where we follow the mother turn prostitute that wants out of this life, while a new guardian angel figure watches over them. This story is one that will make you think of the struggles, see the positions people might put themselves in and how difficult it could be to escape.

Crime/RomanceThe life of crime is where Ami finds herself in to keep her child safe, while the romance comes from the idea the mysterious stranger could offer her a chance out of this life.

SettingsThe dusty small town setting adds plenty to this film, we see how empty the life of Doug is alone away from the main part of town, we see how the community is there supporting the select groups and how easily crime can trap people.

Scene of the Movie –
Don’t need your help!

That Moment That Annoyed Me Hard to find one.

Final ThoughtsThis is a look at the bleaker side of life in America, it will be easily compared to The Florida Project and that will prepare you for what you are going to be seeing.

Overall: Bleak and delightful drama.

There may be spoilers the rest of the review

Verdict: Heartbreakingly Brilliant Drama

Story: The Zookeeper’s Wife starts in 1939 Warsaw, Poland as we meet Antonina (Chastain) and Jan (Heldenbergh) Zabinski the zoo keepers of the Warsaw zoo, both committed to giving their animals a good life and their customers an experience they could never imagine.

When the invasion in hits Warsaw, the zoo is hit hard with the animals running wild many are killed, German zoologist Lutz Heck (Bruhl) does offer to protect the remaining quality animals by moving them to a German zoo, but the rest end up getting killed.

When Lutz agrees to let the non-Jewish couple keep their zoo open as a pig farm, they start doing what they can to help as many Jews escape the ghetto they are being forced to survive in. How many people can they save, how long can they keep everything up before getting caught out by the German’s that is the questions we are left with.

Thoughts on The Zookeeper’s Wife

Characters/PerformanceAntonina is the animal lover, people lover that works with her husband to help protect as many Jews during the war as possible, she uses her status to help keep the remaining animals safe and people safe too. Jan is the husband of Antonina that takes the biggest risks by going into the ghetto housing the Jews but he becomes increasingly jealous of Antonina and Lutz working relationship. Lutz Heck is the German zoologist that uses the Warsaw zoo for his own desire to continue breeding animals and his attraction to Antonina keeps him returning.

Performance wise, Jessica Chastain is fantastic in the leading role show us once again we how she can become any part put on front of her. Daniel Bruhl does give us a great role in which we absolutely hate his character through the film even though he isn’t truly evil. Johan Heldenbergh is also great through the film standing tall next to the two bigger names of the acting world.

StoryWe have heard this horrific story before, we know what the Nazi’s did to the Jews and we know Schindler’s List is the most famous and well-respected film version of these events. While the plot giving is slightly miss-leading because we are expecting to see more about the animal saving, we do find ourselves looking at the incredible story of how the zookeeper’s risk their lives to save as many as Jews as possible during the war. We know how amazing the heroes of the war were and learning new stories of their heroics is always good to see. I do feel this film does have certain pacing issues because you can have your heart broken in the open 30 minutes as you would be looking to see something slightly different in the next chapters of the story.

Biography/History/WarSeeing the story of the Zabinska’s struggle during the war shows us how brave they were trying to save, the difficult decision they made and the part of history they were part of.

SettingsThe settings all look fantastic putting us in the middle of the war in Warsaw showing us just how difficult everything was for the people involved.

Final ThoughtsThis is one of the most heart-breaking films you will see this year, but it does fall into another incredible story of how people risked their own lives to save Jews from the Nazis. I would say parts of the synopsis are miss-leading as I was expecting a lot more about how the animals were being saved but saying this we can seeing another incredible story from World War II.

Overall: Brilliant story of heroic actions.
