Verdict: Slasher Fans Dream

Story: 4/20 Massacre starts as we follow our five friends Jess (Bernadette), Aubrey (Parker), Donna (Danger), Rachel (Wachsberger) and Michelle (Pistone) as they head off for a camping trip for Jess’ birthday on the holiday known as 4/20 (the motivation for this holiday will be revealed in the film, don’t worry I was completely lost on it too to start with).

As the weekend unfolds the girls have a drink, drug induced time in the woods nearly a local illegal marijuana operation, which brings them face to with a killer protecting their investment.

Thoughts on 4/20 Massacre

Characters – When we get into the characters it would be fair to say each one fits into a horror type for the slasher genre. Jess is the cleaner living of the group, the only one that won’t touch drugs and looks after the rest of the group, while celebrating her own birthday. Aubrey fits in the role of the one that is good at heart that has her own feeling for our lead and wants to use this weekend to show their feelings. Donna the stoner of the group spending more time high stating moments of the obvious, like Marty from Cabin in the Woods. Rachel is the womaniser of the group with her latest project along on the trip with Michelle being that project is the newest member of the group just trying not to say anything she shouldn’t around the friends.

PerformancesJamie Bernadette in a leading role again, this up and coming actress is a very busy lady of late with Killing Joan only just appeared on VOD. In this role she once again shows she can handle combat skills and strength to be the lead role, fingers crossed we will see her many more horror films. Diving into the rest of the cast we have good performances from all with Stacey Danger becoming the character you want to see more off.

StoryThe story isn’t the most difficult for anyone to follow, it follows five friends that are going for a camping trip only to find themselves needing to survive against a ruthless killer. There is on part of the story that sticks out, none of the film is set at night which is something that breaks the generic idea of slasher films. You don’t need anything too deep here, it does everything the story needs to do.

Action/HorrorThe action in the film plays hand in hand with the horror as we see the killer calculate his next kills in full action form, the horror is plenty of blood and gore with the kills, that do feel original even if the moments don’t feel like they have the tension being built in them.

SettingsThe film is set in the woods during the day, which breaks the mould for slasher movies which generally take place in the darkness.

Special EffectsThe effects used when it comes to thee kills are good throughout when it comes to the kills which feel unique in their own way.

Scene of the Movie –
Smoking alone.

That Moment That Annoyed Me Too many disposable characters.

Final ThoughtsThis movie plays into the slasher movies of old, it hits the marks on every level making us enjoy the film, it has great kills and a strong lead.

Overall: Enjoyable slasher movie.

ABC Film Challenge – Random – M – Mojave (2015)

Director: William Monahan

Writer: William Monahan (Screenplay)

Starring: Oscar Isaac, Garrett Hedlund, Louise Bourgin, Mark Wahlberg, Walter Goggins

Plot: A suicidal artist goes into the desert, where he finds his doppelgänger, a homicidal drifter.

There may be spoilers the rest of the review

Verdict: Thriller with Potential

Story: Mojave starts as Tom (Hedlund) a suicidal artist who works in film goes off the radar into the Mojave Desert, but when he meets drifter Jack (Isaac) and the two clash leading to Jack tracking down Tom once he goes back to his life in the film world.

With Tom adjusting back to his normal life he must deal with everything he didn’t want to in the first place. Jack however shows his true colours as a ruthless serial killer that tracks down Tom to get the revenge for the fire camp incident in the desert.

Thoughts on Mojave

Characters/PerformanceTom is an artist working in Hollywood, we never seem to learn just what his job is but we do know he isn’t enjoying life right now. Jack is a drifter that hunts in the desert but after clashing with Tom he sees a chance for a new hunting ground, LA who calls everyone ‘Brother’

Performance wise, Oscar Isaac is good in this role keeping up his ability to play someone slightly strange, Garrett Hedlund does ok but you don’t seem to buy into his broken rich man character.

StoryThe story has moments that you could see borrow from Insomnia and The Hitcher, I say this because we have an innocent man that accidently kills someone and must work with the true criminal to move on but ultimately this is a cat and mouse chase between the two.

ThrillerThis is a thriller that does pull us in even though it does take its time getting going, there are some wonderfully crafted scene that are filled with tension though.

SettingsThe desert does make for a good starting setting which shows how they can clash there, with LA making for a good setting for later in the film.

Final ThoughtsThis is a thriller that surprised but does take time getting going and is mixed with really good scenes and bland scenes.

Overall: Slow burning thriller.

MY FRIEND DAHMER coming to Blu-ray and DVD on April 10th

MY FRIEND DAHMER coming to Blu-ray and DVD on April 10th

Based on the acclaimed graphic novel about one of the
most notorious serial killers of our time
“This film is sensitively wrought. It’s credible in its evocation of mid-’70s suburbia. The acting is excellent throughout, and Ross Lynch in the role of Dahmer elicits genuine sympathy for an increasingly lost but not yet monstrous soul.”
– Glenn Kenny, New York Times

My Friend Dahmer is based on the acclaimed graphic novel about one of the most notorious serial killers ever. Its screenplay landed a spot on the coveted ‘Black List’, ranking it as one of the best un-produced screenplays (at the time) before becoming a hit movie.

My Friend Dahmer had a theatrical release in 2017 and has grossed over $1,300,000. It played extensively on the festival circuit, premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival and going on to play at LA Film Festival, Deauville Film Festival, American Film Festival, and many others. The film features an all-star cast that includes Emmy Nominee Anne Heche (Donnie Brasco), SAG Award winner Vincent Kartheiser (Mad Men), Former Disney star Ross Lynch (Austin & Ally), Alex Wolff (Patriot’s Day) and Dallas Roberts (3:10 To Yuma).
Jeffrey Dahmer murdered 17 men and boys in the Midwest United States between 1978 and 1991 before being captured and incarcerated. He would become one of America’s most infamous serial killers. This is the story before that story.
Jeff Dahmer (Lynch) is an awkward teenager struggling to make it through high school with a family life in ruins. He collects roadkill, fixates on a neighborhood jogger (Kartheiser), and copes with his unstable mother (Heche) and well intentioned father (Roberts). He begins to act out at school, and his goofball antics win over a group of band-nerds who form The Dahmer Fan Club, headed by Derf Backderf (Wolff). But this camaraderie can’t mask his growing depravity. Approaching graduation, Jeff spirals further out of control, inching ever closer to madness.
