Top 5 Favourite Sam Rockwell Roles

Sam Rockwell is an actor that the fans love, he has been in some of the most popular films of all time but somehow doesn’t get the praise in the award ceremonies. I have to admit I haven’t seen a lot of his film so I will pick a top 5 from what I have seen.

5. Frank Mercer – Matchstick Men (2003)matchstick

Frank is the partner to Roy who work as con men, he talks Roy into one more job before he retires, Nicolas Cage gets a lot of praise for his work in this film but Rockwell is right up there with him.

4. Guy Fleegman – Galaxy Quest (1999)galaxy

In this space comedy Rockwell plays one of the members of a cult television show that an alien race love to watch. Showing off comedy levels this time.

3. Wild Bill Wharton – The Green Mile (1999)will bill

In what is only a small role but a crucial one we learn who was responsible for the crime John Coffey is meant to have commited.

2. Zaphod Beeblebrox – The Hitchhiker’ Guide to the Galaxy (2005)hitch

This might be the strangest addition to the list but I just love the character in the remake of the cult favourite British television show and Sam nails every single scene with his arrogant style and charisma.

1.       Sam Bell – Moon (2009)moon

How could this not be number one really, many people believe this was an Oscar worthy performance of a man on a solo space mission when something strange happens. Sam pretty much does his whole film solo which many actors would struggle with.

  1. This is s great list. I might swap out Hitchhiker’s with Charlie’s Angels and Iron Man 2, but that’s only because I was disappointed with the movie and not Rockwell being in it.

  2. Great article. I loved Rockwell in Moon. Probably his best. Although I really enjoyed his wacky and layered performance in the George Clooney directed CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND. Thanks for reminding me about Matchstick Men. I need to see that again.

  3. I love love love Sam Rockwell. I can always picture him dancing in Iron Man 2. I too am surprised CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND did not make the list. I agree that Moon is his best performance. Simply Phenomenal.
