Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines (2012)

logoDirector: Declan O’Brien

Writer: Declan O’Brien (Screenplay) Alan B McElroy (Characters)

Starring: Doug Bradley, Camilla Arfwedson, Simon Ginty, Roxanne McKee, Paul Luebke, Oliver Hoare, Kyle Redmond Jones, Amy Lennox, Duncan Wisbey

Plot: A group of college students, on a trip for Mountain man Festival on Halloween in West Virginia, encounter a group cannibals, who want to save their cousin from jail.

Verdict: Same Level as 4 which is still poor

Story: We start by following our group of sexed up, drugged up and alcohol fuelled college students as they are preparing for Mountain Man Festival, a big festival set in and around the mountains of West Virginia. While being reckless the friends run into a mysterious man, wrecking their car and leading to them all getting arrested. Now the cannibals want to crash the festival and free there family member from jail, but along the way the leave a body count.

Trying to show that the cannibals have a mentor who bought them into the Virginia area is a plus, but to be honest that is the only highlight. The film has gone into the flat out torture porn mode with the cannibals playing games with their victims by trying to find the most outrageous ways to kill them. The characters seem to make decisions that are beyond terrible including the Sheriff saying stay together and the very next comment she goes outside on her own. This is just poor storytelling, how will the cannibals eat the victims if they destroy them so much? In the end this continues the trend of the films declining as they continue to lose what made them interesting. (3/10)

Actor Review

Doug Bradley: Maynard looking after the cannibals now, he is family to them but he normal look helps him blend into the crowd, he is trying to teach them how to cope with their change in environment. He gets locked up and promises everyone will die if he isn’t released. Doug makes a good villain to add to series and is menacing throughout. (7/10)

Camilla Arfwedson: Sheriff Angela only Sheriff in the local town who isn’t looking forward to the festival because it leaves them dealing with all the drunks. She never manages to follow her instructions making her a terrible leader. Camilla never convinces as a cop and her character is horribly written. (3/10)

Simon Ginty: Billy driver of the car that wrecks because he is too busy being reckless with his friends, though he does take complete responsibility for the drugs. Simon gives an inconstant performance as the stupid college kid. (3/10)

Support Cast: The cannibals are the same as always solid enough, but the supporting friends all make poor choices and become disposable.

Director Review: Declan O’Brien – Thankfully this was his last outing on this film so hopefully now we can give it back to someone who can save it. (3/10)

Horror: Torture porn now, what happened? (3/10)

Settings: They couldn’t even create the isolation idea, that bit is easy. (3/10)
Special Effects
: Solid effects with some of the kills but wrong genre really. (7/10)

Suggestion: No, just no. (Leave it in the Box Set)

Best Part: Doug Bradley is actually an interesting addition to the series.

Worst Part: Becoming torture porn.

Halloween (1978)

logoDirector: John Carpenter

Writer: John Carpenter, Debra Hill (Screenplay)

Starring: Donald Pleasence, Jamie Lee Curtis, Nancy Kyes, P.J. Soles, Charles Cyphers, Kyle Richards, Brian Andrews, John Michael Graham

Plot: The year is 1963, the night: Halloween. Police are called to 43 Lampkin Ln. only to discover that 15 year old Judith Myers has been stabbed to death, by her 6 year-old brother, Michael. After being institutionalized for 15 years, Myers breaks out on the night before Halloween. No one knows, nor wants to find out, what will happen on October 31st 1978 besides Myers’ psychiatrist, Dr. Loomis. He knows Michael is coming back to Haddonfield, but by the time the town realizes it, it’ll be too late for many people.

Verdict: Suspense Classic

Story: How often do we watch horror films that over complicate the story? Too often right. With the first Halloween everything got taken back to the simplest level. In a nut shell it is as simple as escaped killer returns home to terrorise local teenagers. The only back story we learn is that he did the first crime at a young age, we don’t learn any of the future history created between the characters, just that he likes to kill. The film focuses on all the dummy scares and the feeling you are being watched. All these factors make this one of the best horror films of all time. (9/10)

Actor Review

Donald Pleasence: Dr Loomis Michael’s doctor who has been trying to treat him for years without getting very far. Upon his escape Loomis spends the film trying to get to the town and then convincing the Sheriff that Michael is coming back. Good performance but doesn’t have much interaction scenes with Michael, well one. (9/10)

Jamie Lee Curtis: Laurie the good innocent teenager who spends most of her time studying and babysitting while all her friends are involved with other activities. She is the one Michael spends most of the time stalking, even though she thinks it is just a Halloween prank she stays alert in case it is more. Good performance playing the role well and creating a memorable horror icon. (9/10)

Nancy Kyes: Annie Brackett one of the closest friends of Laurie, she is much more open than Laurie and while babysitting she ends up pushing her child that she is looking after onto Laurie so she can go fool around with her boyfriend. Good supporting performance with complete opposite to Laurie. (8/10)

Director Review: John Carpenter – I have seen nearly all of Carpenter’s work and this is right up there with his best, he really knows how to create suspense and tension in a film. (9/10)

Horror: With everything being building up to the final pursuit we are put on the edge of our seats early on, but don’t expect any true scares just be prepared to be left wondering who is watching you. (9/10)

Settings: The settings will be remembered as being invaded by a killer in a home where things are meant to be secure works for the genre. (9/10)

Suggestion: This is an all-time classic in the horror genre that should have been watched by any horror fans out there. (Horror Fans Watch)

Best Part: Tension built up throughout.

Worst Part: I feel today’s new audience may not enjoy the slow build.

Action Scene Of The Film: The final pursuit.

Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginning (2011)

logoDirector: Declan O’Brien

Writer: Declan O’Brien (Screenplay) Alan B McElroy (Characters)

Starring: Jennifer Pudavick, Tenika Davis, Kaitlyn Leeb, Terra Vnesa, Ali Tataryn, Samantha Kendrick, Victor Zinck Jr, Sean Skene, Dean Armstrong

Plot: A group of college students gets lost in a storm during their snowmobiling trip, and takes shelter in an abandoned sanatorium, which is the home of deformed cannibals.

Verdict: Just Bad

Story: We start by seeing a tour of the mental hospital where we find our cannibals locked up only for them to escape and leaving the hospital in the hands of the other mental patients. This completes the origin story for our cannibals a less than 10 minute introduction in a film that is called ‘Bloody Beginning’. Next up we meet the group of college students who are off for a weekend snowboarding but after they get lost looking for their location they take up shelter in the now abandoned mental home. Overnight the group gets attacked and haunted by the group of now grown up cannibals. We have to see who will make it out alive.

With what should be a longer origin story it really is just a glorified escape plan. The group of college students are hugely unlikable and put in way too much fake screaming and crying. This story will having screaming at the screen ‘STOP BEING FUCKING IDOITS’ because they make so many mistakes and constantly contradict what they just said about doing. They even have a chance to kill the cannibals and don’t use it, ‘hello these mad man have just butchered and eaten your friends but you want them to lock them up and let the police who you can’t get hold off sort them out’. This story has so many things wrong with it, it is unbelievable. (2/10)

Actor Review

Jennifer Pudavick: Kenia I believe she is meant to be the smart one of the group, who gets easily scared and doesn’t want to deal with the pranks of the others. She keeps coming up with plans but never follows through with any of them and nearly every one she plans ends up with somebody dying. Jennifer gives a terrible lead performance with fake screaming and crying throughout. (3/10)

Tenika Davis: Sara part of the group and along with her girlfriend is on the trip to have a good time. Seems to be the one willing to fight most of all the group, she also stays loyal to her friends. Tenika gives a poor performance never convinces and seems to be forced into two unnecessary lesbian love scenes. (3/10)

Kaitlyn Leeb: Bridget girlfriend of Sara who is on the trip for a good time. In a weird way she is the only one who makes sense and just wants to leave, but no one will listen to her, she does show a lack of loyalty to her friends. Kailyn gives a poor performance as she never looks like she is in the right film. (3/10)

Support Cast: Filled with other friends who all make disposable characters and the cannibals who make for good hunters you actually cheer for by the end.

Director Review: Declan O’Brien – Taking the franchise the wrong way here, he is making the films worse and ruining what was starting to get good. (3/10)

Horror: Loses a lot of horror aspects but still has plenty of blood and gore. (5/10)

Thriller: Doesn’t pull you in as much as it should do. (2/10)

Settings: Isolation side of the story is created and moving the location to a mental facility over the mountain ranges. (10/10)
Special Effects
: Mix of effects throughout starting strong but then falling into sloppy CGI. (3/10)

Suggestion: I think even if you are a fan of the franchise you will struggle to enjoy this one. (Avoid)
