The Illusionist (2006)

Director: Neil Burger
Writer: Neil Burger
Starring: Edward Norton, Jessica Biel, Paul Giamatti, Rufus Sewell, Eddie Marsan

Story The story follows an illusionist Eisenheim (Edward Norton) who turns up in Vienna at starts wowing crowds with his new unseen before illusions. Inspector Uhl (Paul Giamatti) sees the first show and starts to get curious to how the illusions are performed. Also curious about the show is Crown Prince Leopold (Rufus Sewell) who takes his wife to be Sophie (Jessica Biel). Sophie is also the long lost love of Eisenheim.

We find ourselves watching as Eisenheim and Sophie rekindle their love from under the nose of Leopold, Inspector uhl is sent to try and investigate Eisenhheim and the draggy that strikes.

Verdict This movie came out the soon after that The Prestige was released giving it the idea of magician thriller some creditability. Edward Norton gives on his solid as always performances as does Paul Giamatti. The story might start slow but what unfolds is one of the best twist movies you will see. Also being told as an almost fairytale with narration from Inspector Uhl like he is telling the story to his children in the future. Some of the illusions are pretty special with some of the characters being used from real life history. I would give this a must watch for all into a mystery thriller this one will keep you guessing through out the cat and mouse games.

Best quote Eisenheim ‘My intention has only been to entertain, nothing more

Favourite character Eisenheim as the charismatic illusionist

Stand out performance Edward Norton usually always ends up being the best performer in movies

Best moment How the tricks were done reveal all are great

Worst Moment Slightly slow but i think it adds to the story being told in the time it is being told, much better on second viewing because you know what to look out for

my Rating 86%

Story David Norris (Matt Damon) is running for congress when a story gets released cause his ratings to slide. David goes on to win and thanks to a chance meeting with Elise (Emily Blunt) gives one of the best speeches people have heard boosting his chances of running for senate.

The next morning Harry misses the chance he has to stop David getting on a bus to work, on this bus he meet Elise again cause his destiny to be changed. After getting her phone number he arrives at work only to discover that Charlie (Michael Kelly) his campaign manager and his office had been frozen by Richardson (John Slattery) and his team for adjustments. After seeing behind the curtain Richardson burns the number putting David back on his path, warning David not to find Elise and not tell anyone about the people making peoples lives happen.

David is left trying to keep his destine line while always trying to find Elise can he beat the adjustment team watch and you will see.

Verdict The headline review was ‘Bourne meets Inception’ and in a way it is having a way of controlling someones life by make chances things happen. the action chases are well constructed without even having to use guns. David love for Elise is strong with all the obstacles and sacrifices he makes for the idea of a better futures. This is a strong action thriller that everyone should enjoy but you would have to watch from start to finish and will struggle if picked up half way through.

Best quote Elise ‘ I’m not some hopeless romantic, I would never allow myself to be that way, but once I’ve fell, even for a moment, what I felt with you’

Favourite character Harry David personal watcher who explains the rules and breaks some too

Stand out performance Matt Damon he gives his normal strong performance as an important figure who takes risks

Best moment The door chase

Worst Moment Maybe being picky but maybe more explanation of the year gaps

My rating 88%

That’s What I Am (2011)

Story This is a coming of age tale set in the 60s of Andy Nichol (Chase Ellison). Andy is 13years old average kid at school avoided by the bullies and on talking terms with the geeks. In the class with his favourite teacher Mr Simon (Ed Harris) Andy is teamed up with the kid who takes the most bully but just ignores it all Big G better known as Stanley (Alexander Walters).

Andy must learn to stand up for himself when he starts to slip down the so called popularity chart working wit Stanley. Andy also has the hots for Mary Clear (Mia Rose Frampton) can he overcome his shyness to get the girl and become the new it guy at school. Mr Simon being the best teacher around can’t stand the bully these kids do. One of the bullies starts a rumour leading the the Principal (Amy Madigan) in a hard place, Can Mr Simon reputation as a teacher save him? Can Andy learn his life lesson?

Verdict This is a brilliant coming of age tale using the idea that you should always treat everyone the same no matter if they are different to you. The range of characters comes over well even if they are slightly cliched. This would come over very well for all American viewers but over here in England the story may not come over as well. Ed Harris gives an amazing performance as the inspiring teacher, While Alexander Walters in his debut film does an excellent job as Big G. Coming of age fans this is a must watch but it our technology driven world the school times are very different now.

Best quote Mr Simon ‘ Human Dignity + Compassion = Peace’

Favourite character Big G/ Stanley conducts himself so well like nothing will effect him what every people say or think of him.

Stand out performance Ed Harris brilliant teaching the life lesson to all the characters however old or young they are

Best moment Big G talent contest moment

Worst Moment The Parents reactions to the Mr Simon rumour
